Demo came out today. Anyone else try it?

I really liked it a lot. Creepy feel, individual enemies are dangerous and hard to kill, and ammo is hard to come by. Despite the over-the-shoulder viewpoint, you can't play this like you played RE4. Feels a lot like they made RE7 in third person.

I did and really liked what I saw. I'm looking forward to the full game coming out.

Yeah yeah yeah, nevermind all of that.

WHEN YOU EXAMINE SHOTGUN SHELLS, THEY SAY STEEL BOY ON THE BOX

This is the Game of the Year, already. Sorry, other games I was looking forward to. The Steel Boy™ is here.

Also I've played the demo now, and I don't like that the knife can break. I'm sure there's more knives or some way to refill it's durability bar (sharpen it or something), but I always used the knife a ton back in old school RE and it stinks that it's not unlimited.

But that's like LITERALLY my only complaint, everything else is *thumbs up, way up* The reticle-gets-smaller-as-you-aim mechanic is a great way to modernize old school RE gameplay. I kinda wish they had gone with RE4 tank controls, but I don't hold that against the game and totally get why they didn't. I don't like pushing the stick for run either but it's fine and I didn't explore the other control options so whatever.

Overall, super good, weird uncanny valley facial animations aside (that's just the RE7 engine so I've come to expect it).

I haven't played yet, planning to play it tonight, then stream it on another medium probably tomorrow (probably play myself on PS4, stream from my PC).

Also, people have been figuring out how to overcome the time limit, but it can cause Steam to ban you, I guess, because it technically involves hacking. I'm fine with playing the demo then, you know, just playing the full game I already paid $70 for.

So it does actually do the self-destruction gimmick? I wonder how that actually works on consoles. Can't you just redownload it and delete all its game data?

Apparently it connects online to verify if you've played it or not. I suppose you could create a new account, download with that account, and see if you could replay it that way.

Yeah the demo says as much, and it doesn't even let you play it offline either. 30 minutes is not a lot of time!

I'll check out this demo when I'm sure I can focus on it for the whole 30 minutes. I loved Resident Evil 7 so I'm game for RE2's remake being like that but third person.

The demo was pretty sweet. I love little baby Leon. He's adorable. His characterization is very much like a proto-RE4 Leon. It seems very clear this is the same character, just before being forged into the ridiculous heroic figure from later games.

I do kinda wish he would stop swearing so much, though. I mean, yeah, if it was me, I'd be saying "fuck," "Jesus Christ," "shit," etc, as it was all happening, but given that he never says those words in OG RE2 or RE4 or really even RE6 (that I can remember) it just feels off. And the trailer at the end of the demo has Claire yelling "FUCK!" in a way that's just jarring for me.

I mean, I'll get over it, I honestly loved it when Chris told Lucas "if you're gonna kill me, kill me, but for the love of God, shut the fuck up" in the Not a Hero DLC for RE7, but from Baby Leon it just seems so weird.

I distinctly remember several times Leon said "shit" in RE4, it's not entirely out of character for him.

It's also just part of the flavor if 3rd generation of Resident Evil games. Like, RE7 is a much more visceral and... "grounded" game in terms of characters reacting to fucked up shit. It might help to think of Baby Leon and company as a reinterpretation of the RE universe. It's safe to assume most of the same things happened, but maybe not exactly how we know them. If this game does well, I'm betting RE2 isn't the only one that's going to get a remake.

I'm with ShakeWell in preferring a more clean mouthed script for RE2 -- one that would be consistent with, or at least closer to, the original. However I admit this preference didn't strike me clearly until it was brought up.

If it wasn't a remake I wouldn't mind giving the game latitude in establishing new conventions.

My only concern is that it suggest a certain desperation to seem dark and edgy, and that approach taken to the game as a whole could get obnoxious. I'm especially worried that an urge to be dark and edgy and seem all mature could prompt them to lean in hard and go all in with the creepy grossness of Chief Irons, and that could make for unfortunate times.

Resident Evil had been moving closer and closer to being a sailor mouthed series ever since RE4 regularly let Leon regularly say "shit" so I'm not even surprised that he and Claire are dropping F-bombs in a post-RE7 remake of their debut game. The original game kept the dialogue a soft PG, but dialogue in M-rated games has become more M-rated ever since like 2004 or so.

What's in the demo regarding the Chief seems considerably less bad than what was in the original game, but time will tell.

Yeah, it plays if you run out of time or get back to Marvin before the clock runs out. If the latter you can start it over again and explore with the extra time.

Just finished the demo; I liked it a lot. I've got to say though, I thought Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a li'l too gruesome and this game's all like "Hold my beer" in comparison. Now that I see Mortal Kombat X-esque gore like a dead guy's gruesomely torn-up face and the guy who gets torn in half in front of you, I actually kinda miss the PS1 era cartoonish abstraction of model parts falling off toy zombies.

Still, I really liked what I played of this demo while it lasted. Here's some animated GIFs from my 30 minutes.

I love Marvin, and I'm sad he has been bitten to hell and back by the time we meet him.

He's like the Zero to Leon's Mega Man X. One day, if Leon tries real hard, he'll be as cool as Marvin.

Yeah, this looks to use the RE7 ammo crafting system.

So I realized that the Tofu character is some kind of food/zombie joke because tofu is not meat at all so why would zombies even want to chomp on a block of tofu. I don't know how I missed all these stupid jokes in this game for so long, but the remake finally showed me the light.
