Nah, that's pretty typical for popularity polls. Lots of manga popularity polls get goofy joke write-in votes. Check out this Asassination Classroom poll results:

Meanwhile in Gintama, the mangaka wrote an entire story arc about how absurd the results were for his comic's popularity polls, including characters like Justaway and the mangaka himself being more popular than some main characters. (Which, btw, was probably the best story arc he's ever done.)

Got my copy of the In This Corner of the World manga yesterday. It's nicely made, similar in size/paper quality to a Viz Signature book. Only read half because it was Halloween, but main difference so far is a subplot with Suzu and the red light district ladies, which was only touched on in the movie. I had read somewhere that the movie writers had added their own epilogue, but peeking ahead shows the same scenes at the end of the book.

There are translation notes, but they're unfortunately written sideways in the gutter area and not in the back on their own pages, which makes them small and hard to read as well as risky to the binding.

That new Akira boxset looks like some juicy stuff, and the idea of finally being able to read it unflipped is very appealing, but I just can't justify shelling out $200 for something I already have, albeit in the older editions...

Devilman Grimoire is out in English and as curious as I am I did binge the raws two years ago and I'm not sure I want that thing in my house.

Has the original Devilman come out yet? THAT one is a lot easier to justify/explain to visitors.

Sarah Horrocks posted a few panels and pages from Devilman Grimoire and, while I don't feel compelled to read it, I'm still intrigued. Takatou's interpretation of Nagai's sloppy grossness is very interesting- he's modernized and cleaned it up while maintaining it's loose depravity.

OG Devilman is scheduled to come out in March of next year. I'll be scooping that one up.

they just picked up the old Yamato comic, too.

I will continue to make fun of them for publishing shit like Citrus and however many monster girl voyeur strips, but maybe not as much as I otherwise would.

If slime-girl crypto-lesbians staring at one another across cups of tea might pay for Ashita no Joe in hardback then I say let one thousand flowers bloom.

Crack open the newly-released Devilman Grimoire at that same B&N and you will believe anything.

Good God even I didn't remember it being so ridiculously gory or naked.

Yeah, that was sort of the thought running through my mind. "Wait, they busted the guy who near-categorically refused to sexualize any of his character designs instead of [insert scuzzbag artist here]?"

Ugggggh.

For anyone else wondering who didn't want to search for articles, yes, actual child porn, we're not just talking doujin here. He was in possession of a ton and straightforwardly admitted to liking it. "I liked girls in the higher grades of elementary school to the second grade of junior high." Goddammit, dude.

Apparently possession only became an actual crime in Japan about two years ago. Ugh. Hopefully the stigma against anything involving actual children is on the rise and that shit can be de-normalized ASAP.

I mean, he wasn't arrested by The Manga Police.

He was arrested because police found records of him buying chid pornography when busting a child porn ring.

While that is true, I was referring more to the fact that there have to be any number of obvious sleazoid artists who have to be using real references for their art, or are pretty obviously pedophiles. Kitoh and the Tsugumomo guy for example. Why/how they picked up Watsuki instead of any of those guys is a mystery (well, no, he probably just didn't cover his tracks as well).

I heard one time Kenichi Sonoda left his laptop on a subway train and the guy who found and opened it turned to ash.

Did he actually do something or he just draws cute, young girls?

Obviously child pornography is wrong. Like, super duper wrong (and again, weird that it's Watsuki, whose work is very unsexy). But also, perversion is more or less universal, and a lot of people use art as a tool to explore theirs, consciously or not. For many artists, this is actually incentivized by their publishers and/or fanbase. It bugs me to hear "oh, well this guy's OBVIOUSLY A PERVERT" because everyone, everywhere is a damn pervert.

Hiroaki Samura, for example, draws some problematic stuff. And if you read interviews with him, some of that stuff is obviously an extension of very bizarre, fetishistic views and opinions about women. But, nevertheless, his weird fetish for the nape of women's necks or whatever is legal. Same with Osamu Tezuka. Drew some bizarre, very politically incorrect work dealing with sex. Also drew some furry stuff. Shirow Masamune? Don't even need to go into detail. On the flipside of the gender coin, Kaoru Mori is probably the most intense draw-er of female asses in the known universe (aside from like, R Crumb).

I guess all I'm saying is, people think about sex. They like it. But most people's feelings about it can't safely be expressed in most situations in society, so many people put those feelings into their artwork. Some people actually do keep the two separate! As we all very well know, some do not or can not.

Uhh... again though, just so we're all on the same page, I'm super-not approving of pedophilia, but I am super-approving of just being a horndog weirdo.

Yeah, I really can't follow along with the suggestion in previous posts that the police should first be raiding the homes of every artist you find distasteful, before they arrest someone who bought child porn DVDs from a child porn ring.

As this arrest shows and as 2017 should make pretty clear, you can't necessarily judge what terrible things a person is doing in private based on their public facing behavior.

The thing with this guy in particular is that they discovered receipts of him purchasing child porn after a child porn ring got busted. And the thing about child porn is, even indirect engagement in that industry like being a consumer is harmful. It isn't a victimless crime. Because you are the demand that incentivizes and drives production and therefore creates victims. It's not just a matter of punishing a "lolicon" for being gross.

Ironically enough, purchasing/possession of child porn wasn't even illegal in Japan until a few years ago. If this happened a few years ago it wouldn't have amounted to anything. So thank goodness that's changed.

Nobody's defending child porn manufacturing or consumption. My point is that what's expressed in one's work isn't necessarily a 1/1 extension of their private conduct.
