Default Etrian Odyssey Nexus, Coming to the 3DS

The title hasn't been announced, but a new EO game is coming out for the 3DS, and it's not going to be an EO3 remake. Probably either EOVI or EO:Final or something like that.

It's being positioned as a culmination of and celebration for the series so far, and also the last EO game where you get to draw a map on the bottom screen of a DS.

I'm totally on board with an Etrian Odyssey FES or whatever. I hope they bring Farmers back. Heck, throw balance to the curb and bring ALL the classes back.

Via Resetera, via Persona Central:

Quote:
The game will be for the Nintendo 3DS.
The game will not be Etrian Odyssey 3 [Untold]
It will be a “true culmination” of the series.
It will have a lot of map drawing. (“So much mapping, players will dislike it.”)
It will have surprising content.

We'll just have to see about that. Mapping is what I love best about the series.

I'm excited to learn more about this project; though my first concern is that it'll be released so close to the end of the 3DS's life span that the chance of it getting localized and released outside of Japan might be pretty slim.

It already seemed kind of like we were lucky to get EO5... Though maybe that's just my uninformed impression. Atlus does have several announced US releases through the first half of next year, so I guess they still see localizing games for the 3DS as a viable business for now.

Of their recent releases... I think Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 is the only 3DS game that's been released in Japan but doesn't have a localization announcement. They also announced Persona Q2 a few months back, but there's no announced Japanese release for that as of yet.

I imagine this vaguely announced new EO game will probably release after Q2, which probably makes it even less likely to get localized. I'm always hopeful, but without the benefit of featuring characters from Persona 5 (IIRC that's what was announced for Q2) this next EO game probably has an uphill battle for release outside of Japan.

I guess E3 2018 might be when we need to start worrying? If Atlus doesn't announce any further 3DS localization by then, I imagine they might be done with the platform. Maybe it will depend on how their currently announced releases do over the next several months.

At lest with the 3DS Atlus *could* opt for a digital only release to save on some of the costs and make it more financially viable.

This crossed my mind, too. But I'd like to believe that this game is more likely than 3 Untold would be, since it's not only a new game but one meant as a celebration of and farewell to the series.

Fingers crossed, anyway.

Yeah, I call bullshit. There's no such thing. MAKE THE GAME ALL MAPS, SEE IF I CARE.

On the off chance this isn't clear, that's just an overly literal translation.

I'm there.

Yeah, I'm still only on Stratum 3 of EOV. I have time, though.

EO6 will have a procedurally-generated dungeon that you'll need to map from scratch every time you enter.

EO6 will require you to correctly map the entire floor you're on before you can use a warp wire.

EO6 will take place in a setting with no printing press, so you'll have to hand-draw an extra copy of your maps to turn them in at the city.

EO6 will require you to map completely different games.

EO6 will replace FOEs with wandering maps, and if they catch you you have to complete them or face a party wipe.

EO6 will actually be Etrian Odyssey-themed Picross.

Yeesh. They're really cranking these games out at an even keel, aren't they?

No more than usual. This only feels like a quick turnaround because we had quite the wait for Etrian Odyssey V (it came out last year in Japan).

Yeah, these games come out way faster than I can play them. I just wrapped up EO3 recently. >_< (Technically still plugging away at the post-game, but sort of fell off the wagon.)

I was really hoping for a EO3 Untold. I'm sure I'll enjoy this but I really wanted to play a remake of that game

I feel like EO3 was when they worked out all the rough edges. It's still my favorite EO game. I don't need them to remake it, and I'm glad they're doing something else instead.

I thought 3 was the least polished/fun of the series and its the only one of 1-4 I haven't beaten to this day.

For me, the original EO2 is by far the worst, and 3 is the best.

The only EO game I wouldn't want to re-play given infinite time is the original EO2.

I agree, but have to admit that they done polished that turd until it sparkles because Untold 2 is among the best in the series.

3 was where I finally managed to really grab the series. I thought 1 was interesting but rough, and 2 was literally just an expansion pack. 3 was where everything finally clicked, where it was balanced and polished enough for me to really dive into it and see what the magic really was.

And yeah, maybe it doesn't need an Untold remake. I'm cool with that. I definitely appreciated 1 and 2 a lot more when I went back to them in their Untolds.

3 also has the best FOE theme. There's a lot of particularly good music in 3.

I liked EO2, but mostly because that game was perfectly suited to my party full of glass cannons. The battles in that game were sprints, not marathons. Unless I am getting my games confused.

I think you might have to accept that you are alone on this.

Yeah, that's where I'm at. In some ways, the original will always be my favorite, but I think 3 is the best of them (and I like it a lot). It already has most of the quality of life features of the later games, so the only reason to remake it would be to have it available on some sort of modern console.

I think you're right about this, and I really wish the game had been more up-front about it. I tried using a Beast to tank and it was a total waste of time.

Anyway, it's cool that they're making another EO game, and I'm honestly surprised it'll be on the 3DS again. But that's OK! I have no idea when I'll get to this one since I still have half of EO5 left to play. And since EO5 is the first one (I think?) to have a clock on the save screen, I can finally see just how much time it's taking me to complete it. But EO5 has been good enough so far that I'm confident the team is capable of doing right by the series finale.

There's a reason The End of Raging Waves remixes have become a staple of the series.

3 is my favorite, 4 is likely the actual best. 2 is pretty dull but I bounced hard off both 2 and Untold and didn't even touch Untold 2 because of that (Untold would be better without Grimores, may play it like that once I finish 5).

Nope, I didn’t like 3 either. I’m a huge fan of 2 and 4.

e- nothing against the game, it just didn’t grab my attention as well as the others.
