I like "natural magic" better than "no magic" conceptually but that does leave you somewhat open to the risk of teaching your main four Ultima from items.

Who says it's natural to learn magic from items?

I like the idea of this thing but the rules seem a lot more ad hoc and up to the player, rather than cut and dry like the 4JF. I suppose it could be fun. I've never actually tried doing any sort of challenge run on FF6, and trying to do segments of that game with only one character sounds intimidating to me.

The point is you can accidentally learn magic from items unless you're very careful. You probably wouldn't accidentally learn Ultima, but the elemental shields teach the -aras, for example.

It's a no magic run? Not sure why there's any real ambiguity about using magic or summoning espers (under the magic menu)?

Equipping espers for stat ups is also a no-go, which is fine.

He's at the bottom of a tower you likely won't climb unless you get Mog and want to grab the Air Anchor (can't remember what other chests are up there)? Getting Relm is going to be a bit of a pain but otherwise I can't see it being too bad.

Honestly the only mildly dead weight I can see is Terra and Relm, but as others have said Terra gets great equipment so it's not huge, she just wouldn't be able to use Morph for any advantage (not that you ever need to use it in a regular playthrough either lol).

Morph doubles attack damage, too. It's at least as usable here as in vanilla.

She can also use all swords, heavy armor and shields and a handful of other things like flails. She's good, really.

Same with Celes.

You're not supposed to break rods... but I may do it just to speed up some grinding before Phonix/Kefka.

Wait, no. An hour in and I still can't get video from my SNES into my Audio tuner (sound works fine).

This is actually hard.

Huh, either the Video out over multi on my SNES is broken of I have two bad cables. Could be either, really, think I last plugged this in about 5 years ago.

Edgar, Gau, Celes, Shadow. I think I just won?

Like, either of Edgar or Gau is basically GG. I'll take Shadow over Locke any day of the week on top of that, and Celes is better than Setzer for 75% of the game.

Gilg says: "TERRA AND CELES’S NATURAL MAGIC CAN BE USED IF YOU WANT TO BEND THAT RULE."

I might do that, since Celes is really boring otherwise... It's not like she'll actually learn anything gamebreaking as long as I don't dip into the Dino Forest, right?

Celes learns Hastega, but I don't remember if it's at a reasonable level. Maybe Meteor too, because I always felt she leaned towards kinda Time Mage, but that one's absolutely not at anything reasonable.

Looks like the end of the season, too. I guess they're doing the Voltron thing and having shorter seasons at a, presumably, faster pace.

Man, I thought I was completely desensitized, and fully expected parodies of some of the more incongruous bits in the sequence, but...

Voice acting really does count for a lot.

Ok, I got Locke, Cyan, Gau, and Celes.

Getting Cyan and Locke in the WoR will be a bit tough, but do-able.

How is everyone planning to play out segments that don't include your 4 characters? Kill off everyone else, or just kinda let the game give you extra party members until you can control your lineup 100%?

Also can someone tell me what the go-to best Rages for Gau are? I love this game but I don't know too much about many of its mechanics due to most of them being extreme excess of what you need to actually beat the game.

You can get Lit 2, Fire 2, and other out of depth spells fairly easily. I recommend Djibriel’s guides for details.

You won't do very well on the Lete River segment if you try killing everyone off

I'm just playing the game as it comes. The early parts aren't as easy as I remembered anyway -- Terra kept dying in Koltz until I went back and bought armor. No reason to solo Edgar; it'd just leave me overleveled for later. The rules were vague for this because the game wasn't meant for this sort of challenge. When the game puts the reins in my hands, I'll go with my party, but I'm not sweating it until then.

It would be interesting to see a romhack that forces your party on you at all times.

Noiseblaster owns the early game.

Serpent Trench took solo Gau 3 tries, Trilium absorbs Aqua Rake but Gigavolt also one shots you.

Solo Edgar next, should be a cakewalk. Then solo Locke, which will be fun.

Edit: Bannon still can’t die during Edgar/Terra’s bit. To tell you the truth it’s never come up before.

Tunnel armor took two tries. It can melt Locke in one Fire spell (never saw tech laser) but the second time it never bothered.

Correction: it owns the entire WoB. Think I've seen four total random enemies it's not effective against, maybe five. The other MVP has been the Wevyrn rage with it's chance to Cyclonic the entire enemy formation into single digits, easy pickings for the Flash or Auto Crossbow.

Solo Locke for Flame Eater was a bit of a pain, died on my first attempt but gained enough levels running the house to take two Explodes from bombs so the second went smoother. Did both crack the ice rod from the house as well as all three magicite items I had picked up for that one.

We killed Ultima and then left the floating continent since we were low on consumables, trying to think if there's anything else I'd need to do in the WoB.

Tentacles is one of the most akward bosses in the game. Can't access Edgar's equip/relic screens before doing the fight, really annoying boss that likes to stun lock you, no save point beforehand.

Solo Edgar is not a smart way to go into this fight. You basically get one action between each grab and the grabs will take off half your HP, so you're looking at one X-Potion/Elixir every other turn, I had 5 X-Poitions going in. I also failed to buy any ice/fire rods, which I expect would have let him end it in 4-5 actions (they only have 7K HP each).

I tried about 5 runs with solo Edgar: Break Blade the two who can be petrified then chainsaw the one vulnerable to death then bio blaster down the one vulnerable to poison. Never got a single break proc. When I switched to trying the chainsaw first I found it couldn't kill the one that can be killed with Doom.

Given that I burnt 40 of the 70 smoke bombs I bought getting here with Celes I didn't feel like going back to buy some rods so I just left her alive. Mostly tossing potions from the back row, with a wall ring to stop Bio. The thing I did notice was that the Bio Blaster inflicts a pretty potent Damage Over Time effect I haddn't tried before (was going to kill the poison one last), may have been possible to just stall while that mostly kills them with Edgar.

Oh, well. Should be the last place I use someone other than my four this run. Setzer is just sitting in a Cafe waiting to be recruited and then it's one dungeon until we get Gau back, and Gau is honestly pretty broken in WoR. Maybe I'll avoid using Nightshade for now...

Still I think the last place I had people other than my four party members alive was picking up the early game rages at end of Sabin's route (aside from random fights where Celes/Strago/Terra weren't quite done killing themselves before we killed all the bad guys), and there's nothing I can do about that. So pretty good, all told.
