Default At 2017's end there'll be a new Zelda, a new Metroid, a new Mario, and a new Star Fox

"new Zelda" refers to BOTW which has been released already. In total, this will represent 24 years of waiting, depending on how you want to do the math. So about 6 years of waiting per game.

Code:
Breath of the Wild : March 3
Metroid 2: Return of Samus : September 15
Star Fox 2 : September 29
Mario Odyssey : October 27
Previous points I will compare to (and some other dates I won't but for which you might be curious):
Code:
Skyward Sword : November 20, 2011 (LBW: Nov 22, 2013)
Metroid Zero Mission : February 9, 2004 (Other M: Aug 31, 2010)
Star Fox Zero : April 22, 2016
Mario 3D World : November 22, 2013 (Mario Galaxy 2: May 23, 2010)
Days people will have been waiting:

Code:
3D Zelda : 1930 days ( 5 years, 3 months, 11 days) +
2D Metroid : 4967 days ( 13 years, 7 months, 6 days) +
Star Fox : 526 days ( 1 year, 5 months, 8 days) +
3D Mario : 1436 days ( 3 years, 11 months, 6 days)
Total: 8859 days (24 years, 99 days)

6 years, 25 days per game

I totally got the thread title from the podcast "Nintendo Voice Chat", but hey.

Default Going by initial release dates, not US/EU/AU/etc.

If you count 3D Land and 3D World as different beasts from standard 3D Mario, then we'll have been waiting 7 years, 5 months, and 4 days. If you count sandbox 3D Mario as a separate beast from standard 3D Mario then it's 15 years, 2 months, and 1 day. And then, assuming it's good sandbox 3D Mario,* we'll have been waiting 21 years, 4 months, and 4 days.

* Look, I want to like Super Mario Sunshine, but it seriously needs a Wind Waker HD style remaster to fix shit.

On the one hand, Super Mario Sunshine has those really awful hidden stars that you have to spend like 20 minutes or so of waiting between moving platforms while riding Yoshi

On the other hand, Super Mario Sunshine doesn't have fucking Unagi

I will not sanction this dismissal of LbW.

That's because they had an even bigger eel in Mario Sunshine.

suprisingly that eel is far less unsettling and horrifying to me, perhaps because it lacks those dead eyes and gnashing teeth

64 kept things basic but easy to learn to play; Sunshine had a lot of awkwardly executed stuff and poor design decisions. The loss of some of Mario's more useful jumps, the Yoshi platform making thing, the blue coin pixel hunts, how often you end up playing janitor instead of platforming, having to complete every dang episode in every dang world to unlock the final level, how often levels don't have much available to do, how 20% of the Shines in the frickin' game are purchases from that fat raccoon, the stupid spray-operated fragile boats, etc.

It looks and sounds better, and the turbo nozzle and just running around with Yoshi are fun, but the game is incredibly janky. It's like Mario fell into many of the same traps his 3D imitators did.

On the other other hand, it has Eely Mouth, which is way creepier.

EDIT: Ninji'd. BTW, not as creepy, you say?

eely mouth is weird but when you clean up its teeth it leaves you with a little heart of gold coins to show its appreciation

when you lure unagi out in JRB, it roams the sea in an endless loop, searching for nothing but its next meal, ready to strike Mario should he get in its way

Default I totally forgot this part of my post

I don't think the Metroid and Zelda communities have seen the numbers of new people entering these franchises for a long time. It's hard to measure objectively, but I've seen comments everywhere about people wanting to get into them. It's definitely a special time for those two.

If we roughly estimate Nintendo Power Vol. 69 got to people's hands on February 1, 1995, Star Fox 2 alone has been 8276 days coming.

Star Fox 2 is in a league of its own. We may have had other Star Fox releases since, but I've been waiting for this one a long, long time.
