In ten years living in Barcelona, I had never run into a carpenter bee. They have wings with this deep blue color... They are downright beautiful.

Turns out they don't form hives and aren't aggressive. They nest in wood, and I do have these old wooden posts in the backyard. I've seen about three of them since the spring....

They are also really, really large. Large enough that the dog barks at them when they land in the backyard. >_<

I probably should do something about those wooden posts before I have to post in the "Animals Want You Dead" thread....

Crossposting that Dracula (the forum member, not the fictional character) made a zine about bugs.

Aw thanks Johnny. That zine was real fun to make. Definitely a highlight of the year for us.

Also Buge I hadn't read that cat poem before and I loved it

A female stingray gives birth in captivity at least 9 years after having had contact with any male specimen whatsoever.

Freckle, an 11-year-old eagle ray, proved she doesn’t need a man when she gave birth last month in a tank with six other female ocellated eagle rays, two leopard sharks, a white-spotted guitarfish (also a ray) and many colourful and varied ‘bony’ fish.

Probably not? Most species can't interbreed like that.

I thought female rays (and sharks and other animals) had ways to store sperm for very long periods of time before using it to fertilize eggs.

There's a case of animal parthenogenesis somewhere once every 1-2 years. The animal messiah market is getting crowded.

Maybe going all in with just practical effects was a bad decision for the latest Planet of the Apes movie.

I am not convinced that that animal does in fact want me to appreciate it.
