Default Did we seriously not have a thread for AGDQ 2019

Games Done Quick is good

Favorite moment so far: Ecto Tha Daulphin

Favorite behind the scenes bullshit so far: Rwhitegoose getting flayed alive by the internet for being a Fucking Nazi, and Apollo Legend's pathetic attempts at damage control.

We have a general speedrunnning thread.

(No one's posted in it.)

Good runs I' seen so far: Hollow Knight, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, ActRaiser 2, Sotton, Bloodstained, Chip 'n Dale 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 Mix, MMX 1-3 Relay, MM10

I should watch that MM10 run, I could probably pick up a few tips.

From what I've seen, this has been one of my favorite GDQs in recent memory.

More of the enthusiasm of that Sonic 1 run, please

The Hollow Knight run they led with was amazing. Loved it more than the last two runs of it they did. The couch and runner were a lot more lively for it. The MMX Relay was also fantastic for sure, but I haven't been able to catch much more of it than those.

The entire Sonic Block was gold from start* to finish.

*Didn’t actually catch the start of the Sonic block, came in towards the end of Sonic Forces

I watched Majora's Mask and MGS 2 and they were both pretty good! I'm excited to catch up on the rest of it.

For Majora's Mask in particular, it seemed like the runner nailed every single thing he tried. Without knowing what the record was going in, I was starting to get excited about how close he might be to it. Seems pretty rare to have that good of a run at one of these events.

As someone that used to not like ActRaiser 2, and then understood what they were shooting for, I greatly enjoyed seeing someone chew that game up in a run. I'm of the opinion that even if you have to save-state your way through, it's worth it just to see all the cool content and sprite work. (I have beaten it legit, but that dude makes me look like an absolute scrub.)

I love watching fun speed runs, but also I thought this was a good point:

QA did fine, those runners just suck at saying interesting stuff?

Personally I'm more annoyed at "this game is well programmed".

Yes, in fact, it is. Because despite going out of bounds/underflowing your cheese counter/getting total control and doing your graduate thesis in the work RAM you're still able to play/complete the game.

The other thing is that these weird edge cases that don't crash the game can often cause more problems upon removal, so they're left in place if it doesn't prove overly detrimental to the experience.

Are they doing Star Fox 2? I loved the GDQ run of that I saw.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark Speedrunner RWhiteGoose got permaforeverbanned from all GDQs (and presumably from most of polite society) when someone did a little digging on his discord and went "hey wait a second this guy's a full on white nationalist"

Imgur album of stupid shit he said. WARNING: It's like 60 pages of bigoted dipshits talking about how being bigoted dipshits is cool & good.

Apollo Legend, a longtime "GDQ is bad actually" guy who's mostly known for that Billy Mitchel thing from awhile back, responded with a video where he tried to pass the whole thing off as the result of "Some jerk tweeted something & everybody lost their minds and got all ban-happy". In it he tried to make it part of his weird THING where he claims GDQ is this terribly corrupt elite shadow organization that CONSTANTLY BANS PPL FOR NO REASON.

He got quickly taken to task for being a stupid shithead. His attempts at damage control were likewise mocked.

Ah! Tighten up the graphics! I was pretty close anyway.

Yeah, I was joking around. Developers do way too much work for very little pay and armchair commentators usually don't know what they're talking about when it comes to criticizing game development.

It'd kind of amazing that the ad presents QA work as a fantasy where you get to game out with your bros and complain to your nagging work-mommy about how she needs to just fix the graphics.

Have they done TASBot yet? The ones where they completely reprogrammed Super Mario World and Pokemon Red through the controller were particular high points from previous AGDQs

No. I think that's tomorrow. 5:30 mountain time. Might be slightly less intense than the last couple GDQs' TAS blocks.

The ActRaiser 2 run... he demolished that game.
I liked the Aria of Sorrow run where he does it glitchless and then shows you in a few minutes how quickly he can break the game open and beat it again in like a couple minutes with glitches.

I also watched MM, Hollow Knight, SotN. Lots of great runners and couch commenters in my opinion. Looking forward to watching more.

Man, I would love to watch a Hollow Knight run, but I feel like I should go back and beat the game first.

I watched the Another World run and about half of the MGS2 run. Also, I started the Earthworm Jim 2 run, but I realized that I no longer like that game due to the terrible creator and I really didn't enjoy listening to the commentators much, so I stopped.

I've been sick this week, and watching these has been a very fun and relaxing comfort while feeling unwell. Some tremendously impressive displays of skill (CELESTE) and of course some hilarious and fascinating glitches in many of 'em. Got bored and tuned out of today's Diablo 2 run, though...just find the nature of it underwhelming to watch compared to many of the others, though of course that's not the runner's fault, and glad other people seem to be enjoying it.
