Saw Captain Marvel this weekend and... it was fine.

I'm SUPER DUPER GLAD that the movie resonated with so many people who were long overdue to get a marvel movie starring someone who wasn't some dude. That's a good thing! I REALLY REALLY LIKED the reveal that the skrulls were not bad guys. That was a really good idea! Young(er) nick fury and Carol being best friends was genuinely great!

But otherwise? I just thought it was fine.

I think this is a case where the movie was not specifically for me, in the way other MCU films generally are. And honestly, that's okay! I don't need every movie in to be made with me specifically in mind! These movies can be for other people! Heck, the fact that this is one of the FIRST movies in this multi-billion-dollar franchise that didn't feel like it was specifically for me is kind of a huge problem all by itself!

So yeah, basically I enjoyed it, but didn't LOVE it, but I'm glad other people did.

Default A NEXTWAVE MOVIE WOULD BE THE MOST FOR-ME MOVIE EVER.

NOW MAKE A FUCKING NEXTWAVE MOVIE GOD DAMN U.

YOU JUST ESTABLISHED THAT MONICA RAMBEAU EXISTS.

TEAM HER UP WITH A SURLY ROBOT, AN IDIOT KLEPTOMANIAC, AN ALCOHOLIC BARGAIN-BIN SUPERMAN, AND A LADY WHO REALLY HATES DEMONS, AND HAVE THEM FIGHT FING FANG FOOM!

HAVE THEM FIGHT FING FANG FOOM AS AN OPENING BEFORE YOU EVEN SHOW THE TITLE.

Don't make Nextwave and instead feature Boom-Boom in something that's good.

I get the sense that most everyone thinks of X-Factor primarily as Peter David's comedy stuff instead of the Simonson book with teenage orphan adventures, and thinks of X-Force as Liefeld's Murder Children or the gritty 2000s death squad books instead of secretly frequently being the best 90s X-book about characters having feelings under a number of writers after Liefeld was gone.

So, honestly, I think Next Wave is . . . probably a best case scenario for an adaptation of Tabitha Smith, even though she's totally out of character and definitely more fun in the orphan adventures version of X-Factor and young adult feelings version of X-Force.

(What's actually probably going to happen is: No one will adapt any property prominently featuring her.)

I just want to believe in a world where someone adapts Fallen Angels and it ends up paying very belated dividends for Jo Duffy, even though that's not remotely how these things work. But my daydreams do!

I mean, they basically did in Deadpool except it wasn't her despite basically being her and it was Negasonic Teenage Warhead because that's a more fun name.

Homecoming? Go sit on a tack!
Spider-Man 2? Go eat a pear!

Pretty much sums up the way I feel about the 2016 Ghostbusters!

On a related note, Captain Marvel left me feeling that it was made 99% specifically for me, with that 1% being a transforming robot.

The movie was great in general but seeing superhero stuff happening in places I actually recognized was such a trip. I've been on that metro! I've been through that stretch of desert! I've been in that seedy bar in Rosamond! Even if that last one was manufactured for the movie, it sure caught the exact feeling of any given bar in the desert - find a place in Rosamond, Mojave, or Boron that serves alcohol and it'll be pretty much exactly what you saw in the movie.

Not a single Joshua tree anywhere though. On the plus side, that means no Joshua trees were damaged.

Anyway, looking forward to the Nextwave movie now that Monica Rambeau has been confirmed in the MCU.

I guess I never posted my Captain Marvel impressions! I thought it was a mid-tier Marvel movie overall that was important for just existing. I didn't really buy Brie Larson though, and I'm not sure why. My main takeaway was that Carol had the most fun power set to watch in the movies. There was just something satisfying about her blasting energy from her hands, or streaking through the sky and into space blazing fire behind her, or going super saiyan, or flying all the way through a spaceship. I was still kinda like "wait what" when she flies off at warp speed on her own, holy shit though.

The CGI on Sam Jackson's and Clark Gregg's faces was extremely obvious and distracting to me. I thought they felt like CG characters from a Robert Zemeckis movie.

If we do not see at least 20 more Miles Morales animated Spiderman movies, the universe has failed us.

Huh, I thought Sam Jackson's face was real solid and didn't really take me out of the movie at all. I was talking to my girlfriend about how good I thought it looked and said I was excited to look back on this in 5 years and see how it holds up/if it looks totally jank.

There was one shot where he laughed and suddenly looked fake to me, but overall I felt like they did a good job with it.

Just saw Captain Marvel and, well...

It's just that Oh my god it is far and away my favorite Marvel movie, possibly even my favorite superhero movie. It 's not the best Marvel movie (although definitely in the upper half) but I loved it so much.

Hmm.. I also snuck a rum and coke into the theater, so I might have just been rolling with it a bit more than I normally would've? No idea. It's weird that it's so much better than the fake Peter Cushing from just a few years ago, but it's probably totally different tech.

The Colson didn't look as good for some reason or was at least more hard to recognize since I don't really know what Clark Gregg was supposed to look like when he was younger.

I found the CGI Samuel L Jackson very distracting, but I enjoyed the movie anyway.

CGI Sam Jackson mostly looked alright to me but there were times it felt like the cut over his eye wasn't moving naturally. Coulson didn't work as well for me because there were a couple times it felt like his age was jumping around randomly even in a single given scene, but maybe that was just the skrull having trouble.
