I read Parish's review, and though he framed it negatively, I kinda don't feel like his gripes were really all that negative (which he admits very fairly). Honestly, a more combat-centric Metroid game seems fitting where the entire narrative is exterminate Metroids. Especially if it's not at the expense of the games exploration-based elements.

On the other hand, there isn't anyone else I'd trust to give a more honest review of a Metroid game.

But yeah. Still getting it!

Meanwhile as someone who thinks parrying attacks is one of the most satisfying mechanics in all gaming I'm really only more excited to get the game

Also I guess I bought a 3DS whoops

I hope you got the galaxy version because every time I see it I wish I didn't already own a perfectly good 3DS

I can see myself feeling exactly the same way as Parish regarding the melee counters, and anticipated those would banjax the game's pacing and flow (or, to be charitable, completely reorient them) from the first video clip. All of the complaints flagged up in that review feel somehow inexorable.

Still excited for something I'll likely have a blast with, though, and banking on the assumption that an oddly turgid and cluttered Metroid game beats no Metroid game!

Yeah, I was worried the minute the first trailer showed a counter attack and revealed that Mercury Steam was the developer, but held on to the optimistic hope that they learned from their mistakes from the past and was hoping the game added a lot more to the original than just revised combat.

And it seems my faith has been rewarded.

Now to wait three more days...

I hear the pace picks up again once you acquire more weapon options. So I guess I gotta push on through the slow parts.

Can you turn upgrades on and off, like in Super Metroid?

Honestly, not much was going to dissuade me from this. Especially since I pre-ordered and all that...

I also somehow enjoyed Mirror of Fate, so maybe I'm just weird. (And no, it's clearly not as good as the Igavania games or most Metroid games.)

Eh, I don't think it's unreasonable to enjoy Mirror of Fate. But it has two things going against it for me, I really like the old Igavanias and I never really could get into Prince of Persia. Anyone who's warm to PoP can definitely get a lot more enjoyment out of the game than I did.

Hmm, that may be it then. I loved the Prince of Persia games, and still curse the fact that Assassin's Creed basically killed them off.

Somebody uploaded the soundtrack to YouTube, and apparently some of the tracks are in the spirit of the weird atmospheric tracks from the original. For instance, here's the games take on the 'bugs' theme from ruins 3, and here's a weird thing I don't really recognize. (EDIT: Some of the other tracks in the soundtrack have spoilers in their titles. You have been warned.)

Of any of the ways this remake could have been more faithful to the original than AM2R was, this was the one I was least expecting.

(Okay, I think I'll stop spoiling the game for myself now.)

I feel much the same way. I was very happy when I found out that the Wii version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was a totally unique game vs. the 360/PS3 title, and had a blast with it. Give that one a shot if you haven't already.

I'll probably wait on this until the initial hype wears down, and maybe ask for it as a Xmas gift.

There are a bunch of big spoilers in the tracklist that shows up on the YouTube songs linked.

I mean I'm honestly kinda glad I just got the apparent presence of Ridley spoiled for me so that I won't be disappointed when I discover it in the game

I kind of feel the same way, I think. I'm not sure how they would justify it, unless they added the Ceres segment to the end of the game? Or maybe he's not in the game, and it's just used for an escalating escape sequence?

*high five*

Seriously, that game was great. I actually came across the game by accident. I snagged the Wii copy to either trade in or give away (it was $2 sealed!), and I always test things before I do that, regardless. Imagine my surprise when it was a brand new game! Imagine my further surprise that it wasn't just a new game, but probably better than the "big" version of it!

Yeah, anybody who likes Prince of Persia should play the game. It even makes sensible use of the Wii remote.

Do Metroid prices hold like Pokemon games do? I sort of decided I'd wait 6 months till this was available used

I find nearly all Nintendo games stubbornly hold their original RRP (or close to it) forever, except for when they become "rare" and soar upward, as in the case of the Prime Trilogy. Hopefully you'll get lucky with a used copy, though!

Other M wound up in the bargain bins though, but reception to this one doesn't seem to be nearly as dire.

Your best hope is that it hits Players Choice status.

Yeah, Other M is the only game I can think of that ever reduced down to $9.99 regular price. Which happened, of course, pretty soon after I paid a full $60 for it day one.

If you're lucky it will get a Player's Choice rerelease. Nintendo games outside of disastrous bombs rarely get drastic price cuts.
