Default What's Your Favorite Music Of 2018?

This year had some pretty great stuff! What were your favorites? My top 10 songs of the year:

10) Chvrches: Miracle This song needs some subwoofer to truly shine.

9) O.A.R.: Just Like Paradise Some great ska from a band who knows the genre. And oh my God that bridge!

8) Brett Dennen:Already Gone Great southern rocking for a Californian.

7) The Weeknd w/ Kendrick Lamar: Pray for Me Hands down the best track on a stacked soundtrack. The Weeknd's voice is otherwordly, and Kendrick is always great.

6) Camila Cabello: Havana Probably the best pure pop song of the year. You can practically smell the rum and cigar smoke listening to this.

5) George Ezra: Shotgun Ezra is one of my favorite new artists of this decade, and this song perfectly encapsulates his laid-back soul/rock ethos.

4) Greta Van Fleet: When the Curtain Falls Coming off a blistering debut EP last year, the world's premiere Zep soundalikes rock even harder here, with overtones of Dio era Sabbath to complement the LZ.

3) Florence and the Machine: Hunger Florence Welch has the most powerful rock voice this side of Grace Slick and Nancy Wilson, and hearing her confess her innermost pain just makes for an amazing track.

2) Beck: Colors Yeah, the album was released last year, but this was a single this year, and it's his most phenomenal work since the 1990s.

1) Childish Gambino: This is America Possibly the song of the decade.

I don't usually keep up with music that comes out this year, but the Black Panther soundtrack was indeed great and This is America is a great song with a video will be considered among the all-time greatest.

This is prolly the first year in a while where I didn't come across an album that I had on repeat over and over for the duration of it. The year started with an epic misfire from the otherwise dependable Justin Timberlake and it didn't really get any better for me. Old favorites put out a lot of stuff I just didn't really take to (I still have to give boarding house ranch another shot and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that remembers that MGMT actually put out a new album this year). The state of alt rock just got more and more dire, if I have to hear another single by lovelytheband this year...yikes.

Stuff I liked

Dirty Computer was fine as an album, but honestly didn't have staying power for me. Janelle is infectious as a performer, but I don't really care for her ballads and they show up too much in her work. Screwed is a great bop off of it though.

Chvrches new album is okay; I really love Get Out, but I'm not as into miracle as you are.

Pray For Me off black panther is great, I have a lot of friends into the weeknd and I usually find his lyrics leaning a bit too much toward fuccboi territory, so the collab with Kendrick seemed like it did the trick to sharpen his verses more.

Nameless, Faceless off of Courtney Barnett's new album is probably the stand out. I've only just gotten into her, and while I can't really commit to listening to her daily or anything I really dig her vibe and her sardonic, but gentle writing.

Ghost Town off of Ye was great, since if you ask most anyone they'll tell you it was a holdover from another album that found its place on this awkward, public meltdown fueled release.

I'm definitely with you on Hunger and Florence in general.

My bop of the year: New Light by John Mayer. I just fuckin' love this song, its so dopey and playful and cute and scaled back but still shows off what he does best.

There were also some great releases from bands I've listened to for a long time, Baby, you're a haunted house feels like Gerard Way has finally really settled into writing the glam rock that he's been toying with for the past few years, and I really liked the latest Coheed and Cambria album, which had a nice arena rock throwback called Old Flames. Moby had a great album this year too, but to me he's frankly always had a really high batting average.

I'm not sure of much in this old world but I know that Brandi Carlile released a back to front fucking masterpiece this year.

And if you're sick of me not shutting up about The Oh Hellos in the Christmas thread I have bad news for you:

I am terrible at keeping up with music but I did listen to stuff from this year:
Mirah's Understanding is probably her best album. It's marvelous from start to finish and is easily my #1 pick for the year. "Information" strikes deep into the current political diaspora, while "Love Jetty" highlights her delightful voice.

I also like what I've heard of A Perfect Circle's new album. I'll need to sample some of the other stuff here.

While there's a pile of stuff I found this year that is just damned excellent, Irving Force - "Godmode" would be real near the top of that pile.

Hollywood Burns - "Invaders" would also be soaring.

Mine is still pretty fluid as I go back and revisit stuff I liked earlier in the year, but here's where it stands as of today:

it's been a really miserable and upsetting year and it's been sort of weird realizing my music tastes have been gravitating somewhat toward what may count as a low-key form of self-harm recently.

(links in this post may not be entirely wholesome)

anyway mixpeed action is easily my favorite album of the year, although my favorite individual track is either this, by the same person, or this one

or holy night, silent night, which i promise is vastly more soul-healing

a couple other albums i loved wholeheartedly are feryquitous' irui and kamome sano's happy ending

If you'll forgive the indulgence again this year, here's a link to my blog in which I talk more than is reasonable about the music of 2018.
