Couldn't make it past "Gayface" and "Vag Flaps" about 20 seconds in.

Anyway. Tomb was pretty easy, if a little slow at times. Once we had the airship picked up Gau. Then dove into the final dungeon for Fixed Dice. Then grabbed the Behemoth Suit as I had issues with Gau's defenses, so I wanted the snow muffler. That wasn't a winning fight yet, so we went into the Ancient Castle and threw a rock at Katana Soul, which as we all know is the ultimate dishonor so they committed seppku and Setzer went from the weakest party member to... well likely still the weakest. He just does damage, after all. Still sometimes that's what you want, won the next fight for the muffler, then dove Pheonix Cave and got Locke.

Now I need to make a list of rages to add to the Veldt and loot Narche. Little Paladin Shield/Rage Grinding and a bit more treasure hunting and we should be good for the end game.

It's kind of dumb that rages are legit for the challenge but natural magic is not.

Honestly, I would've made it a 'no Esper' challenge rather than 'no magic'. Sure that leaves the option open of teaching your entire crew the few spells that can be learned off items, not to mention Terra and Celes' natrual magic, but it still keeps you from making everyone statistically identical killing machines, plus it just makes the rules a bit easier to parse re: Rages and Lores and jank.

(Honestly I've been thinking of just going 'screw the rules' and following my own 'No Esper' variant with the characters assigned to me.)

Yeah, I was planning on bending the rules and using Terra's natural magic. Once I figure out which version I'm going to play and how, of course...

I just got an SNES Classic yesterday, so I was thinking of trying to load a bugfixed version and playing it that way. Has anyone else done anything like that?

I played through this hack on an SNES Classic. It features more than just bugfixes, but I'm sure patches only featuring them would be fine too.

Eh, Gilgabot said you can use natural magic if you want to. I'd go with Morgi here, since Celes/Terra are both kinda dull without magic.

Gau is absolutely Chemist tier.

The rules of the challenge were basically, "just do whatever works for you, have fun."

If you haven't played FF6 to death, I'd simplify the rules as follows:
  • Play the game normally up to the Narshe esper defense.
  • Uh... in fact, just play the esper defense however you want, too. If you're not especially familiar with the game, it's not necessarily easy.
  • When the game gives you the opportunity to form your own party, include as many of your assigned characters as possible.
  • Don't equip Espers, but feel free to do literally anything else with your characters.
  • In the World of Ruin, after finding the airship, recruit your assigned characters at the earliest opportunity. Most characters can be recruited without too much trouble, even for an inexperienced party; Umaro and especially Locke are a bit tougher than the rest.
  • Until you've recruited your full party, fill your spare slots with whoever you want.
  • Ask for advice if you get stuck.
  • For the love of Banon, get the RunningShoes/Hermes Sandals from the basement in South Figaro. (They're hidden well enough that no one without access to Nintendo Power would ever have found them.)

Also the Moogle Charm from Narshe for the multi-party dungeons.

Then they shouldn't say the rules are no natural magic!

Edit: To clarify, I personally don't care how people have fun with their game. But I'm not going to do a challenge and then not follow the rules. Why even do it then?

The rules actually don't take that hard of a line to begin with. The rules are very loose, both in general and in the specific case of natural magic.

This is just an experimental for fun thing because for many reasons the challenge doesn't quite work with the game, not a strict challenge run like the FF5 event.

Am I on the wrong page?

I was quoting from this, linked earlier in the thread.

But also, uhhh, even on the same page you linked it says the same thing:

Quote:
3.2. If you really need it: You can use Magic Terra and Celes learn naturally.

I dunno man, the official page seems pretty cut and dried. Sure there might be like, weird errata on a blog on tumblr, but if I'm going to go by some rules...

Yes, it's very cut and dried:

The letter and the spirit of the rules are, "I dunno, do whatever."

It also says
Quote:
Do your best. This just a little game. For fun!
. So actually, there's no rules.

Yeah. That's what I'm trying to say.

It's a very loose event.

Alright, then I go back to my original statement:
Quote:

I don't think this rule is a good rule. If it requires having another rule saying actually it's not a rule, then the rule should just not exist.

Luckily, there are no hard and fast rules at all for this extremely loose event.

If that's how you'd want to play it, that's fine!

Wait. No.

Leap. Items + Leap.

Leap him into the Veldt and then never get him back.

I decided to go forward with my 'No Espers' variation, which I'm already enjoying more than the original ruleset.

I decided to give myself a bit of a boost, all above board of course, by doing some level grinding on Lete River. I used to do this on the original cart as well, just get something to hold down 'A' on a Turbo Controller while on the second loop of Lete River, so I kept going in circles, meanwhile I had Cursor set to 'Memory' so Bannon would keep casting Health. I forget what Terra's level was when I continued, but she had over 1400 HP and knew Fire 2, so Ultros went down like a chump.

But aside from also getting like 100k GP from it, it won't be a huge benefit in the other scenarios. Locke, Edgar, and Sabin drag the level average down enough that Celes only joined at Lv14, and I expect Cyan will be similar. At least Terra's level boost will mean she'll be on par with the rest of the party by the time she rejoins post-Vector.

Speaking of Vector, looking ahead, the one boss fight I'm most worried about will be the one while escaping on the Mode 7 cart ride from the Magitek factory, since I'll have to fight it solo with Cyan (technically I'll have to fight Ultros #2 with only Cyan as well, but he's a bit less concerning). That's probably going to be the last major challenge, aside from a handful of WoR sticking points.
