Is this the appropriate place to pimp my crappy blog? I write badly about video games, movies and comics at http://skoce.wordpress.com

And the name for it is a crappy placeholder that will hopefully change soon.

I don't have a blog. I used to have a not-a-blog but it had too many blog-like qualities so I stripped it down to just a nice clean display of the stuff I write every week on frelled up movies and the stuff I write every month on underrated games... with preview images and update schedulery. Close enough, right?

I have literally wondered this for years, going back to the days when I *sigh* read RPGamer. It was a long time ago! I ended up settling on Google-sheng, but I have no doubt that this is wrong and I will be spending ages mentally correcting myself if we are bedazzled with the proper pronunciation.

It's "Google" followed by that sound Hiryu's Cipher makes.

You're closest without going over. The original archaic version was "Googleshnag" which is almost as hard to try and say, coming from one of those made-up-languages extremely nerdy kids make with each other when they're like 5 (it had some kinda wacky reverse polish notation grammatical structuring too). Upon getting internet access, I decided to use it as my name for everything, assuming (incorrectly it turned out) that my actual name was too common to ever use without doing that lame string of numbers deal. My first ISP had some 9 character limit though, so I dropped the A, resulting in a horrible consonant mess not worth trying to pronounce.

So any time it needed speaking, I've always encouraged people to just say "Google." It's a simple, two syllable word devoid of any other meaning that's really easy to remember, and aside from possible confusion with "googol" fails to refer to anything other than me. You know, up until a search engine came along and decided to appropriate it, going on to become this massively popular internet megacorp, creating a bunch of services that block all usernames with "Google" anywhere in them, confusing newcomers that the whole "Ask Google" thing was some sort of synonym for "Look it up yourself" and not a Q&A column I ran, and just generally forcing me to drop my "only one user name" deal and use my actual name for stuff like my current e-mail account. The real annoying thing is that there really was a time when I was considering registering www.google.com for my not-a-blog, but back then registering urls for personal sites was kinda considered pretentious and I waited too long.

Short answer though? It's Google- like, well, Google, -sh- as in shoe, and then you're kinda on your own for the -ng.

Also, hey now. There was no shame in reading RPGamer back in the days when like 90% of its content was being written by me, Doug Hill, and that one behind the scenes admin-type guy whose name escapes me at the moment. Shame came only later, as it transformed into a strange bog of apathy, decay, and power-tripping 19-year old grocery baggers hating the readership away.

I'm pretty sure I took the plunge on the Dreamcast and Skies of Arcadia based heavily on your raves in the letters section, Googleshng.

I used to think the editorials section was pretty OK myself. Not sure if I'd feel the same way now though. I remember there were a few pretty good ones there when I read regularly, and I even contributed a couple (this was like...9 years ago).

Pronouncing it google-schwing would be ideal, because, you know. Boner reference.

Yeah, I definitely have vague memories of RPGamer being a decent place a long, long, long, long time ago.

Oh hey, this thread exists.

I started a new project where I write up retrospectives of Genesis and Mega Drive games released before Sonic the Hedgehog in chronological order. SPOILER ALERT: a lot of them are bad.

or something else that makes reference to comics terminology.
