Apropos of nothing: which character do you think has had sex with his/her own stand? And why? (Why do you choose that character, that is. The why of sex is obvious.)

I'm pretty sure people in JoJo are still trying to work out what sex even is.

There being generations of them running around is really unrelated to what I mean, but okay.

I will accept that about Joseph (he did flirt with pulling off a half-Oedipus in his youth) but I'm not so sure about the others.

Jonathan died on his wedding day, and the series pretty strongly suggests that Jonathan is the sort of person who'd never consider extramarital sex.

On that same wedding day, his wife knew she was pregnant.

Conclusion: There isn't actually any sex in the jojoverse. Hamon makes babies.

I read it as both...
1) She didn't know.
and...
2) The honeymoon was like a week delayed.

My absolute favorite thing about Jojo is that little inconsistencies like that are either completely ignored or handwaved away because Araki just changed his mind on what he wanted to do and was like "eh, whatever".

Like...Erina escapes in the coffin Dio was going to use, and then in the 80s they find Dio at the bottom of the ocean in that coffin. It's never addressed. Araki was just like "I don't care, shut up, there's Stands now" and we just kept going.

Also the current fight against Formaggio is in the grand scheme of things not super exciting, but it's so far the first time in Part 5 where I'm like "okay I don't know how he'll get out of this". Like, I have a few ideas, but I don't KNOW, so that's good. It's good. And I totally fell for the fake out where they reveal that he's only 13 cms tall at that time.

Waow. OK, so that was exciting up until it wasn't because instead I was getting overcome with PRIMAL ANXIETIES. Seriously, fuck spiders, fuck spiders so hard

When Bucciarati unzipped his own head to dodge, I laughed and said out loud to no one "that's fucking sick". This show rules.

Thank god for that, too. I'm having my first experience with Crunchyroll in watching Dragonball Super lately and it's a fucking mess. It cuts to commercial in the middle of a line, and when it comes back it's skipped five minutes ahead! The ads are irritating, too. I don't mind sitting through them in concept but when the same one plays three times back-to-back-to-back it gets tiresome.

Looking forward to checking this out on a streaming service that actually has its shit together.

Are you watching a free version or a pay version. I watch Crunchyroll with JBear (his account) and I've never seen that.

The free version. I'm sure the pay version's a lot smoother.

OK. For some reason I thought they went full pay but I'll have to remember to use the free version sometime.

Yeah unlike Hulu the pay version has no ads at all.

Putting ONLY season 1 seems cruel and unusual.

I've paid for Crunchyroll for a while but I kinda miss when I didn't, because I would get weird ass political ads for Hawaii candidates and Nevada even though I live in California, and commericals that were like local car dealerships in Texas. And they would typically show 2 or 3 commercials, but it was always just the ONE commercial 2 or 3 times?

It was pretty hilarious how bad it was.

The new Jojo OP is bad (by Jojo OP standards, anyway), and I don't know what to do with myself

The ending isn't Freek'n You anymore either! It IS an Enigma song from 1999 though, which is still appropriate but...not horny at all, which seems wrong for Part 5.

I actually... kinda like it? It wasn't as instantly good as the last one and I had a similar first reaction to you. And Fighting Gold is a freaking impossible act to follow up. But it's a good song! It's just... one of those songs that demands you pump the volume up waaayyyy loud for it to start bumpin', and for whatever reason it just sounds quiet and timid within the episode. Like, at normal TV levels you can barely hear the drums. Watching this webm version with the sound turned up helped my appreciation for it a lot. It's still sub-optimal since that's not the conditions I'll be watching the show under, but I don't think it's a total loss.

To be fair, with the way things were paced, I don't think there was ever a moment towards the end of this arc that would have lent itself to a sound fx version with the same gravitas as the episodes that concluded Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, and Stardust Crusaders. Bucciarati's confrontation with King Crimson just kinda... wasn't paced perfectly for it. I'm sure fans on the internet will make one though. I saw them do it for previous OPs.

I just noticed that JoeyJoJo is on the Netflix (ED: Wait it's already been posted, on this very page even, oops!), maybe it's time to finally dive into this series? Everything I know about it is basically through meme osmosis.

Part 1 is basically Fist of the North Star
Part 2 is where Jojo starts to become it's own thing (it's real good; WWII w/ vampires and magic karate)

Netflix only has SEASON 1 right now. Season 1 is Part 1 (the first 9 episodes) and Part 2 together. So...yeah, you could get into it now. Part 1 is FINE and GOOD but it's nothing outstanding, but it's also only 9 episodes so it won't take too long to get through. Part 2 is great though.

Part 3 changes the entire central gimmick and is what most people associate with Jojo, so it's a drag you can't just jump into it. Dang it, Netflix

"It's called a Stand because it stands beside you"

Araki looked around and realized this was kind of boring.

"Okay so the next ones they encounter are going to be a mosquito, a boat, and a whirlpool."

I have only just started watching this after it showed up on Netflix. And Iím aware that it gradually becomes a bloody insane magical martial-arts epic, but, honestly, if it just remained a Drama set in Victorian England with the emotions heightened to hyper-real levels... I would be just as happy.

Happier, possibly.

Phantom Blood, the first part, is genuinely one of the very best arcs the series has to offer, with tonal and storytelling nuances that are unique to it, so when it's often treated as just this stopgap measure on the way to the True Hits I'm always saddened by that perception. It's not superfluous to anything else in the series and is worth experiencing on its own or as the introduction to a long-term narrative.
