The Iron Man villain bench is about as deep as Green Lantern's. IM's a *bit* better because of all those cold war spy-types kicking around, but... you know how they have to keep hauling out Giganta as a WW baddie whenever they do the Legion of Doom?

Haha, what? Maybe I'm just ignorant of Iron Man and way more cued into the GLC. But Green Lantern has one of the secret best rogue galleries out there. Although I will admit that it's bolstered a bit by the fact that any cosmic threat from outer space originating with other characters are natural enemies of the Green Lantern Corp as well (like Mongul). Just off the top of my head:

Sinestro/Sinestro Corp
Parallax
Red Lanterns/Atrocitous
Manhunters
Nekron/Black Hand/Black Lanterns
Anti-Monitor
Larfleeze
Hector Hammond
Star Sapphires/Carol Ferris
Vandal Savage
Krona/The Guardians
Mongul/Warworld

So much good shit to draw from. You could make an S-Rank movie out of any one of those. I couldn't tell you an iconic Iron Man villain if my life depended on it. I think his best might be the Mandarin? How awful is that?

I think n52 Supes gets a bad rep and some of it is deserved but most isn't. His self-titled book was pretty bad for a long time, and I think that's where most of it comes from. But outside of that, Superman has been pretty great. Morrison's Action Comics run for the first year was actually amazing and a great bridge for Multiversity and other stuff. Batman & Superman has been amazing too - being really effective at contrasting the two characters while showing they're still two sides of the same coin. I've also been a big fan of his pairing with Wonder Woman, even if the execution hasn't always been the greatest. It's a pairing that makes sense and it's been fun seeing Superman romantically involved with someone who is in every possible sense his equal and not have to constantly tip-toe around them and just relax and be himself. This recent crossover event, Superdoom, has been fantastic too. So comicbooky in the best ways.

N52 Supes is basically MoS Supes - a dude who lost his parents early and is still trying to figure out all this hero stuff on his own. And part of what makes the N52 so compelling for me, is that we get a similar universe, but the biggest and most glaring difference, is that Supes isn't the Supes we know - he's hesitant, reserved, not quite a leader of men. He lets others in the Justice League take the lead, and it has disastrous consequences (I mean, Lex Luthor is now a JL member!). And I'm fairly certain that, as time goes on, we'll see Superman come into his own naturally, and when he begins to resemble the Supermen of old, we'll see a lot of things in the N52 get rectified.

Most of those guys are just random Skittles Lanterns, and their time passed about five years ago (if they were ever interesting to begin with; Johns shot his wad far too soon on that entire angle). They tried elevating Nekron to prime villain status and that flamed out miserably along with Blackest Night, and most of the rest of the people on that list are either terrible ideas in and of themselves (bug-Parallax) or villains more associated with other heroes or events (Vandal Savage best known is a JSA villain, for instance).

So you've got Sinestro - who I like a lot - Hector Hammond (aka the Dollar Store version of the Leader), and Star Sapphire (GL's Catwoman, without Selina's charm). Then it comes down to talking sharks.

It's telling that they tried shifting Mongul and the Cyborg Superman into the GL books, because his bad guys needed some boosting.

I could not disagree more with you Sven on your assessment of GL's rogues gallery. But suffice to say, I think it's telling that your deconstruction of my argument has more to do with belittling GL's villains than uplifting anyone from Iron Man. And even if we take everything you say at face value, you've got Sinestro vs The Mandarin. One is one of the most layered villains with one of the most interesting personal histories with a hero there is in comics (Training Day before Training Day). The other is a racist caricature of East Asian people.

Iron Man also has Stane, Justin hammer, MODOK and the rest of AIM, Crimaon Dynamo and Titanium Man (which, I'll grant you, are pretty much palette swaps of one another).

It's not a great list, but it's something

*googles*

Wait, they killed off both Supes' parents in New 52?

Why would someone do that? How many needlessly tragic backstories do they need? I liked that Superman did the right thing just because it was the right thing.

You missed Iron Man's greatest villain:

I always thought that Marvel had the right idea when they moved Doom over to be an Iron Man villain, but they didn't really follow up on it. He's like Lex in that he works opposite a LOT of heroes (another reason that GL's rogues stink so much is that they're very GL-specific), but the whole magic vs science, capitalism vs fascism angle made the whole thing work.

Anyway, I wasn't saying Iron Man's villains are any good (although Mandarin's pretty damn fun; if you can't get past a caricature origin, then you're going to hate like 90% of villains created pre-1990), it's just that for what's now viewed as a top-tier hero, GL's are also quite awful.

GL isn't really top tier, though. Everyone's secondary to Batman and Supes.

That link doesn't say anything like that. It doesn't even confirm, merely suggests that Shazam will not be a part of the DC movie universe.

It doesn't bode well alongside the rumored rule against comedy after Green Lantern flopped, though.

1) rumor
2) GL wasn't remotely a comedy

I'd just point out that, given both the grimness in current "Ooops, was that your arm?" new 52 and the fact that WB is putting the car before the horse in the DC movie universe, I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor was true.

I didn't mean comedies, I meant the use of comedy. Apparently they have a "no jokes" rule.

And yeah, GL was pretty close to a superhero comedy.

As far as I'm concerned the ONLY green lantern is John Stewart.

Fuck the comics. John Stewart is the best.

I thought it was seriously trying to emulate what Iron Man did --strike a balance between a superhero epic and down-to-earth character humor.

Except the humor was... not very funny.

Not was the epic very epic.

All I remember is Hal saving a bunch of people from a crashing helicopter by giving it wheels and turning it into a race car complete with a Hot Wheels toy track over the crowd. And Kilowog being surprisingly mean compared to the comics version.

As I understand it, Green Lantern had a lot of interference from the studio.

Which is a problem with DC comics, now that I think about it.

My main problem with GL is that they tried to cram too much into it. They had enough material to make at least two movies - but nooo, they wanted to deal with Parallax and the GL Corps and Hector Hammond and Sinestro's fall from grace. Is almost as if somebody had said "we will never have a sequel to this, so let's go crazy with it!", creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If they really thought they wouldn't get a sequel, then they wouldn't have slow played Sinestro. He's the villain everyone wanted to see.

You kinda DO need the comics to get his best bits, though. Where his constructs are hyper-complex, architecturally sound, well, constructs, instead of the plain green beams and bubbles from the show.

(Yeah, yeah, the schedule for animators is different than that for a comic artist, but even the show acknowledged he wasn't very creative with his ring )
