It's an unreal tug-of-war, that most recently lead them to spending millions upon millions of dollars on carefully creating the theme-park version of Pandora, the setting of that movie you vaguely remember as having tall blue cats.

In 2017.
The Avatar theme park and the story behind it are both buckwild.

Anyway, even though I'm usually all "grr grr Disney buying everything" and "grr grr streaming services" I'm glad that a bunch of movies that have never really gotten any sort of archival treatment will now be out there in Blu-Ray quality.

if only there were some kind of overarching service bundle that you could pay for, and you could choose packages of what streaming services you wished to subscribe to...

I don't care about ethics because a) I am a games journalist and b) I will soon enough be in the cold cold ground and I want to go out smiling and wearing one of those Goofy hats

I think they said that they actually intend to put most of their content on the service within the first couple months. (Presumably the very start will be more focused on things like load balancing, etc.) I think that's a good strategy to have if one of their goals is to monetize what would otherwise be potential piracy, because I think the easiest way to combat it among most people is to increase availability.

The Disney vault was interesting because it was (yet another) Terrible Eisner Idea that paired weirdly with the glut of excruciating and bland sequels probably written by the people who gave us that weird and awful confederacy cosplay episode of duck tales -- restrict access to the actually good content so it retains value, and give us all this crap we wouldn't actually want instead. That sort of artificial scarcity plays even worse in the era of torrent software.

My girlfriend wants it so she can watch all those terrible Disney Original Movies because she ate that shit up as a kid. So, we'll have it for that reason alone and I don't mind checking out whatever they do with Marvel properties.

Also I'm hoppin' mad that Disney is responsible for murdering the public domain, so this seems like double dipping to me. "Pay us for the privilege of seeing the back catalog we stole from the past three generations as well as all future generations until the end of society as we know it, over which we murdered all hope of the best tales of the 20th century and beyond passing into the mythology of tomorrow, because we couldn't bear the thought of not being able to make money by doing stuff like launch this service some day".
And you know we all will, because what else are we gonna do?

I was never not going to subscribe to this when they announced new, exclusive Star Wars content. The inclusion of the Vault and whatever Marvel is doing are lagniappe.

Jeff Goldblum Is Getting His Own Disney+ Docuseries

Quote:
A Jeff Goldblum-led docuseries will be among the series available on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform Disney+, the company announced Thursday at its Investor Day presentation at its studio lot in Burbank, Calif.

Called “The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” the series comes from Disney-owned National Geographic. Per Disney: “Jeff pulls back the curtain on a seemingly familiar object to reveal a world of astonishing connections, fascinating science, and a whole lot of big ideas.”

Disney+ has already been confirmed for PS4 and there's a bunch of Marvel and Star Wars stuff I'd like to catch up on and 90s animated films I'd like to rewatch so it's more a question of when I subscribe than if.

They're apparently also in talks to get it on Switch, where we don't even have Netflix yet, so that would be my preferred method since I don't have a PS4 or a roku.

All these movie stars doing comic book tv shows on a 6.99/mo streaming service... reduced to the level of Brenton Thwaites... whom I support in all endeavors...

Anyway, Disney can have my money when they employ Brenton Thwaites and also opening weekend any time they have a new movie out.
