Is this bartender flirting with Nate? I think so.

The exhaustive summary on uncannyxmen.net forwards no interpretation.

(Marita is by far my fave... I will miss her)

I don't have anything to add, but I am enjoying the X-Man commentary and screen grabs.

----

On an unrelated note, the editor for the X-books did an informal character popularity poll on twitter:

Wow, correct that X-Man is exactly as good as Mystique and Mister Sinister but they are all shamefully undervalued by the voters.

Lots of characters I love with only one vote, but I must also protest Daken’s unpopularity. Hmm... Chamber is the worst Gen X kid. Skin is the best and also, lowkey the gay one... doesn’t even place. X-Fans... do better....

I’m pleased that Fantomex got 8 votes, which exceeds my expectations that I have just formed. (I’m not sure if Maggot’s placement meets my expectations or what. I guess I’m surprised he beat Marrow, but they’re both the best)

Who’s the most obscure character who placed, IYO? I wanna say either Mudbug or Spitball. I’ve read stories with both but don’t remember them. Mudbug’s appeared more, and more recently, but Spitball’s from mid-first run Claremont. I’m not sure who Geldoff is. I guess... someone from Ultimate Spider-Man? I probably read that, too, long ago but don’t remember him.

Was Namor in the X-Men? Spider-Man??
Rahne deserved better, like, just in general really.

Yeah, he’s been x-affiliated and mutant-branded for years and is currently on Jean Grey’s team. (one of the earliest silver age x-stories involved Magneto and Xavier vying for his loyalty, but he wouldn’t be heavily associated with the mutants for decades)

I wasn’t even paying attention to the top of the list because I assumed I wouldn’t care, but: I did. It’s good that Cyclops the good X-Man took the top spot. Good poll IMO. Of course, he’s not my favorite, but in what universe would my favorite win? (don’t know who my favorite is)

Cyclops gets #1? I question the electoral system.

Spider-Man briefly lead a team of reject students from Wolverine and the X-Men during the period after that book was cancelled because he died but before Secret Wars, in a short lived Spider-Man and the X-Men series by former Daily Show head writer and Flop House Podcast host Elliott Kalan.

It's where this lovely panel now in eternal meme rotation came from:

Huuuh.

Cyclops is not my favorite X-Men by a mile, but I think he's one of the most interesting when used correctly.

It probably doesn't help her popularity much that at this point in time she's probably just as well known or maybe even more well known for being on those Peter David X-Factor runs than for her time on the New Mutants, and both times PAD's role for her was, "unhealthily obsessed with the protagonist" (first Havok, then Multiple Man).

Wow, how did Nightcrawler get the second spot? I have nothing against him, but he always seemed second-tier to me, at best.

He is inoffensive, prominent, but not overexposed, and sometimes the hottest x-man. He is involved in some notoriously shitty stories, (the Draco? something involving communion wafers?) which I haven’t read, but I think in those cases it’s more the plot that’s awful than his behavior. (again, haven’t read) Can’t really think of a reason (good or bad) to Stand Against Kurt, like you might be inclined to with Cyclops or Wolverine. (if you’ve got one, great)

I have a vague memory of him being mean to a Marauder, for being a clone, in an X-Men Unlimited story from ye olden fifteen to seventeen years ago, when he was a bit too Catholic. Fucked up, Kurt, if my memory holds. (probably not)

Kurt's blessed with a fantastic Dave Cockrum design; has always had to actively think about passing as human which roots him to the overarching themes of X-Men even in the earliest days when those were largely nominal; he's uniquely positioned to propel swashbuckly derring-do stories with panache; he's a very sexual and fun character in a way that writers mostly do well with where he doesn't cross personal boundaries, respects others and isn't a creep (someone like Gambit isn't as fortunate); his relationships with people like Kitty and Logan are some of the most storied and developed in the series, and really enrich all involved narratively; his powerset is flashy but distinctly limited, so there's always a good hook to write setpieces around him; and mainly he's just a very enduring character who was a central figure for the X-Men during its most intimately and long-formly plotted formative period, and then came to occupy much the same role for Excalibur. X-Men has many characters that people relate intensely to, and Nightcrawler is way near the top in those terms. That aspect is probably best embodied in a reader letter from Uncanny X-Men #149, 1981.

Lists are silly, but still: rest in peace, Boom-Boom.

Good thing every single character in the top 4 has spent extended periods of time dead fairly recently.

For some reason comic publishers thought it made more sense to kill off popular characters and bring them back to hype events than to kill off unpopular characters to make room for new ones

Why do they have to kill off characters because they’re unpopular? They can just not publish books about them!

But they should. My tastes should be catered to extensively.

Default On the other hand, Lockheed only got one vote, and that’s a travesty

Four people voted for Beak!

Beak outperformed Deadpool!

Come to think of it, are Old Cyke and Young Cyke still contemporary in the current comics? I stopped following modern X-Men because of the mess of Battle of the Atom, but I heard rumblings about Young Cyke taking off into space with his dad and the Starjammers while Old Cyke got killed by God Emperor Doom in Secret Wars (comics, everybody!) Is that still the case? Could the #1 spot be for Young Cyke instead of the concept of "Cyclops"?

Well, no. Probably not! Thought the young characters probably aren’t hurting anyone’s ranking and most people probably don’t strongly distinguish between them and their older counterparts.

But yes, young Cyke is still here... for a few months, probably, until the time traveling X-Men plot is “cleaned up” in a current miniseries.

Old Cyclops died after Secret Wars. Young Cyclops hasn’t been living in space for years but he did just visit for some Venom nonsense.

Nate Grey is happening, but he doesn’t seem to get a haircut during the big event. Complex feelings.

With the introduction of Extreme Teen Cable filling the role of a clean cut young Nathan, I imagine Nate Grey will stay in that Messiah Shaman niche for the near future.

Cannonball without Sunspot tagging along seems like an odd choice.
