In time for the 10th anniversary and the fifth game, let's corral all the EO stuff in a general thread.
Speaking of which, best class comes to EO5. Please dedicate all heals to them. |

They're called Dragoons, but in practice they're more like gun Paladins.

I really wish they'd announce a release date already, besides "Fall, eh." I want to know when to fit it in.

I own every EO game that's been released stateside, but I've only beaten one of them.
I finished Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl on 3DS. I did the story mode so that I would get the extra stratum it provided. I had no idea what I was doing, and I played through the whole thing on Expert mode, which took me 115 hours to finish the whole game. It might have helped if I'd used a strategy guide or walkthrough, but I refused to accept any artificial aid. Overall the experience was harrowing, especially the white knuckled FOE/boss fights, but I'd much rather the game had lasted 35 hours not 115 hours. I felt kind of silly seeing people post 30-40 hour completion times via Standard (Easy mode btw) and 25 hour completion times via Picnic (Babby mode legit). Still, I did feel a sense of elitist-jerk pride having beaten the whole thing on Expert with no help (also a healthy dose of self loathing for wasting so much time on it). As such I've been conflicted on whether I want to play Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight on Expert mode or Standard. I think it lets you switch the difficulty at any time, so I might explore the stratums on Standard to save time, and fight the FOEs/bosses on Expert so I can still have my soul properly crushed. |

Wait... someone finally made a dragoon that uses a gun?

I love this series, although at the time I wasn't a fan of the first or second. Just too inhospitable and, frankly, busted.
That said, EO3 has a delightfully crazy class system, EO4 is as polished as I've seen one of these games, and I was mostly pleasantly surprised by the Story mode in Untold 1 and 2. Unofficial EO series rankings: EO4 EO3 EO:U2 EO:U1 Persona Q EO1 EO2 |

This is literally exactly what a Dragoon is. Heavy infantry with firearms.

Well, I had no idea what a real deal one is since my brain is stuffed full of "jumpy guy with lance" up to this point.

Oh man. Oh man. Folks in armour launching themselves into their air with gunfire, and then landing with bayonets pointed down. That sounds so rad. Why is this not already a thing?

Was this known? Popped up on my feed. As with tradition, first print EO5 comes with bonus stuff

I remember when you told me about that, Exhuminator. I'm pretty sure I haven't beaten any RPGs quite that difficult. I'd go for standard mode next time for sure.

Kickass. A lot of people seemed to have problems with PQ, but I really liked it, and I could stand to spend some more time with the P5 cast.
Hopefully they revamp the way the skill system works, though. I'd much prefer the reverse of PQ1, where most of the skills were on sub-Personas and the base character was essentially just a pile of stats. |

They're milking the cow dry and I will keep giving it to them.
Too bad EO3r (with guest class half naked dancer girl) won't be seeing light of day (if at all). |

Yes please!
My problems were combat was trivial if you used Naoto's instant death skills, so I spent most of the time stuck on the puzzle portion of the level. I upset my daughter by sometimes just fighting the bosses that gated off progress instead of figuring out the avoidance patterns. Daddy was cheating (and over-leveled)! |

There will be one final Etrian Odyssey 3DS game. Well, ok, the actual quote was more along the lines of "one more game where you can draw the map on the bottom screen" but still. End of the era my friends.

Etrian Odyssey 7 will also be on the 3DS, but it will use the touch screen for a rhythm-based battle system.
