It was kinda funny to Yellow Submarine, but who could afford it?

(What season was that in, I am too lazy to look it up)

I'm kicking myself now for not packing up the dvd sets to bring with me when I just visited home last week.

Although, I did bring along the first season of 30 Rock, which helps just a bit.

For some reason "Also, that House of Pies went out of business" is one of my favorite lines from the entire series.

Also, the Family Guy promo/pop-up ad gag is one of the most genius jokes in television history.

I said this in the Not Worth It's Own Thread thread, but I'll repeat it here.

"I thought you won that car on Card Sharks" made me laugh for ten minutes. Anyone who drops in a game show reference like that is almost assuredly guaranteed to get that much laughter from me. Totally not expecting that.

And then in the deleted scenes, with the follow up about the Fiero and $ale of the Century? A whole new wave of laughter.

What a great show.

I have begun watching the series again from the beginning. It is amazing how it never stops being funny.

And some of the details are fantastic. In the episode where Lindsay gets Tobias' acting job, in just about every single scene of him crying in the shower you can see him wearing denim bottoms. This is the 2nd episode of the series, and it's like a half-dozen before they actually explain why that is. Absolutely brilliant.

Anyone who hasn't spent a bunch of time reading through the Balboa Observer-Picayune really should. The number of hidden jokes and background details in every episode is just spectacular.

I wish this was streaming on Netflix. I own the whole series on DVD, but I'm missing two disks somehow. I can't just skip episodes!

Oh yay a movie

Quote:
It's been a good long while since we've heard anything concrete about the status of that hotly desired "Arrested Development" feature film. But today we finally got some new info from the most unlikely of places: Michael Cera.

The youngest member of the Bluth brood (initially the lone hold out) was chatting with Moviefone about his new movie "Youth in Revolt," when talk expectably turned towards the big-screen project.

"There is no script yet," he said when pressed for details. "I don't think they know when they're going to shoot because ... it all depends on that." So bad news up front, no doubt. But the fact Cera even knows the status means he's gotten over whatever was preventing him from saying "I am George Michael ... not the singer/songwriter though" once again, right? Maybe.

Although he never came out with, "I can't wait to slip back into those chinos," Michael did say, "It's just really cool because I love being around those people. I love Mitch Hurwitz and I think he is going to direct it. He is someone who means a lot to me. He's just a really big inspiration to me. I am really looking forward to working with him as a director. Also, all those people are really good people. I am excited to get to be around them all at once."

So if and when the "Arrested Development" movie comes to life, it sounds like Michael Cera will definitely be having a fun and sexy time with everyone else!
Wait, this doesn't sound all that assured, fuck.

One of my favorite little details was somewhere in Season 2, where the company's housing order was cut from 22 to 18 - because it's a reference to how FOX cut the order for episodes in the 2nd season from 22 to 18.

Save Our Bluths is possible my favorite episode of anything ever. Making fun of every single save the show illusion like 3d bits, the death of a character, the cavalcade of guest stars while using them is great. But even better is George Sr.'s line "The Home Builders Organization is not going to want us, I guess its Showtime" about the rumors of the show being saved by one of those two networks is so funny it hurts. Actually it hurts because it is the last gasp of a dying show acknowledging its death before it gives up and ends.

And something less sad: Steve Holt is a bastard.

My only complaint about Save Our Bluths is that I fear people coming to the show later won't be as into a few of the jokes, like the aforementioned Home Builders Organization joke. There was something magical about watching the show die in real time that DVD will never quite capture.

I think the best parts are just Michael's reactions to the outlandish things his family says. Like: "I seem to have shot my wad on what was supposed to be a dry run and now I have something of a mess on my hands." prompts the suggestion that Tobias should carry a taperecorder with him. Jason Bateman is a great straight man.

The ultimate example of this is Buster losing his hand. The hand chair and the stuffed seal were obviously written into the show as pay-off for that joke, but they melded into the episodes that introduced them so completely that you never would've guessed. "LOOSE SEAL! LOOSE SEAL!" had me in stitches for like, an hour.

Mr. F was actually the first time I caught the show (right when they were moving it around every other week) and I kind of liked it, but didn't love the show until I was able to plow through the whole thing on DVD over the course of like a couple months. The Mr. F episodes also have a lot of cute visual clues about who the mysterious Mr. F is, which don't pay off until a second or third viewing (where you might actually notice them). I love that the show is just packed with details like that.

But I thought about those episodes at work today, for some reason, and even the very thought of that voiceover saying MISTER F made me laugh.

I first watched this years ago, and this is reminding me that:

1. I need to rewatch it

2. I never did actually watch season 3

I should get on that!

I have an uncomfortable relationship with this show, because it's hilarious right up until the Bluths start interacting with the general public. Like when Tobias decides he's going to direct the school play, I just cringe, but when it's the Bluths at home it's goddamn hilarious.

This is the best show ever. Taken as a whole, The Office (UK) is probably tighter and better plotted, but AD is two and a half seasons of funniest, most layered comedy ever to grace television. I have seen every episode more times than I care to mention and, every now and again, I still notice things I've missed. Pure gold.

Bumpy road ahead.
