I am incapable of responding with snark to the news that DC is making a New Gods movie, let alone on that is being directed by a woman who claims her favorite superhero is Big Barda. I am set for 3-5 years of anticipatory frothing. I am guessing Ed Asner is too old to reprise his role as Granny Goodness. I wonder if we'll get to see Barda and Scott declare their love or their plan to beat sharks to death from the inside.

I'd only worry about how tightly the Bros. will control the property. New Gods can be very easily be its own movie, hell, its own franchise, but if the Bros. want to bind it to The Franchise, denying them Darkseid and the big hitters in anticipation of a Justice League film that will likely never happen, then...

I really can't imagine they'd greenlight a New Gods movie without Darkseid. I think this is more likely to be a Darkseid and the New Gods movie. He is the one semi-recognizable character from New Gods, no one else is remotely a heavy hitter. Or even a character known by people who aren't comics geeks.
Ideally this plays off largely off The Pact; it is pretty much the perfect story engine for one grand sci-fi adventure. It gives you two heroes (Orion and Scott) with a common enemy (Darkseid) and no reason to like each other. Orion gets a traditional hero's journey, Scott gets to play out a grand romance with Barda. Metron is probably there. |

I have been largely unimpressed and uninterested with the DC films to date, but I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt and then some. A New Gods movie. God damn. |

That's pretty fitting since the first few pages of New Gods #1 basically depicts Ragnarok.

I don’t read DC comics and I probably wouldn’t remember him from the cartoons, but I recognize his name from different conversations. A lot of characters just sort of seep into pop culture consciousness if they’re around for long enough.

I'm just saying if they think they're going to sell a big budget movie on the name recognition of Darkseid they have their work cut out for them.

I said semi-recognizable. I don't think Darkseid is a household name or anything, only that he is the most recognizable New Gods character, with a dozen or so animated appearances over the last 25 years. And as much as I love a lot of New Gods characters, Darkseid is and always has been the breakout character from the line.

I collected Iron Man comics for at least three years and I went into the Iron Man movie unable to remember any significant plot points. On the other hand, everyone knows who Superman and Batman are, but it didn't help make their movie any better. Audience expectations can be a burden. I think where Marvel thrived was in leaning into some characters being virtually unknown and letting the directors bring their own vision to the table. (GotG I think is an excellent example of this)

Man people like to think I've said things I haven't
These statements are all true: 1. Darkseid is the most recognizable New Gods character 2. Darkseid is not very recognizable to the average movie watcher 3. WB will not try to sell a New Gods movie off how recognizable Darkseid is |

I wasn't saying they should make a movie without him, just that "he's the most recognizable New Gods character" is a very relative statement.

I amend what I said; WB won't sell it on Darkseid but on the actor playing him, the way Robert Downey Jr. sold Iron Man. Assuming the casting isn't botched to hell and back, which is a pretty big "if".
