I didn't choose it. My friend did. I was just foolish enough to go along.

Our chef pan-fried some leftover chicken livers from the pate he was making. Weird texture and after-taste. It felt like I was eating placenta.

There's a tamale stand at the farmer's market I usually buy frozen tamales by the dozen from since they make awesome tamales that last in my freezer and it's better than normal frozen food.

As mentioned, most of their tamales are great, but they have some rotating "special" ones that are... not. I got 3 in my latest order, and thank god it was only 3. They were like, thai curry vegetable tamales and they were terrible. Thai curry on its own is great, but this was a truly awful combination of flavors. The Mexican spices and flavors did not mix well at all with the Thai spices and flavors, and some of the vegetables also had an awful texture. It all came together into a truly foul experience. I couldn't even finish the third one.

Reminds me of when I accidentally put Indian curry powder in a Thai curry dish. It did ... not turn out well

Can you elaborate on why the clash? Truly interested.

I can't really elaborate on what exactly was going on chemically, but it was mostly a case of two great tastes that don't taste great together. It really made me realize how cuisines are like ecosystems, and putting one flavor into another without the deep culinary knowledge necessary for fusion was like introducing an invasive species.

Also took a bite out of what seemed like an innocent blueberry muffin but was covered in banana flavor; spit it right back out in surprise and disgust. (so I guess this is off-topic)

Bananas are a good, virtuous fruit when on their own or when they make their presence in a foodstuff known.

The most disgusting thing I've ever prepared was a can (wait for it) of rice from the dollar store. God knows why I took a look at a can of rice and thought "that might be good enough to eat." I opened the can and put in a pot to heat up. After some time I took a bite and threw all of it away immediately.

Nothing screws with your enjoyment of food more than flavor curveballs.

It's like watching people discover the currant when they bite into what they thought was a blueberry scone.

I love them, but they taste about as much like blueberries as they do salami.

If I bite into a cookie that appears to have oatmeal in it, I'd be more shocked if they weren't raisins.

Exactly. When your tongue is fully expecting one thing and gets something different, it colors your perception so much.

Olives were ruined for me when I was four because my uncle gave me one and said it was a grape.

Dealt with similar by forcing myself to eat olives every time I had a chance. But it took a while.

Last night, for a brief moment, I tipsily observed a bartender carefully pre-skewer martini olives, right next to a full plastic six-pan of bright red maraschino cherries. In my whiskey haze I wondered if olives and cherries might not be some kind of unfortunate spiritual cousins.

On flavor curveballs, one time I was out for lunch with friends, reached for my glass of unsweetened iced tea, and grabbed and drank my friend's glass of root beer instead. The memory has stuck with me ever since. This happened 12 years ago.

I was in Denmark as a teen and sometimes, when you asked for water, you would inexplicably recieve carbonated water.

I wish ice tea tasted like root beer...
