Sounds like you did well. "Talk about it" is the first, last and best advice for problems at the table.

Signed. Sometimes people just need to be heard.

I will say that FATE combat is dogshit if what you want is a nice tactical battle. 4e ruined me for all other hack and slash games.

Does anyone have any experience selling stuff on the BGG marketplace? I have a bunch of games going entirely unplayed that I might as well liquidate. Need to clear up space on the shelves for new games I'll never get to play, right?

I guess my biggest concerns are not getting scammed and being able to set reasonable prices for stuff, both things that are still available in stores and things that aren't.

Couldn't help you with setting reasonable prices. As far as scams, I've never had any trouble. You can see their marketplace rating before you transact. My experience is that you run into a bunch of really reasonable people; BGG isn't high-profile like eBay.

Fact 1: We played Paris Connection several times this weekend and kept saying, “this would be better if setup were faster.”
Fact 2: I needed to practice front-end web dev stuff.

Result: https://pence.github.io/sncf/

The name is a pun.

HAHA FUCKTRUCKS I ACTUALLY GOT A STRIKE RPG GAME OFF THE GROUND

...Ahem.

So last night I managed to get a game running at the board game store using Strike RPG and a setting of my own design. I would love to go on about the details here, but jenkitchen might read this, so I have to only give info that the players would have.

The setting is high fantasy, where almost everyone can use magic. There's four fields of magic, drawing power from the Earth, Moon, Sun and Stars. The PCs have all but Moon represented on their team, with one nonmagical character among them. Importantly: these fields are asymmetric in capabilities: Earth magic is the most accessible and common, Moon magic requires silver to work (which you require a license to carry), Sun magic is highly dangerous to use without proper equipment, and Star magic is the most esoteric, usually requiring you to track down proper star charts akin to classical D&D wizard scrolls.

The story so far is that they've been working with the continent-spanning Silverclaw Company for some time on designing a prototype sailing ship that could travel across the ocean to the distant continent of Qingyue, but just before they're about to embark, the ship is mysteriously destroyed and frozen in time, and the Silverclaw Company is holding the players responsible and has a warrant out for their arrest. They managed to fight their way out and are now hiding out in the docks of Observania, planning how to flee this unjust suspicion.

I was really not expecting to run the session yesterday, but as it would happen, I got an entirely new player out of the blue interested in playing! And both newbies to the system handled it pretty well, all told. We didn't get much out of combat stuff done, but I expect we'll dig into that a lot more next session.

I guess this is where this news would go?

Anyway. Out of the blue, my mother sent me a package of Peasant Buffet cards. I guess she thought I'd like the artwork... and I do, but I'm not sure what else I'll do with these. Apparently this was a Kickstarter-funded project? As a game, how well does it work?

As a lot of role players know, Crown Royal sacks make for nice dice bags. But...

Did you know you can order a sack and get it personalized for fairly cheap?

GenCon's about to start up! Who's excited? Who's going!?

Not me. I couldn't afford the extra plane ticket I would need to bring home all my new RPGs, so I can't make it =(

Aaand the Wrath & Glory preorder closed today so I'm too late to get in on that too. Oh well, not like I can't get it cheaper in a few months from CoolStuff anyway, but it's the principle of the thing....

Return to Dark Tower would be the sixth game from Restoration Games. Fireball Island got more attention than the 2017 Essen games since it went through Kickstarter.

Published:
  • Stop, Thief!
  • Indulgence (restored from Dragonmaster)
  • Downforce (restored from several Wolfgang Kramer-designed racing games including Top Race)

Not yet published:
  • Dinosaur Tea Party (restored from an old Parker Brothers game called Whosit?)
  • Fireball Island: The Curse of Val-Kar (restored from Fireball Island)
  • Return to Dark Tower (restored from Dark Tower)

So anyone following the whole White Wolf/Vampire fiasco, because yikes!

From the sound of things, Onyx Path will likely be resuming/continuing their stewardship over the World of Darkness line, which is probably for the best.

There's some really fantastic historical revisionism in the statements in that article. Paradox had previously been very clear that the goal with White Wolf was to launch a multimedia line developed and published in house that was competitive with D&D - regular high quality supplements, organised play campaigns, big livestreamed events, and the like. The fact that they had zero expertise to execute such a strategy was pointed out to them multiple times by a variety of hobby professionals, so it's not like no-one saw this coming.

Anyone interested in free misprinted copy of 13th Age Glorantha? Perfectly good if you're not interested in playing a Troll Warrior or Wind Lord, or in learning how to do encounter design.

Introduced my DnD group to Betrayal at House on the Hill with Betrayal Legacy.

We played through the Introduction, then immediately did the first the first mission. It's great! We're hooked!

I did not consider that we may have fewer actual DnD sessions. Or that I may want to play Betrayal more than I do our current campaign.

Evil Hat's dumping a ton of inventory for tax purposes. It's really a shame, as pretty much all of these games are fantastic. Some outstanding ones are:

Zeppelin Attack - A creative combat deckbuilder that's oriented around scoring instead of obliterating your enemy's life total.

Atomic Robo RPG - Atomic Robo may not be your cup of tea. But this RPG has a lot of fantastic system ideas, many of which are applicable to any game, including a super-science brainstorming system that has the players competing to make up the correct explanation for the convoluted bullshit you've just thrown at them.

Oh man, I haven't thought of Zeppelin Attack in years. Played a lot of it way back when, when I had a couple of CCGs and a small handful of small card games. Maybe I'll pick up a second copy; I'm not sure I have the expansion.

The expansion is interesting; it makes games longer and drives scores up by adding another pile of Zeppelins. But the new Zeppelins have a variety of interesting effects. And IIRC it includes atomic weapon / defense.

Speaking of big sales, Coolstuff is doing 10% off everything right now. A shame I was already planning to spend my leisure moneys elsewhere this month....
