This season was super good, especially once it ditched D&D and went full Shadowrun.

I made the Shadowrun connection as well. But I thought it was a weird fit, considering Shadowrun came out a half decade after the season takes place, and Neuromancer came out the year the season happens.

I don't have a great grasp of the cultural arc that those are embedded in, because I came of age right when it started really falling out of favor, at least by my reckoning. But I can't think of a ready pop-culture touchstone to really compare the Ep. 7 gutter runners against. It feels like the backporting of a late-80s inflection of counter-culture actively fighting a pernicious System, to an era where a marginal and perhaps liminal counter-culture merely rejected that System, even though a lot of the signifiers weren't dissimilar.

They felt roughly like a cross between the Warriors and X-Men to me.

Episodes 8+9 were Aliens. Episode 7 was not.

Just let it be a remake of Chopping Mall. Like, Chopping Mall, but with a good cast and writing.

Everyone who survived this show to live in Hawkins, Indiana circa 2016 voted for Donald Trump by the way.

There's a pretty good Jacobin article about how the Upside-Down is a metaphor for the Neoliberal De-Industrialization rot that was beginning to take hold in the yet-to-be-named Rust-Belt. The Reagan-Bush lawn-signs that pepper the Halloween scenes in season 2 don't do much to dissuade me from the idea that this is the intended read.

Also, Joyce Byers is a hero of the Labor Left, and I raise my fist in solidarity when she puts a pack of Camels on store credit.

Only if Dick Miller can come back for a cameo.

If we are doing Dick Miller cameos, then it should be a remake of Gremlins 2, but in a mall.

I mean, me, but I never have. I can't speak for other Canadians. Plus, me and JBear probably won't binge it until 2 days later.
