There were, like, fourteen "Ocean's [X]" movies, plus several Italian Jobs and a bunch other heist films. The world can sustain two of them crewed entirely by women

I think Buge means, if that's the kind of thing you want, there's one of that kind of thing coming out soon to support.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were contractually obligated to show those logos in the trailer as part of the agreement for being able to use them in the movie. I doubt anyone at Disney seriously thought "oh, when they see the logo for that online shopping site, they'll be lining up to buy tickets!"

Or then again, they might. Maybe they can't distinguish between why people would be excited for Zangief and Bowser but not Amazon and whatever.

I doubt it will be a significant factor in the movie, though -- they probably want to save that for stuff they own, hence no Google search (though I am curious now if Disney would want to spin off their own search engine from this).

And I don't think the Disney princesses and Star Wars stuff will play a huge part. Remember Bad Anon in the first one's trailer? And Hero's Duty?

Those were quickly shuffled out and 95% of the rest of the movie was spent in Sugar Rush, so much so that the NAME of the movie in Japan WAS "Sugar Rush."

So I wouldn't sweat anything from this trailer just yet.

The difference, as I see it, is that Bad Anon is actually relevant to the story at large. It ties into the premise of "the secret lives of video game characters", and in fact shows the plot when Ralph announces he doesn't want to be the bad guy anymore. The scene exists first and foremost to serve the story, not as an excuse to go "hey, remember this?". That it lends itself to cameos is surely intended, but the scene would function just as well— from a story perspective— if they were all parody knock-offs.

I don't see that in the Disney Princess scene. I don't see how a gathering of Disney Princesses relates to "Ralph and Vanellope visit the internet", nor how it furthers the story. It looks like nothing more than a vector to make jokes about the princesses' own movies and tropes, which is why it comes back to "this looks like something that exists purely for brand synergy".

Sure, it's possible this is getting played up for the trailers, in some RPO-inspired directive to just include Things People Recognize. But it's not just the cameos that worry me, it's the lack of any story (or good jokes).

I think the Bad Anon meeting being integral to the plot is probably more a symptom than the cause for it being featured so heavily.

I figured since the internet is swamped with "What Disney Princess Are You?" or "Disney princesses reimagined as X" things it will tie into that somehow.

This looks a bit better. Hopefully the 'lol internet' jokes will be brushed aside quickly and gritty racer with Vaneloppe vs Gal Gadot takes over.

Yeah, they... could have made a "self-aware" joke about Disney Animation vs Pixar that didn't involve casual racism.

Gonna be real I ended up loving the original W-I-R but the last thing I want to see is 90 minutes of Global Powercorp Disney making wry jokes about itself.

Maybe that room with the Disney princesses can keep filling and filling after each new acquisition the company makes, until it explodes from over-occupancy. It'll be like that rabbit from the previous trailer, except with corporate greed instead of pancakes.

No. It's making fun of someone's ethnicity and belittling them for it.

If it turns out this happens, I will watch this, but only if this happens. I give no concern over being spoiled by the outcome of this film, much as how the Emoji Movie gives me no cause to avoid spoilers either and I actively sought out the leaked script for Sausage Party.

I thought Scotland was itself one of those peoples conquered and subjugated by the British.

And that it's never appropriate for a dominant culture (in this case, white American culture) to belittle foreign ethnic or racial signifiers.

Regarding trailers vs movies, did anyone notice Coco's trailers had more energetic versions of the movie's shots? It was the "same" shots but with the characters more animated and the line readings more spunky. I wonder if they're doing the same thing here. Not that it would fix problems as big as what we're seeing here, but it could make a bit of a difference.

A couple years ago when I was imagining what a WIR Online would be like, I imagined emulation figuring prominently into the story. Emulation would allow pre-internet characters like Ralph to either be pirated to worthlessness or re-published forever on new platforms, depending how it's used. Emulation could be embodied in a Two Face-like character who would represent both possibilities, and all the old characters entering the internet would come to this character, hoping for the best but not always getting it. Disney is obsessed with copyright elongation and combatting piracy, and making a movie about the two sides of emulation would allow them to express their obsession in a modern context.

Well, whatevs.

I don't think it's controversial to think that mocking a national accent is bad and I'm kind of surprised to see anyone going to bat to defend it

Scotland, Ireland, and Wales all got shat on by the real Britons (the Upper Class/Peerage English) so yeah no. All the "Lessers" got out of empire was death on the seas and famine at home.

Edit: all three almost lost their language, culture, and identity. The only reason we have any Gaelic, Cornish, and Welsh speakers left is the sheer tenacity of people who hid themselves.

Dude, Ample, you need to step back reassess this discussion. Madhair expressed concern and displeasure at a national accent being mocked in a mean-spirited joke made by a massive media conglomerate from entirely outside that country. It's a fair complaint, and a lot of other people found it in poor taste, too. It's absolutely a "punching down" joke and we don't have to reneg all discourse on racism to acknowledge that.

Scots may have benefited materially from British imperialism, but Appalachian and Southern whites have also benefited from American white supremacy. But to lump them all in together and say "tough titties, you're white, get over it" completely ignores all of the historical, economical and political levels of power imbalance present between those populations. Ireland was part of Great Britain during the height of its empire too, but to argue that they're open season because they benefited would be insane, what with the whole "committing economic genocide via the potato famine" thing. Even today, Scotland is in an inferior position within Britain, having voted against Brexit overwhelmingly and getting dragged along anyway.

And besides, "White isn't a race" is something we're constantly trying to hammer home (even if our privilege lets us benefit from whiteness all the while, but that's a largely American/Western European phenomenon). Scots are still a different ethnicity than Anglo-Saxons and Germans and Swedes and Slavs and so on. Racism between "white" people is a huge problem in England and elsewhere. Polish people are being discriminated against and deported in England alongside Pakistanis.

If there's one complaint about Madhair's original post, it's that this joke may not count specifically as "racist" because it's by white people, at other white people, but (even that is debatable because it could still be described as mirroring systemic power structure oppression of one group by another). But even if it's not, that doesn't negate the fact that it's a mean spirited joke punching down at a nationality by people who don't even have a stake in that nation. And bigotry from one white group to another doesn't negate the harms of white supremacy against POC. Nobody is arguing that.

Implication that someone is racist because they’re concerned about how a joke is making fun of someone’s ethnicity is unexceptable. Yes the scots are part of the British empire, but yes it’s also a culture that was oppressed and marginalized. It’s almost like it’s a complex issue and it’s not going to be solved with condescending message board posts.

Keep it civil or thread’s getting locked.

FWIW, they could have easily turned the joke around and have the other princesses just stare and flounder in their own incomprehension, making the lack of understanding the butt of the joke, and thus show ignorance as a barrier that should be overcome. While the film is trying to "other-ize" or diminish Merida, the internet at large found her awesome for keeping true to her heritage.

Seriously.

Maybe "racist" isn't the best word. Elistist. Biggoted. Shitty. Take your pick.

As a southerner I have the same reaction to lazy "LOL dumb redneck" jokes.
