Default Wargroove: wholesome fantasy wars

We don't have a thread for this? I'm feeling the need to keep info in one place, so let's have one.

Trailer:

Developer 1v1 Match:

It's an indie developer's take on a fantasy-Advance Wars. Expect turn based strategy with purchasable, expendable units and capture points. But now it's involving knights, dragons, harpies and trebuchets. The game is planned to release this year on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Some interesting notes:

-Your armies have unique "heroes" (called commanders) represented as powerful infantry units on the field. In the developer gameplay demo, they show a commander taking out the enemy's basic infantry unit in one blow, but they warn you have to be mindful of power units like trebuchets and dragons wiping out your commanders. Commanders appear to be able to spend a turn to heal themselves (reminds me of Warsong/Langrisser).

-There are 4 factions. Each faction has their units named and drawn to fit the faction theme, but I'm guessing they behave identically across factions. Each faction has a unique campaign.

-There will be local and online multiplayer (competitive and co-op)

-It will have a map editor and campaign editor, with the ability to add conditional side missions.

I'm very much looking forward to this.

Between this and Warbits it's nice to have a resurgence of Advance Wars Games. Of a fashion.

Friday!

Reviews are glowing, so I'm more or less sold. I love asynchronous multiplayer and wish more games used it. I also like that there's a difficulty slider for the single player, though apparently it can affect what endings you can get?

I'm a bit torn on who to play as, though. On one hand, I love that they put the plant race from Starbound in the game. On the other hand, a dog.

How big a role does custom content play here? I'm in for a good old-fashioned story campaign, random unconnected levels don't interest me much.

The editor is a campaign editor, letting you put together whole stories and everything. They've had information about early versions on their development blog. I'm pretty sure the official campaign doesn't use any features not in the campaign editor, but I don't recall why I believe that.

Reviews mention that the developers actually used the campaign editor to create the main campaign.

If I remember correctly, said campaign has thirty missions.

I'm getting a sense based on Kat's review over at USG that the campaign is generally harder than AW ever thought about being. It does give me a bit of pause; getting it anyway, though.

As someone who has yet to defeat Sturm in AW1, I sincerely doubt this

Also, there's apparently a really granular difficulty slider, so even if it is harder than AW, you can solve that problem through chicanery!

IIRC Advanced Campaign in Advance Wars is almost literally a puzzle from the first mission, with a specific solution rather than a strategy for each mission that any deviation from results in a loss?

As someone who only recently unlocked the Advance Campaign after playing Advance Wars 1 on and off for a decade, can confirm.

I'm playing this! I really love all the little touches, like units having randomly-chosen skin tones, but it's so close to Advance Wars that the ways that the interface deviates keep tripping me up. There's some QOL stuff in Advance Wars that they absolutely should have stolen.

Also, I really just wanna play as Blue Moon Felheim instead of the generic boring good guy army. Sigrid and Ragna so good.

Yeah, right?

I keep getting thrown off by things like needing to actually FIGHT to capture territories and not being able to keep enemy ranges on the screen a-la Fire Emblem.

ALso, kind of wish that you could speed up movement speed.

It's kind of surprising that they didn't go with the medieval robots instead.

Caesar doesn’t count as a dog when triggering the Battlepup critical hit.

I choose to believe that this is because the developers understood the difference between Doggo and Pupper

Ragna is an angry frankenstein who loves to fight and hates to lose. The level of charm in this game is exceeding my already high expectations.

Plant-race lady's Teleport Beam seems pretty darn powerful, since you can use the unit you summon on that same turn.

Is there a cheat sheet for the Effective/Vulnerable icons? I can't keep all these units straight.

Especially because the portraits all look kind of similar, even if the sprites look different.

That and the inability to adjust the walking speed are my only knocks against the game.

What's especially annoying is they made icons for each unit type which would make it easier to learn, rather than the very similar-looking portraits that change with each faction. I wish you could toggle them.

Incidentally, what I hear about the ranking system is that it's based entirely on speed, not efficiency - it doesn't matter how many units you lose or how many you defeat, only how many turns you take.

I really appreciate that ranks A and S both give you the full three stars. It it helping me to live with imperfection.

A QOL patch is already underway, and will be out “as quickly as possible”, which includes the option to speed up battle animations and movement speed, as well as making Unit effectiveness clearer.

That’s basically all my complaints addressed in one patch.

The devs are also looking for feedback as to whether they should ease up on penalizing players for making the game easier. Which yeah, I think they should.

If they really want to "brand" people who play the game on any degree of Easy, then put a marker on the save file, make the stars a different colour, something else. But don't punish people for making use of the impressively granular difficulty settings you put in the game.

I haven't done so yet, but I suspect I'll disable voices the same way I do in the Fire Emblem games. "Mood" voices that don't match the actual dialogue as written are just kind of annoying.
