I get why they went for a MonHun-like, but in my imagination Final Fantasy XV with multiplayer would've basically been GTA Online with fishing and chocobos and monsters I mean besides the griefers and warp strike races.

You have NO IDEA how much I DESPERATELY want rally-type ATV multiplayer races now.

Though I suppose all the "fun" pastimes you also mentioned wouldn't quite fit in the dreary, daemon-filled, apocalyptic world of Comrades, huh :/

Yeah, it'll never happen 'cuz Square Enix (and especially Final Fantasy) is way too obsessed with shoehorning a story mode into places where it's not really necessary. Like, just make it an alternate reality with zero relevance to the main plot! Non-canon is fun-canon!

There's ten years' worth of dreams that Noct must have had to mature and elevate him from a regular 20yo JRPG hero to a mid-30s king.

I insist that ATV racing was one of such dreams.

I don't think it matters, but that's the order I'd play them in. Can't imagine going back to Gladio after playing Ignis.

dang, that was p sweet.

Two things tho.
1. I want this to be awesome (because it looks cool and I'm already invested this far, for god's sake).
2. I want them to keep to their word and not release anymore FFXV content after this. Please.

*extremely Nintendo Direct host voice* Oh, and one more thing:
In April, what appears to be a novelization of the cancelled DLC will be released.

I want them to keep releasing FFXV forever until it is the only video game that exists. Like some kind of eldritch abomination consuming all video gamedom.

Seriously, though, while I love FFXV, I hope Square has learned their lesson and stop biting off more than they can chew.

or just make more front mission

I wonder when people will realize that killing off the only female character in a narrative to provide motivation for a man is boring as hell

Honestly, the OAV didn't tell me anything I didn't already suspect. It was basically just confirmation that the First King was a bigger dick than I thought.

OTOH...

Yeah, it's a trite and annoying plot device, and culturally stagnant.

This is why my head canon diverges right before you go to Altissia.

Luna: "You know, I've been traveling the land, risking my life and freedom, healing people and spreading hope. I've made covenants with all the Astrals, I carry the ring that connects this world with the Crystal and Lucii, and I'm pretty handy with a trident. Why can't I succeed the throne as Queen?"

Gentiana: "Because reasons."

Luna: "That's bullshit."

Gentiana: "They are our reasons."

Luna: "Well, fuck your reasons!"

Gentiana: "..."

Gentiana: "..."

The Glacian: "My Queen, you have no idea how many centuries I've waited to hear those words."

Luna: "Damn right."

Shame it's just a novel and not, like, a text adventure. In my opinion, Final Fantasy works best the closer it sticks to gaming, and even if interactive fiction is one of the loosest definitions of "game" around it would still win a lot of points from people who want more stuff like Radical Dreamers and those bits in the NieR games.

They're also easy to keep low budget, too.

Oh yes, definitely. While it's neat to see some of the epic stuff Square Enix comes up with, they really need to do better job of reining things in, particularly when it comes to the numbered installments. They've been trying to rebottle the genie that was Final Fantasy VII's success for decades (right down to currently working on REMAKING FF7 ITSELF), but I just don't see that ever really happening.

Final Fantasy VII was a great game that had the fortune to be in the right place at the right time.

We'll always have Left Alive. Really hoping this one's good for more reasons than "Has the Metal Gear artist."

In a medium where the vast majority of narratives up to that point boiled down to "save the princess!" - FF7 was honestly long overdue and decided to instead tell the story of, "Wait, what if you failed to save the princess?" I'd argue FF7 (and FFXV) does some pretty interesting things within the space of, "How do you cope with loss?" beyond simply just feeling man-pain and wanting revenge. But most of the time, inflicting violence on female characters in games (and media in general) is simply just for man-pain and pretty sketch.

And this is where I really, really enjoyed FF8, 10, 12, and 13's stories. Because all of them are varying levels of a repudiation of FF7's man-pain story. FF8 and 10 would rather tell conventional loves stories, and while there are definitely save-the-princess-moments, there is a strong two-way dynamic where the main leads emotionally support each other in a healthy way rather than just be a one-sided thing. X-2 flips things around and lets Yuna go save the prince. And 12 & 13 both feature strong women who don't need no stinkin' man.
