Heís a waterboy. Tide-us, not Teat-us. I donít care about the kana! But wait, they say itís Tida? Then thatís what it shouldíve been in Kingdom Hearts. Commit to the bit. (of giving him a terrible name)

Is that truly how you were all pronouncing his name when it was never spoken? Wow. Astonishing. Discrediting.

There's been at least one game when it was said out loud. But I always pronounced it Tide-us before that, and continue to do so. I always thought it was pronounced that way to go along with the very heavy aqua motif of FFX.

Since my native language is portuguese, this is the natural way to read it.

Tidus is cute. Tie-dus? Oh well.

It is generally my position that all words should be pronounced as if they were Portuguese... so... point to you...

Still, I will maintain this one exception. Personally, Tide-us is a clearer fit for English both because FFX is a a very watery game and it looks like a tide-based name and we have a name, Titus, pronounced Like That.

Tidus ain't pronounced at all. He's just that guy whose name you can change, 'cuz Square initially did not get how incredibly ridiculous it would be to have a main character in a nigh fully voice-acted jRPG who is never referred to by name.

But seriously though it's the ridiculous one. Because Tee-deuce is a pretty ridiculous character.

This is my position. Whatever the original meaning behind his name in japanese Tide-us sounds better to the English ear and even seems more thematically appropriate for the game as a result. Isn't that the whole point of localization?

But... But... Tie-dus sounds happy and strong! Tea-dus has daddy issues! He's a sad boy inside!

In my opinion, this difference in pronunciation explains the lack of popularity of Tidus! That must be it!!!

Oh, I love that pronunciation. I would allow Square Enix to patch it into all past Kingdom Hearts releases.... they have my permission.

I guess? I don't know how 'cheat-us' sounds like to compare the pronunciations.

I recorded with my own voice the proper way to pronounce it!! You all can thank me later!! It is here!!!

listen, if SE is going to make a character whose name is basically a name that already exists in my language, I'm basically going to pronounce it like that name c.f. Titus

It sounds really weird the first time you hear it, but you get used to it after a while pretty quick and it becomes second nature.

And ya, there's a lot of humdingers in the franchise like that. Like Score Leonheart, and I'll never forgive SE for Cidney/Cindy.

Here's a good one. How do you pronounce "Seifer"?? I always pronounced it "See-fer" but should be more like "Cypher"

When I was a kid, Sea-fer. Now I would say Sigh-fer, possibly because I took German in high school but maybe not. I donít think either is that weird in English, whereas Teatus is very weird.

Also why would you want your video game protagonist to remind you of the word "tedious"?

Say-fur, 'cuz I figure it's one of those Japanese pronounciations like Rei (Ray) and Seiken (Say-ken).

Used to default to "Cypher" though.
