Default The Short List: Romantic Comedies

No particular order:

1. Sixteen Candles
2. His Girl Friday
3. Breakfast at Tiffany's
4. Groundhog Day
5. Desk Set How to Marry a Millionaire

Desk Set is a better movie but How to Marry a Millionaire has the better laughs.

The Taming of the Shrew is always a good one, and Liz Taylor blew the roof off her version IMO

Speaking of adaptations of The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You is honestly a pretty good rom-com with a surprisingly nuanced portrayal of teenage feminism.

Seconding this. When my girlfriend made me watch it I was expecting another eye rolling teenager movie but it was Pretty Good.

I want to say My Man Godfrey, but I love it only for the maid and not the central romance, so I'll have to think about this some more.

I'd consider that one more of a screwball comedy (and maybe the best screwball comedy.)

Saw this in the theaters as a teenager and clearly remember this as the first time I noticed a movie's bloated runtime. You've Got Mail runs two hours, and should have been 90 minutes max.

True, though there's a lot of overlap with the two genres. Godfrey is one step past His Girl Friday, which fits neatly into both.

Yeah, I ponder the same genre distinction with Some Like It Hot.

I think His Girl Friday functions as the border between the genres. Any mushier and it's full romcom, any goofier and you're in screwball territory.

I realize asking for other movies like The Lobster is probably a tall order, but I'd love to know about other romantic dark comedies out there. Plenty of romantic comedies (too many), and plenty of dark comedies (not enough), but precious few movies I know of attempt to do both.

I think Punch Drunk Love is a dark rom-com. Somewhat light on the "dark" but it's there.

Definitely Punch Drunk Love. I'd also put Rushmore up there, though it ends on a happy note.

Romcoms are a funny genre, because there's thousands of them, yet only a scant handful of that number are actually any good, let alone memorable.

And yet, the only two I care to name are Better Off Dead (simply for the recurring delivery boy gag and the living dinner bit) and There's Something About Mary (as a Minnesotan by upbringing, any Brett Farve jokes are low fruit for me).

I think rom coms get a bad rap, especially because comedies in general are usually high volume/low budget and not exactly made for the long tail audience.

e: My God, just look at Seann William Scott's filmography. I was in the target audience for his work and most of these titles are still totally unknown to me.

Sixteen Candles skeeved me out back when I used to visit 4chan; god knows how I'd feel about it now.

I need to see if Romancing the Stone holds up.

I don’t believe for a minute that you weren’t first in line to see a series of films about a guy who fucks pies.

Rewatching Punch Drunk Love, and it's wild to think about how when I first saw it, I conceptually and intuitively understood what anxiety was, yet somewhow hadn't grasped how much of prime mover it was in my life. Yet watching it doesn't cause me anxiety, no matter how tightly wound it is. Maybe it's on account of the overriding catharsis of, "finally, something that understands!"

Also, "He Needs Me" and the bedroom scene is one of the GOAT cinematic couplets.

EDIT: Of course, Barry's damage runs a lot deeper. But the movie presents a world where every anxiety about social interaction is made manifest.

Pretty sure you could weasel in Can't Hardly Wait into the romantic comedy genre.

Also:

Pretty In Pink
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

50 First Dates
Roxanne
Chasing Amy
High Fidelity

Maybe a romantic comedy?:

About A Boy
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (if you squint hard enough)
40-Year-Old Virgin
The Quiet Man
