#28 Life Force (NES, NA, 1988, Konami)
Created by unknown
Votes: 2 for 59 points
Highest: Octopus Prime (#1)

A spiritual sequel to Gradius, Salamander/Life Force utilized this captivating painting of a space dragon in flames surrounding a burnt husk of a planet in an empty sea of stars. It's gorgeous and a stunning piece of art, and the NES template Konami used for their early boxes turned it into an even classier sample of artistic/design prowess. So good!

Alas, I don't know who actually did the art for Konami on this.

Here's a logo-less version (well, it's a slightly cropped MSX box, but you can focus a bit more on the details):

I'll have two lined up for tomorrow! We're gonna take a break from #1s this weekend.

Default For the record, OctoMom only ever bought one of those games for him.

There are two NES games where Tiny Octo took one look at the box art and declared UNTO THE VERY CORE OF HIS VERY BEING "That looks RADICAL, I'mma play this dang thing forever!"

Not coincidentally, those are also the only two video games whose covers I wouldn't hesitate to hang up on me wall.

Life Force was one of those two games.

#27 Demon Attack (Atari 5200, NA, 1982, Imagic)
Created by unknown
Votes: 2 for 60 points
Highest: Ixo (#1)

This is a majestic box art, taking inspiration from DIY crafting and some imagination to transform plastic dinosaur toys and a star backdrop into something special. It's something you just wouldn't see in 2018, and it's super charming in execution.

Alas, I have no idea who at Imagic came up with this.

I was the other vote for Life Force. Yeah, it's a radical giant flaming space dragon, basically. What more do you want?

Chrome plastic space dinos are pretty rad too, though.

Demon Attack is art in it's purest form except for 10 other box art choices that I put ahead of it on my list.

oh okay, yeah that makes sense.

When the list submission time came around, Demon Attack was my insta-number one. Just look at it. It's spray painted dinos with wings taped on in space. They're chrome because it's the future. This is some Ed Wood level special effects going on and it's amazing.

And I'm dang sure that I'm not the only one that makes pshoooo and other various space noises in their head while looking at this cover art. Right? Right?

Demon Attack is the kind of game that would have filled my 2nd through 25th spot on my list had I known about it.

That... is... Amazing.

Imagic did a number of model shots as covers with a slight filter. I think they were trying to ape Atari's vibe.

It's a shame can't vote for them in the next list. But this game is clearly about demons and not dinosaurs. Notice how they completely fit the platonic ideal of a demon: painted silver, rockets shoved up their buttholes, flying through space. Just as Milton described.

EDIT:

I wonder what the story for the game is.

Anyway BEAT will probably cover the artwork, so please enjoy the translucent turquoise cartridge that Life Force Salamander received for its Famicom version:

LET'S LOOK AT
THE OTHER BOXES

#28 - LIFE FORCE

NES - PAL REGIONS
So as far as I can tell, there's really only one ART that's used across all the various Life Force/Salamander Boxes, so if you came here hoping for a bunch of wildly divergent variants, you're gonna be disappointed.

There are still a few things I can point out though! For example, the PAL region NES box had both the names on the box! That's something!

RANKING: RESIDENT EVIL 7: BIOHAZARD/BIOHAZARD 7: RESIDENT EVIL

FAMICOM - JAPAN
So while most of the globe got to see a whole lot of the original image with the snake coiling up in the area above it and the smaller moons down below, Japanese fans just got a zoomed-in view of the snake, which was then covered up further by a big red zero, similar to the ones my elementary school English teachers put on 90% of my graded papers.

RANKING:

EDIT: FAMICOM CARTRIDGE - JAPAN (THX DRACULA)
So this post got NINJA'D by Dracula, and I didn't see this cool cart until after I trashed the Famicom box. And yeah, it is a pretty cool cart! The V design makes sense when it's allowing you to look at the neat computer chips and boards that let our Video games do their video game thing!

RANKING: DOESN'T MAKE ME LIKE THE BOX MORE THO.

PC ENGINE - JAPAN
See now THAT'S how you do a differently-shaped box without cutting out all the cool art! Famicom box, take notes.

RANKING: B+

COMMODORE 64 - NORTH AMERICA
This is actually the first time I've found a Commodore Box that was completely identical to it's NES counterpart. I mean, i'd expect SOME sort of minor differences I could pick up on, but nope, total match! That's almost impressive.

RANKING: ALMOST, BUT NOT QUITE.

COMMODORE 64 - PAL REGIONS
I like how this one places greater focus on the snake's long body by having it go outside the borders, but otherwise-IMAGINE

RANKING: ..THE NAME OF THE GAME

MSX
Putting the PAL Regions and Japan covers side by side makes it weirdly obvious how everything is more zoomed out on the Japanese version of the box. You see more of the art, the Standard MSX and rom cartrige logos all take up less space, even the Konami logo is smaller. If I had to guess as to WHY this is, I'd wager that the Japanese box was physically larger, making everything take up less space. No idea why such a variation in actual packaging would occur.

Also they both feature the "V" seen on the Famicom version, but neither of them feel like they're losing detail to it. Take notes, Famicom box. Take notes.

RANKING: B

SHARP X68000 - JAPAN
I'm pretty sure some of my dad's word processor software came in boxes like this ahhahaha holy shit.

RANKING: DAM.

ZX SPECTRUM
THE HIT SQUAD.

THE HIT SQUAD!

THE
HIT
SQUAD

RANKING:

ULTIMATE BOXED EDITION.
The perfect christmas gift for the gardener in your life.

RANKING: A+++

Honestly even though it's not technically a cover, knowing about the existence of that cartridge may have factored into my vote as well, 'cause damn.

LET'S LOOK AT
THE OTHER BOXES
FOR A PSA ON THE DANGERS OF HUFFING CHROME SPRAYPAINT
#27 - DEMON ATTACK

Like last time, all the boxes for various systems feature the exact same art. UNLIKE last time, there's not really any appreciable difference in how that single piece of art is presented outside the frame surrounding it. And since we all agree that the Demon Attack art of chrome-painted dinosaur toys strapped to rockets IN SPAAAAACE is sick as hell, there's really no point in me doing a post for this box unless you wanted me to talk about the generic-ass box designs for a page and a half! And what kind of monster would want me to suffer through that, Right?! Hahaha

...

Oh god no.

Please no I don't deserve this Why would you even WANT it?! What possible benefit would that get from that?!

You monsters! You absolute monsters!

ALRIGHT FINE DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU

ATARI 2600
As you can see from the North American Box on the left and the Australian box on the right, both boxes for demon attack are shiny, resulting in bad scans and photographs! Also they are dirty, and their prior owners scribbled on them! They were probably salvaged from a landfill by desperate nerds trying to complete their awful collections!

BORDER RANKING: BAD AND DUMB

TI-99/4A

Inside paper Sleeve.

NOT inside paper sleeve.
uicide patrollers and tentacled terrorists from the Demon Armada shower the moon with
stating weaponry. Annhilate them with your laser cannon. Then lift off and destroy the core
of Pandemonium, flagship of the Demon Armada.

RANKING: COMPUTER SOFTWARE

TANDY TRS-80 COLOR COMPUTER
Oh snap, I was wrong when I said they never changed the art, because this art is BACKWARDS! Oh my god I am literally flipping the fuck out with excitement over this incredible discovery!

RANKING: CAT. NO. 26-3099

COMMODORE VIC 20
The fuck is a Vic 20?

RANKING: IMAGIC IS NOT RELATED TO COMMODORE

IBM PC JR
The fuck is a PC "jr".

RANKING: IMAGIC IS NOT RELATED TO IBM.

INTELLIVISION
The fuck is an Intellivision? And is it just me or is this box somehow even shinier than it's Atari 2600 counterpart? I don't think it's just me.

RANKING: IMAGIC IS NOT RELATED TO MATTEL ELECTRONICS INC. OR SEARS.

INTELLIVISION - ALTERNATE BOX?
I was all set to just post the above as the whole thing as is. But a little voice in the back of my brain said Wait BEAT, before you hit submit reply, why don't you take one last look at the Gamefaqs images to see if there's anything you missed. And holy shit, for the first time ever that little voice was actually right! There was exactly ONE other box art for this game! Now I can do what I came here to do and actually judge an actual alternate cover!

Wow it sucks.

I mean even if we forgive the terrible scan quality and try to imagine what it would look like in pristine condition... MAN it sucks.

Just... Man.

Demon Attack and all the discussion and recollections of the cover have always been too kitsch for me but I'm glad it has an audience for its pretty obvious appeal. The rainbow box template would elevate any cover, too.

Imagic's use of chrome for their boxes drew in many a child. Plus the games, for the time, were pretty decent.

All this talk of Smash Bros reminds me that I haven't seen the most important version of the Smash Bros Melee box art:

Every time I want to pick up Melee and try it I look at the prices on Amazon and decide that no, I really don't need to that badly.
