Default Talking Time curates December: What're you anticipating? What's worth checking out?

A thread for sharing new games coming out in December...

As the year winds down so do new releases, but gather up the interesting ones we shall.

Did you discover some small game that not everyone knows about?
Share that and let us know what it is about!

Already know a thing or two that interests you?
Make a list of your interests and/or possibles!

Don't know what's so great about an upcoming game you keep hearing about?
Ask here!

Don't follow gaming news that closely and just want to passively see what BigGames™ people care about?
This is the place!

~

Going into more detail:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's one text list. Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.

  • Previous threads can be read here.

  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Default I didn't mention Smash because everybody already knows

Katamari Damacy Reroll on the Nintendo Switch on December 7 is an HD remaster of Katamari Damacy 1. If you never played Katamari Damacy before... how did you find this forum?

Just this week alone, Subnautica (a cool underwater game finally on PS4), The Last Remnant (cool Kawazu RPG) Monster Boy (spiritual successor to Wonder Boy III), and Just Cause 4 are coming out on PS4, among other things I'm not quite as interested in. Everybody could release nothing for the rest of the month and it'd still be a very good month for gaming.

Also there's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch, not that I can play it...

I wish this was on PS4 too, 'cuz Katamari Damacy is a game I've really been wanting a PS2 on PS4 release of for a while now.

Already have Smash Bros pre-loaded on my Switch. All that's left is to wait till Friday. Honestly, that will probably be all I need for December.

Smash Bros for sure! I feel like a lot more games than usual had December release dates for a while but got pushed to next year.

In terms of planned purchases, Smash Ultimate is my most anticipated game for some time now, so I am super excited about it.

I am 100% in for a Katamari remaster, I just have to decide what system I want it on. If the PC version supports higher resolutions, I might get it there for eventual 4K Katamari when I buy a new TV. Or would it just be 4Katamari?

Very few games get a second chance, let alone a third. the rerelease is notable and shows there's still interest in the niche which could have disappeared long ago, regardless of when the game originally came out. I thought that the intent of my statement was clear.

Is there any word on what has been "remastered" from the last PC release? I wouldn't mind playing it again.

Smash, The Last Remnant, Katamari....all these things are fine and good.

But none of them are MUTANT. LEAGUE. ZERO.

I go to pick up my Persona: Eternal Collection today. Because I'm a sucker for a good deal and three games for a $100 isn't too shabby.

For any of ya'll too lazy to click a thing, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden looks to be a real GOAT that's going to fly under a lot of radars. It's an XCOM-inspired game based on a pen-and-paper setting where you play mutant animals in a post-apocalyptic, STALKER-inspired game world, and early buzz seems very positive.

Oh, that's very different from the game I was picturing (which turns out to be Mutant Football League and is in fact already out). Much more intriguing.

Oh, that is not what I expected. I won't have any time to play it in the near future, but I might pick it up next year sometime if I keep hearing positive things.

Hopefully this is the last month that we get to talk about Sega Ages Phantasy Star here.

GRIS sure looks pretty. Will it also be a good game? Who knows!

Oh God So Many;

Smash Brothers
Battle Princess Madelyn
Last Remnant
Sega Genesis Collection ($40 worth of double-dipping is a pittance for Portable Phantasy Star 2-4 and three Shining games)
Phantasy Star 1 (the M2 Remaster with heaps of QoL improvements)
Sundered (Dead Cells, except even fancied looking and with a sphere grid)
Black Sea Odyssey (looks like Pixeljunk Shooter, except with a Boss Fight focus)
Monsterboy in the Cursed Kingdom (Wonderboy literally in all but name)

And most of those are just this week

I went to the eShop and realized two other games are coming out this month that I'm really intrigued by. The first game, Desert Child, comes out on the 11th and... well I don't know what it is. Racing and some sort of life sim that involves eating ramen?

Then on the 13th is Gris. Which is freaking beautiful platformer? The description says it's a serene experience in a world free from danger but the trailer sure doesn't look like that!

So yeah, two games I'm really curious about but also befuddled by!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the biggest game this month on my radar. I've grown into a fair weather smash fan with past iterations, but what interests me in Ultimate is the prospect of a big, engaging single player mode. Maybe I'm a dummy, but that The World of Light trailer has given me high expectations.

I'm probably more interested though in Battle Princess Madelyn. I love the Ghosts 'n Goblins games and I've played a lot of the indie inspired / spiritual successors. Is it just me or have there been so many over the years that this is practically its own subgenre? All that is missing is a good name. "GnG-'em ups"?

Finally, count me in as curious about Monster Boy in the Cursed Kingdom (which, for those paying attention, is neither 'Wonder Boy' nor 'Monster World' ). Anyway, a wholly original game 2d action rpg adventure attached to a classic franchise is always right up my alley. I'll confess that out of the entire WB/MW franchise, the only entry that I've played all the way to completion is Monster World IV, so my enthusiasm for this new one is at more restrained levels.

Tiny Cartridge
had an article about this and it's too damn adorable:

Quote:
When Creative Director Christopher Obritsch’s daughter Madelyn wanted to be in Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, and fight “Green Head,” he said it was someone else’s game - but he could make her a new game. “But girls can’t be knights, Daddy. Only boys!” she said, to which he answered “Pshh…What color do you want your armor to be?” The answer was pink! And that’s how this game started. Chris’s daughter Madelyn loves the first stage of Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and makes him play it over and over again. Why? Because she wants to see him fight “Green head,“ the Shielder boss at the end of the first stage. It’s not hard for her to twist his rubber arm, as it’s been his favorite game since it came out - all those years ago.

This just came out and it costs like twice as much as I thought it would ($40cdn), so I guess I'm going to wait for a sale. Sounds like the PC port also forces you to play at low resolution/low detail - and maybe using keyboard controls? - until you finish the first level, which is annoying.
