Default Appreciating Game-Related Artwork

We have a fanart thread but, as far as I can tell, we don't have a place to discuss concept art, box/manual art, advertisements, magazine art, and so forth, and I've just stumbled across one that I badly need to share.

Look at that. LOOK AT THAT! That is an advertisement for an adorable puzzle game on the NES involving freezing enemies to turn them into pushable blocks, and is a perfect example of why 80's art was awesome. Here we have a scene with Kickle, now a realistic and exceptionally well-muscled child, floating into a window of the final boss's castle with a balloon, freezing (and neatly stacking) every enemy in the room, knocking the wind out of the boss while throwing up jazz hands, and carving his own damn name into the floor before the balloon even has time to drift out of sight.

And the expressions! We've got a grumpy slime, an angry woodland rodent, a defiant clown, and a bewildered chicken, while that bomb up there has a perfect DO NOT WANT face. Everything about the boss himself exemplifies the word "oof," and it's all capped off with a terrible cold-related pun.

This, folks, is how you sell a game.

Exile II: Wicked Phenomenon (this is the cover of the game, but the ad was the same image)

I remember poring over this ad in EGM years before I even knew what a Turbografx was... Definitely an evocative image even if it doesn't really explain much about the game itself. Hell, I don't even really like the game that much- it's just a great image.

I'm waiting for someone to post a picture of the Mega Man box art. You know it's going to happen.

I couldn't find the original image and have only this blurry JPEG thumbnail to show for it, but this might be the important piece of concept art in videogame history, simply because it finally reveals what on Earth the middle row invader is supposed to be:

My understanding is everything was designed on paper before implementing it in code. IIRC there are supposedly some differences with the final game, but I don't remember what.

i've always been bothered by metroidvania maps with huge empty spaces in the middle, especially if a lot of the rooms are long linear tracks. SM makes good use of irregular room shapes and vertical space so it gets a pass, but stuff like Momodora II and some CV games waste so much of the genre's potential

It's a lot harder to tell that the big gap exists in-game, since the maps are split by area and you don't know how Tourian is structured until the end of the game, where it no longer matters.

M.U.L.E Covers deserve to be in this thread, absurd covers for an absurd game.

I think the NES artwork is a lot more inspiring, actually. American imperialism on the far reaches of the galaxy! The computer art looks like it was created by someone who spent way too much time reading British science fiction.

From the Japanese Twin Snakes premium package. I'd love to play a game like this.

That's not how Needle Man shoots needles! He has two gun arms for that!

I had this poster on my wall as a child and that always bothered me, along with Spark and Top Man being yellow.

I think I posted this in the mind blowing thread earlier this year when I found out. You know what the MM1 box art looked like in Europe?

Yeah. God damn, that's the best of the lot.

You might be interested to know it was based on the cover image from Metal Gear 2:

Was Mega Man's pose here based on any official Japanese art? There's a drawing of him in an old Nintendo Power making the same pose.

What bothers me is that most of the robot masters have the face of "Yaranaika?" man. This probably means I've been spending too much time on the internet.
