Default It's Twin Peaks for Kids! Talking About Gravity Falls

MORE THREADS

So Gravity Falls is a new Disney show that happens to be really really good. It's exactly the kind of thing that I loved as a kid: weird supernatural mysteries and conspiracy junk mixed with hilarious and quirky characters and dialogue. The rundown is that these two kids...

...are sent away by their parents on summer vacation to stay with their creepy great uncle...

...to spend their vacation in the small, sleepy town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. Gravity Falls is surrounded by thick wilderness, and conceals a lot of weird goings-on from prying eyes. But when Dipper finds a mysterious book, the kids become acutely aware of the dangerous situation they've been thrown into.

So yeah! It's a fun show! I've heard it be compared to Ducktales, but I personally feel that it's leaps and bounds above it in terms of quality. It very closely reminds me of the most recent version of Scooby-Doo, especially with the overarching conspiracy plot. There's a lot to be gained by discussing it with people, too, since the show is packed to the gills with secret messages and things inserted into single frames. Every episode contains a message coded in a simple cipher during the end credits that gives hints about future episodes, and the opening theme has things like this one-frame insert:

People have been decoding it since day one. (note: that's an early version. The star with the eye in it should be Gideon, plus there's probably been more work put into it by now). There's also things like the repeated variations on the numbers six, one, and eight; a mysterious bald man who likes to hide in plain sight; and allusions to Gruncle Stan not being what he seems.

...And even if you're not into that sort of thing, there's a huge surplus of sheer charm and clever wit that makes every episode entertaining on its own, even if you're not trying to untangle the enigma of Gravity Falls the whole time.

The first episode is available for free through iTunes or on Youtube; new episodes air Fridays on the Disney Channel and quickly pop up on the internet. Go watch it!

I am reasonably certain that Stan is the platonic ideal that everyone aspires to be when they grow up.

I love DuckTales and all, but Gravity Falls is waaaaaay better.

Gravity Falls is amazing. Also, this tumblr posts a lot of gifs from the show, but they're filled with spoilers if you haven't watched all the episodes: http://gfgifs.tumblr.com/ And by spoilers I mainly mean gags.

I seriously need to watch this eventually, if for nothing else but the animation because damn. The gorgeously rendered backgrounds! The colors! The smooth, character-driven animation! In an era of cheap cookie-cutter flash 'toons and purposely ugly art styles, seeing a new kid's (all ages??) show that's so obviously made with love and care right off the bat like this makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I've been meaning to watch this since it first came up in the animation thread. Finally did and enjoyed it quite a bit, it's fun if a bit spastic. Am I the only one who finds Kristen Schaal to be a weird choice though?

Though between this and my soft spot for Alan Wake I'm beginning to think I just dig stories about weird shit in the Pacific Northwest.

oh god, the creator of the show is a total babby:

this is a face that should be asking you "Tall, Grande, or Venti", not creating and running neato and expensively animated shows

Fun interview with him here.

Man Episode 3 is hitting the Twin Peaks vibe full force and I am loving it.

Five is awesome too. I can't believe how aggressively strange Disney is allowing this show to get. Smile Dip People Smile Dip.

Even when something is censored (Groucho's Cigar for some reason?) It's commented on.

Also this show's cast is seriously brilliant (Five episodes in and I completely reverse my opinion on Schall, this is the best she's ever been). Any show with the wherewithal to cast John Oliver as an evil wax Sherlock Holmes is a show I love.

I'm getting a distinct C. H. Greenblatt (Chowder, good Spongebob, etc.) vibe from some of this artwork. Was he involved in the show in any way, or is that just coincidental?

The interview said he worked on Flapjack. I guess that doesn't really answer your question though

Well, Flapjack always reminded me of Spongebob, so there's a couple degrees of separation there.

I just watched the premiere. I like the show... not love, but like. Some of the sight gags are wonderfully weird and the art style is charming; very reminiscent of C.H. Greenblatt as mentioned earlier. However, the voices kind of stick in my craw. Mabel sounds pretty much like you'd expect her to, for better or worse, but Dipper is a little too plain, and Stan just doesn't have the same bite as K'nuckles from Hirsch's previous series. I guess Hirsch himself supplied that character's voice, but I could think of a handful of actors who would have been a better fit.

As someone who just wolfed down the series in one sitting, I don't think it really hit it's stride until episode 3.

The one funny element about the show is how quickly it's characters become absolutely blasé to everything around them. I kind of figured that it'd be more Twin Peakish with the supernatural stuff going on in the margins, but by episode six the main character is hanging out with Manotaurs and hunting Multibears without blinking.

I just watched the first one, and it won me over pretty thoroughly. Especially when it got to the gnomes.

I was not won over by the first one, but really enjoyed the second. Kristen Schall is possibly in too many things, but I doubt it'll be a big issue.
