Hah, I'm considering doing the exact same. I could instead stay at work late to watch it all, but it's followed immediately by TAS block and I don't want to miss any of that.

OK I only caught like the last 20 minutes of it, but that Vice City run was great.

I agree on the TAS block, even the scribblenauts with the robot stylus was boring. The novelty of just seeing a TAS live is gone for me. I’m only excited if they’re hacking a game inside another game, like they did with Mario All-Stars a while back.

As someone who's long studied the BAD WORLD, the shit bigots talk to other bigots about is never GOOD but it can be CAPTIVATINGLY STUPID sometimes.

Of course it's also always really disgustingly racist sexist homophobic transphobic etc.

But sometimes captivatingly stupid

TASBlock is OVER!

But seriously, TASes seem to be a very important component of speed running so I think they should have a place at what is (probably) the premiere speed running event, but I think it's time to move them to a slightly less prestigious slot in the schedule.

Without the excitement of a live run, TASes are basically reliant on seeing a familiar game broken or spectacle like reprogramming a game on the fly to generate interest. Playing a rom hack no one's ever seen is not fun for TASBlock. Without a baseline, how can we be impressed by the run? Scribblenauts was also a misfire.

On the other hand, they made $40k during the TASblock alone so they probably put it where it is because it's at night after people get home for work on a day when they most likely just got paid and can afford to donate to GDQ.

The MMX relay was pretty great too. People have said the Trauma Center one is great but I haven't yet gotten too far into it. The Sonic Forces and Mania runs are both really awesome too.

I don't have any idea what was going on but Dr. Fatbody's run of Sonic was high-energy entertainment.

Virtual Hydlide is a terrible game but the runner and his couch were having a lot of fun with it.

TASblock was interesting but I think the presentation was a bit poor or maybe the concept is overplayed at this point because I wasn't nearly as entertained as in past years despite all the work those guys put in.

i really enjoyed seeing the MMX1-3 relay for the most part. Being very familiar with those games, but not particularly good at them, it was fun to see them completely destroyed. That being said, there were a couple moments when the runners laughed or talked, but nobody in there was mic'd and the commenters didn't acknowledge it at all.

As a comparison. Sonic 1 with Dr. Fatbody was a game that I only sort of know, but the commentary from the runner and couch was infectious and fun to watch.

I liked the SMB1 part of TAS, and the Aria of Sorrow part. The extra SMB levels were eh, and Scribblenauts was honestly a disaster, though.

The Celeste run was stellar.

Super Metroid was really good this year, too.

I'll second Sonic 1, might be my favorite run I've seen of the marathon so far.

the sonic 1 was very wholesome and it was refreshing to see one of these where the runner was just like effortlessly chatting away while they played

Well yes, yes it was. I feel for the poor souls who bought that unsuspectingly back in the day though!

Dr Fatbody was excellent, and did some crazy stuff. That's exactly what I watch AGDQ for.

Yyyyyeah...

In the game's defense, though, it looks quite a bit better in EGA. Not good, but also not CGA.

I might have been one of those sad individuals. It might have gotten returned very quickly. Along with that awful port of Street Fighter II. I mean, look at this junk:

I got the DOS port of Street Fighter 1 for like five bucks at a grocery store in the mid-'90s because it had pictures of the arcade version on the back of the box. Holy catfish, what a lie.

Urban Yeti was the peak of the awful block imo, if only because it introduced me to this song:
