DKCR and its sequel have very unique physics, unlike the its SNES predecessors. Donkey Kong is meant to feel heavy and he has a huge amount of inertia, but he is actually pretty agile once he gets going - so the challenge is, how can I get through this segment without stopping? Jumping is a better form of attack than rolling, also.

Returns 1 has a bit more level variety than DKC1, but Tropical Freeze is where they really take the gloves off. DKC2 is classically excellent because of its single good gimmick per level, but Tropical Freeze has two gimmicks per level, usually combining by the end.

I don't really want to complain about Mega Man Legacy Collection's challenges, but it really sucks that they unlock in sequential order, so you have to suffer through a lot of challenges from the worst NES Mega Man game (the first) before you can get to challenges from games that are actually good.

I thought Blaster Master Zero was mostly kind of plodding. I finally did finish it, but over and over I took months long breaks from the game and mostly forget about it. Then I would come back on a whim and remember, "Oh, this game is boring. Right."

I guess for me the issue is that it's not a very interesting action game, or a very interesting exploratory platformer. I'm not sure what they were trying to do with this.

The kind-of-postgame area was the most interesting, though.

Lost Sphear so far has been just what the doctor ordered: a relatively chill story with cool battle mechanics and nice graphics. Pretty nice pace to it all, UNTIL NOW. The game just made me fight the same fucking boss three times in a row, each iteration getting progressively harder, and when I finally beat it a third time, he EXPLODED and did enough damage to wipe my whole party out, thus giving me a game over. Fuck that stupid shit. I immediately closed the game out of anger and I'm not sure when I'll get back to it (probably later today tho).

That is just absolutely infuriating!!! Fuck!

It’s a shame that the single coolest twist that Mighty Gunvolt Burst brings to the table WRT Mega Man gameplay (being able to customize Robot Master powers to A ridiculously granular extent) is so inelegant. Even if your dreams for custom abilities are something as modest as a rotating shield of water or a charge-blast for a Damage boost you need to track down hidden upgrades in multiple levels (and, in all likeliehood, replay the same level multiple times) to get the components, so say nothing of grinding up the CP needed to actually build them.

And if your dreams are more eccentric, well, good luck, buddy. Have fun replaying each level twice and hoping that you get enough energy by the time the final boss rolls around to get that going.

Rockstar looking at their meditation on the costs of civilization and deciding that their next move would be to toss out an expansion for it with zombies because the kids like the CoD was the most Rockstar thing ever.

I... am not really enjoying Panzer Dragoon Orta. I'd LIKE to be able to dodge the mountains of missiles that come hurtling toward me, and yet it just doesn't happen. I'd LIKE to be able to anticipate attacks instead of getting blindsided by them, yet that doesn't happen either. I'd LIKE to like the game, but it's pretty obvious that's not going to happen. It feels like trying to guide the Goodyear blimp through London during the blitz.

Apparently the original 360 GOTY edition of Redemption (as opposed my own, which is the newest edition with "Xbox One" branding along the top edge of the case) doesn't include the borked Undead Nightmare patch on-disc. I could potentially employ a workaround by tracking down that version and then keeping my console offline so it won't download the latest update, but at this point I'm so disgusted by Rockstar's total apathy regarding such a widespread issue that I really can't be bothered.

Gravity Rush 2 is a game with charming art direction and bottom of the barrel mission design. It's the worst mix of escort missions, trial-and-error stealth, tedious fetch questions, brain-dead combat challenges, and all wrapped in a level of tutorialization that would make a last-gen Nintendo game blush. A pretty big disappointment all told.

I just realized that the camera changing in Pokemon Y means I can't easily determine where any location is.

If I want to go West in Pokemon Black, I move to the left. If I want to go West in Pokemon Y I make a guess, check my map, figure out I went the wrong way, get kind of an idea of which direction I need to be going, figure out I went the wrong way again, and turn the game off.

like
objectively
i realize X and Y were the best Pokemon games when they came out
but so many little things bug me about this game that I've never finished it

I hear Sun and Moon are excellent! But then I think "yeah, but X and Y were terrible, and everyone seemed to like those, too."

*shakes fist and yells at cloud*

It's been a while, I don't recall that being an issue anywhere except maybe Lumiose City. Isn't the camera still usually fixed north?

Usually. Unless the route connects to Lumiose somehow. In which case the camera is pointed wherever.

For instance, leaving the Northwest exit leads to a route that goes Southwest. The camera is pointed towards the West for this route.

People seem to have turned on X and Y in other corners of the internet. I love the game but I won't lie that getting around Lumiose (even if it's just a big pokeball) is a pain due to the lack of obvious navigation cues

For a game about keeping calm, Celeste is driving me very close to real fury in some parts. A lot of it is me trying to get as many strawberries as I can, despite the game itself telling me not to worry about it. I very much do, Celeste. I am four chapters in and I have 72 berries, three cassettes and one crystal heart, which I didn’t know were things to find until I stumbled onto one. I may need to get my own feather If I want to finish this...

Yeah, I got pretty frustrated in parts too, and it actually spurred me to order the 8bitdo SN30+ controller because I couldn't do diagonal dashes consistently on the Joy-cons. Don't think I would have finished without that.

I got almost all of the strawberries that I noticed, but still missed a few in each level and had to revisit them, so I'd say to wait and do that. It's a bit easier to find them the second time through because you can start from different checkpoints, and it shows you which ones you missed in each segment.

At this point, I'm almost done with the second pass, and have gotten the strawberries and tapes from all but the last main level.

Same. It's not the first fully 3D Pokémon jRPG (that would be Genius Sonority's Pokémon Colosseum), but it is the first fully 3D Pokémon jRPG that Game Freak made. Before this, they had just used 3D for title screens, some battle SFX, and backgrounds that were still navigated the same way as the 2D game.

Keeping that in mind, it's not hard to see why Lumiose City ended up being such a pain in the ass to navigate. It's a very tech demo-y place, basically a "Holy shit look what we can do now that we can make these games in full 3D" area that for better or worse ended up like something more out of a 90s 3D game than one made in 2013.

Of course, Lumiose's outer areas are the exception, not the rule. While there are more dynamic camera angles in some places than past games, Pokémon X and Y still primarily stick to the same ol' 2D navigation of past games.

the camera being weird wouldn't bother me so much if they gave me control it, or at least threw a compass on screen

Diagonal jumping has been an issue for me thus far. I can’t afford a new controller for a while, so I suppose I’ll just have to try harder?

My other main gripe is I’m not getting much out of the story so far. I’m not very interested in whatever relatively mundane problem has spurred Madeline to climb this hellish magical mountain. I also didn’t find the hotel manager nearly as charming as the developers wanted me to. Theo is cool, and I enjoyed his breathing exercise with the feather in the gondola.

I had success with the d-pad buttons on the joy-cons. If you hold two buttons, you're going to go diagonal.

I got most everything in the game, but stalled out at a few of the golden strawberries and one c-side.

Orta does seem to want to overwhelm the player. The previous games could get pretty hectic, but the amount of crap coming at you was always just manageable. Orta just bombards you with too much stuff.

In RDR2, the mount horse button and grab person button are the same button, so you end up accidentally tackling people instead of getting on your horse. So I get away from the search and assume I'm good to go back because there's nothing signaling otherwise. Nope, they're still waiting for me and kill me before I can revive my horse so I lose a really good horse.

Now I have to decide whether to replay two whole missions or search for a new horse because Rockstar doesn't seem to understand simple fucking control schemes.

Oh wow...I heard of similar issues where drawing your gun was the same button as greeting people or something like that. What a pain...

I have some trouble with this game and the stock PS4 dualshock controller. Just by pressing on the sides of the 'up' d-pad can trigger a diagonal input, which screws up my vertical dashes.

Phantasy Star 2's ever-present dungeon foreground details, huge corridors, and painfully short distance from the edge of the screen before the camera moves combine to make dungeons in which I am nigh-constantly lost. Even in the first dungeon! Final Fantasy 1 has similar maze-like dungeon design, but because it doesn't do these things, I have no problem navigating its dungeons.

Okay, I love that I can have Neverwinter Nights on my phone and all, but the mobile port could definitely stand to be better optimized for mobile. Game can't decide whether it wants to turn the camera or make my character move with the analog drag cursor; wish there was a toggle or a way to turn the latter off.

Oh well, it's still a new port; it was released just this month.

Because I am obsessed with actually playing through this game some day I am currently messing around with the Phantasy Star 2 source code disassembly trying to fix my issues with the camera.

Shockingly, I've actually managed to make the camera update with every step, but it doesn't correct itself if you reach the edge of the screen and walk back. Frankly I'm astonished I've got this working as well as I have. I haven't actually, you know, coded anything - I'm just ripping parts out of other functions, throwing them into the movement code, and seeing what happens.

Ideally, I want to find the chunk of code that returns you to the last map you were in after a battle - it centers the view.

PS: Assembly coding looks like it must be hell

EDIT: I am upset that someone put the Blaster x 2 in the second dungeon

and that running only works when you don't need it

Mining out the last few bits of content in Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin and although the sheer breadth of the game is certainly impressive, a lot of it is some hot bullshit

perhaps you need to just git gud? the dark souls trilogy is a masterclass in game design and there's definitely never any tedious, unfun bullshit crammed in it!
