Digital for NA I believe. Japan is getting a physical release, at least in the form of this CE.

I thought the Adventures of Mana remake was excellent?

Or there is at least one review claiming so.

This isn't... necessarily a bad thing.

They'd make a mint just selling that diorama.

Adventures of Mana may be excellent. How much is it though? Do I really want to part with $40 for a Secret of Mana remake if it has all the production value of a mobile game?

The answer is maybe. I haven't seen enough of it yet. I'm not a fan of this new art direction but throw in some music and it may be enough when I see it in action. I'd also consider the game may be well-suited for Vita if it's, at heart, a mobile title. But this thing would never hit my Vita. I'd play it on PS4. Am I paying $40 to play a mobile game on my TV? Again, it depends.

Show me a Let's Play of the opening 15 minutes and I'll have a better idea if this is a must-have or a game I'll pick up when it's on a PSN sale or if it's something I'll skip entirely.

Calling it a mobile game because of its production value is some NeoGAF-level discourse. Think of it as a PS2 game displaying in HD if you makes you feel better.

I mean but come on. It really looks like it was delveloped for mobile first. It's pulling from the same design sensibilities as the Adventure remake, screens so far show inconsistent textures and lighting, and it's just got that "made-on-the-cheap" feel. Which is all fine. It could play like a dream. I'm just struck by the low level of production design and all the work put into the special edition. It strikes me as that someone knew they had an instant seller on their hand and figured that by putting some love into the packaging and extras they could bring on some more profit. Again that's not a judgement call. Just an observation of the descrepency.

Don't know what this means. I've never gone to NeoGAF.

Some gameplay footage.

It does look better than Adventure of Mana. Still not sold on the art direction but it does look a modicum better than what I would expect. I could also do without the voice acting.

I think it looks great. The chest has a great thunk to it when Boy throws it to the ground. The backgrounds look nice. Kikuta's on board. The lighting is pretty much non-existent but I'm okay with that. I'm fully on board with Square Enix bankrolling smaller projects.

It's definitely of the same design philosophy as Adventures. Though, is it just me, or did they reduce the hitstun when the player gets hit? I hope the annoying stunlock you can get stuck in is one of the things they consider a bug.

The shopkeeper doesn't dance, enemies don't get whacked....I don't think they get it.

It's a weird age when Japan gets the physical releases of games while the English release is only digital. It's like a twisted return to SNES days. If you don't play in Japanese, you're still missing out on games (in physical form).

True, but her blouse now has a much lower cut. In contrast, I've always liked Alena's original character design in Dragon Quest 4.

Her clothes are tight enough in certain places that you can see she's skinny and curvy. However, she's almost completely covered up and about half of her garments fit loosely so her appearance isn't smarmy. I wish more game developers had the courage to design characters like Alena. I also wish newer iterations didn't trim away her clothing.

Edit: Anyway, here's the definitive look for the Mana dudes:

I wouldn't have minded an art style like this:

Would be fun to see remakes or faux retro games or something more in line with the art style of 90s game boxes.

I disagree, that made me recoil from the screen in horror at Purim's face. That really overblown perspective art isn't my style either.

Everyone knows a real remake should look like the Katsuya Terada art from Nintendo Power

The girl's eye looks wonky in that fan art. Otherwise, very nice.

Idle thought: Do you think Randi, Purim and Popoie were inspirations for Harry, Hermione and Ron? There's the shaggy-haired hero, the strong willed girl who gets along with the hero but isn't romantically involved with him, and the goof who jokes with / grates on the girl a lot. Maybe this group dynamic is an archetype that goes much farther back?

Much, much further back. Pretty sure Harry Potter is an example of the hero in the monomyth. So is Randi in SoM, now that I think about it.

Almost all fantasy is the Monomyth. There are differences in the fine print but most fantasy stories follow the same basic structure. (And this is a pretty persistent and unfortunately often accurate criticism of fantasy narratives.)

I swear the group was based on her kids and a friend or something since it was originally the bedtime stories she made up for them.

The PlayStation (like, the first one) gets mentioned in the books, at least. If they were set 5 years earlier, maybe it would be a Super Nintendo instead?

But yeah, JK Rowling knowing a relatively obscure SNES era Squaresoft RPG, not likely.

I do like the look of it, but man I really do wish the graphics were a bit higher quality. Something along the lines of Dragon Quest Builders style graphics sorta..

Sure, but I'm also wondering about the group dynamic. Are there any traditions or archetypes of those?

Another idle observation: All the old art of Purim was frowny and all her new artwork is smiley, making her the opposite of Kirby somehow.
