I am kind of sad it took only 20 posts to start talking about story in a Zelda game, as if it matters in the slightest.

I really hope Nintendo has gotten the stylus controls out of their system, because the only thing I could see keeping this from being awesome are the controls from the DS games. I actually like the DS Zeldas, but the controls were an acquired taste at best.

Yea, that looks a lot better, and TheSL linked me to a video of it in action. I still don't like the way the overworld looks (it looks so plastic-y and fake, like NSMB) but the dungeons look good, and more importantly, they brought back the sword lasers! Removing them was the secret worst thing Ocarina of Time did, and its always bugged me that they've been absent from Zelda for so long. Yea, they brought it back for Skyward Sword, but I'm still happy its back again!

Yeah I've gone into my experiences with the touchpad-only Zeldas before. I actually LIKED most of Spirit Tracks, but touch controls AND waggle controls in this sort of game are just unprecise and unreliable (and made the final boss of Spirit Tracks infuriating for me because Link kept interpreting a sword tap as a roll tap and rolled right into those fireballs like a derp and they hit Zelda and she had to restart her slow cast bar each time and it happened over and over and over and over and arrrrghble)

Anyway, yes. Real button controls plox.

It was even faster in the 3DS thread.

The trailer looks really fun! This reminds me of the last time I got super hyped for a new Zelda game: when I saw the first trailer for Phantom Hourglass in 2006. The trailer, for some reason, used the LttP Dark World music, which got me wondering "what does this have to do with LttP? Is there another dual-world mechanic?!"

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's explanation of why this one actually sucks too.

I've long felt that LttP is moderately overrated, but I still like it enough to be excited for this.

Ok, I was still hysterical about Earthbound when they showed this footage, so I kinda mistook this as a remake of an already perfect game.

A sequel I can like. Just too much good stuff in one tiny hour to take it all in at once.

So is this a remake or sequel?

Either way, picking it right the hell up.

This... was unexpected. Well, it shouldn't have been, but I wasn't thinking this soon. Dang, the 3DS is looking awesome now.

YES MEGA MAN 11

er oops wrong frothing demand center of my brain

OH MAN LINK TO THE PAST

I hope not all of the dungeons are just riffs on the old ones (the one in the trailer is pretty clearly the Tower of Hera), but I'll take what I can get because this is the TITS

i was skeptical when i heard the announcement, because LTTP is one of the greatest games of all time, and i'm even more skeptical now that i've seen the screenshots. What could they possibly add to LttP to make this worth existing?

I love LttP with all my heart but the puzzles aren't very intricate— just a lot of key-hunting. Just based on the video it seems like the game's a lot stronger in that regard.

A plot?

Interesting puzzles?

Characters worth giving a damn about?

More than a cursory use of the two-world gimmick?

Something other than fucking armor as half the dungeon prizes?

I found the first complaint about this game existing.

Reign in your expectations here, it's still a Nintendo-made Zelda game we're talking about.

Zelda games have great characters, even in minor roles. Say what you will about the DS games but Linebeck and ST Zelda are fun characters, and the series is consistently excellent about giving its NPCs lots of personality.

That doesn't start until Link's Awakening, though.

The last two portable Zeldas were good games trapped in shit mechanics. The fact that they're making a new 2D Zelda that's intentionally trying to stay true to its roots and that won't have some dumb overworld travel mechanic that sucks is good enough for me. Plus, the drawing thing looks like it'll create some neat solutions to puzzles.

Plot is one thing, but Link to the Past is pretty much the last Zelda whose NPCs generally lack any personality.

i think it'd be cool if they had more varied music instead of like the same song for every dungeon
i am looking forward to this

Link's Awakening's NPCs had more good character design than good character. Though I did quite like Lineback in PH and Zelda in ST, so I suppose strides have been made since LA.

Character design doesn't count for much with tiny Game Boy graphics. The charm is almost all in the writing.

Marin alone has more character than the everyone else in the series up to that point combined.

Why can't this be a good game in it's own right regardless of it's lineage? Even if this game still turns out to be just alright, we'll still be live in a world that has Link to the Past plus an alright Zelda game, so it's a net win for everyone.

I like to believe that since it's set in a Hyrule that is already established as having cuccos, it must be a thing that happens. Is there a game with cuccos where they won't attack you?

In Twilight Princess, attacking a cucco lets you take control of it, rather than making it hostile. I think, but can not conclusively recall, that you can then attack yourself, however.
