Hm, though. It may recurse itself... I don't think you can butcher meat with those things. Careful not to starve!

Oh, no problem there! I died shortly afterwards. I hit a giant zombie gecko, forgetting they were immune to poison, and nearly dying trying to stab it. Then I kited it with a wand of frost, blowing half the charges before realizing they were resistant to cold. Then I just gave up and teleported away, only to die a turn later, when I bamf'd out next to a random gnoll with a glowing flail.

Default A +0 cursed game of addiction

I haven't ever been able to get into rogue-likes in the past. That being said, reading through this LP made me give DC:SS a whirl.

Besides just giving an idea of the basic gameplay, I think you mixed in enough basic strategy and infotainment to lure me in.

I have been pissing away hours playing this stupid game now. Thanks/I hate you.

Sigmund is going to kill you, crush your corpse into a fine paste, and then spread it on Bagel for breakfast.

Is it just me, or are troll berserkers THE MOST terrifying class?

I have to know, because the one time a troll berserker has died thus far, it took an entire ZOO to do it.

(also you should show how to play a naga warper)

So... continuing on my goal of sampling each of the gods in the game, I rolled a Deep Dwarf Healer.

It's... kind of an unusual play style, to say the least. Took me a little bit to realize that I pretty much want to try to pacify every natural creature that crosses my path for the piety gain so I can afford to spam healing invocations. On the other hand, not having to fight hydras at all is pretty great. On the other other hand, I don't gain as much experience from hydras as I would with, say, a conjurer.

Sadly, I'm having to abandon the Lair; floor 8 has multiple azure jellies on it, and I don't think those can be pacified.

Incidentally, Boojum, after benjibot dies wins, will you be upgrading this LP to 0.6?

Goodbye, DTSUND.

1296153 DTSUND the Executioner (level 26, 104/205 HPs)
Began as a Deep Dwarf Healer on Mar 20, 2010.
            Was a Priest of Elyvilon.
            Escaped with the Orb
            ... and 3 runes (of 3 types) on Mar 22, 2010!
Man, they aren't kidding when they say Deep Dwarves are good for speedruns. I wasn't even trying anything of the sort, and I still finished in about 1/3 as many turns as my previous best. Guess all the not-resting after each encounter would help, but... that doesn't account for how I also only needed half as much real world time.

Bizarrely enough, the run almost ended pretty early, before I even got my first rune. Rounded a corner right into an orc sorceror, who proceed to ram two consecutive bolts of fire right down my throat. Would have killed me if I hadn't royally lucked out and got life saving from Elyvilon (I wasn't praying).

I also had to abandon Lair early. There was a slime pit on Lair:8 like the one benjibot had to deal with, except this one was nastier; multiple azure jellies, an acid blob, several death oozes. Quite fortunately, I managed to snag a completely great randart axe before bailing, though.

Berserking as a Deep Dwarf in the 0.5 line is great. You get your HP doubled, and it gets cut in half again after the berserk ends, but that just means you effectively took half as much damage! I was able to lay off the healing quite a bit once I discovered this tactic and started berserking even against fairly easy encounters. And if it wore off and I was still in combat? Invoke Elyvilon's Purification and get rid of the slowing, proceed as normal. Sadly, this won't be quite as effective in 0.6...

I did no spellcasting, something of a first for my successful runs. Found +2 crystal plate mail on D:1 and didn't look back. That, along with a +5,+6 randart broad axe (holy wrath, AC+5, EV+1) from the Lair(!) and an amulet of rage, pretty much formed the backbone of my equipment for the whole game.

Zot:5 was brutal. All the ancient liches I found proceeded to summon fiends to their side, which I really couldn't easily afford. First one was the worst; I killed the lich, but the fiends were still there and still tormenting (plus hellfire, etc). Fortunately, I had a rod of warding and 15 evocations, so I was able to abjure them... but I had to pray and get life saving again while I got the rod out (I was pious enough to rely on that). But that kind of wrecked my piety enough that I had to start using my wand of healing more, which is why I only had 7 MP left when I escaped.

I also didn't have much luck with resistances. By the time I found gold dragon hide, I was steps from the Orb. There was a gold dragon on Vaults:8 that left a corpse, but a nearby lich was inconsiderate enough to animate it before I could see if it'd give me a hide. I had to keep swapping around my rings to make it through Zot.

Anyway, for the interested, here's my abbreviated morgue:

Boy, no kidding. The only time I've died playing this is when I've made dumb mistakes. Berserk and magic resist completely let you wipe out instant-death mobs like no one's business.

I dunno how it'd work towards the end of the game though. Learning skills (find traps) takes so slow it just ain't happening and I gather having lots of powerful artifacts is important but they just can't wear anything.

Yeah, troll berserkers can pretty much rip through the early game. Later on, though, their advantages aren't quite so pronounced, their increased food consumption becomes more of an issue, and their lack of armor and slow skill growth starts to be more painful.

I'll go ahead and add a naga warper to the queue for you.

Are you going to be using it for the LP? It's just... 0.6 is considerably harder than 0.5, and I'd like to see you win this...

I just read the release notes and I'm very optimistic about half of it. I've been wishing for a god that suited a stalker and I'm sure with three new gods one of them has to be better than the rest.
I read the reasons for axing divination a while ago, and I'm ok with it. I might miss the hand crossbows though.
This seems to be a significant enough update to justify having multiple versions on one computer.

EDIT: This is the first character I tried. I had just caused a (not small) snake to flee from low hp and I wanted to find a secure location to heal:

Message History

The kobold throws an exploding dart. The exploding dart hits you!
The exploding dart explodes!

You could see a kobold.

Vanquished Creatures
3 giant bats (D:1)
2 giant cockroaches (D:1)
A goblin (D:1)
A kobold (D:1)
2 rats (D:1)
A small snake (D:1)
10 creatures vanquished.

Vanquished Creatures (others)
A rat (D:1)
1 creature vanquished.

Grand Total: 11 creatures vanquished

Notes
Turn | Place | Note
--------------------------------------------------------------
0 | D:1 | Begin, the Kenku Fighter, began the quest for the Orb.
0 | D:1 | Reached XP level 1. HP: 13/13 MP: 0/0
46 | D:1 | Reached XP level 2. HP: 15/18 MP: 1/1
70 | D:1 | Killed from afar by a kobold

That map up there is all I had explored, and it's actually a little too big since it shows what I saw the turn I died.
If at first you don't succeed, die, die again.

Thanks for the naga warper queue thing. And yeah, troll berserkers could definitely be a problem later on, what with no armor, but they're fun for a new player since you get to learn the mistakes for new places firsthand! I lost my second one to poison in the Snake Pit. Now I know that you stay the hell away from the Snake Pit unless you resist poison!

EDIT: Oh, naga warpers have a weapon choice. I say spears.

The slow god is pretty interesting so far. My Deep Dwarf Artificer has to be played a bit slowly anyway and I've been amassing throwables so I don't mind yet that I can't run away.
It's pretty cool that the ability to make any armour ponderous converts it into an artifact with all the +s and abilities it had before.
It turns out that my earlier demise was just a bit of bad luck combined with a variation on the standard "Kobold with darts of flame on lvl1". I found a stack of exploding darts later on and they are flat out amazing.

Just noticed this one after playing my Sludge Elf a bit.

Quote:
* Fulsome Distillation depends only on corpse type - RNG and rotting influence
has been removed. Also doesn't prompt when only one corpse present.
Guess I can stop carting corpses around till they rot now.

Also, it's not listed in the patch notes, but I swear I auto IDed a strong poison potion and degeneration potion when I Distilled them. Maybe as a direct result of the above change?

You know what's awesome?

Spriggans are awesome. But we already knew that.

Nemelex Xobeh is awesome, especially when you, as a spriggan, sacrifice a bunch of useless meat rations to him and get a deck of wonders in return, to be followed by two more decks of wonders because you gave him some more useless scrolls and potions.

Drawing approximately seven Experience cards from said decks, gaining seven levels instantly? It need not be said that this is awesome, nor need this be said about having five-digit Exp. pool counts so early in the game.

Drawing the Sage card and feeling studious about Spellcasting twice? Taking advantage of this to gain enough ranks in Spellcasting to immediately start casting level 2 spells with no hunger cost, as a spriggan, even though I had not previously cast any spells? And also feeling studious about Fighting at another instance? I'll let you guess what, exactly, that is.

And finally, it must also be said that the following message buffer in the Orcish Mines is, yes, awesome:

You kill the orc!

You open the orc warrior like a pillowcase!!!
You kill the orc warrior!
Things that are here:
an orcish great mace; an orcish chain mail; an orc corpse
The orc fails to defend itself! You open the orc like a pillowcase!!!
You kill the orc!
Things that are here:
a runed orcish hand axe; an orc corpse
The orc fails to defend itself! You open the orc like a pillowcase!!!
You kill the orc!
If I really, really want to win, I think Deep Elf Wizard of Sif Muna is still my combo of choice, but dang if Spriggan Artificer of Nemelex Xobeh isn't fun.

Less awesome: drawing the Wild Magic card, Glowing as a result, and getting the shoutitis mutation. But oh well.

I know it's nit-picky, but I really dislike the leading underscore in 0.6's message window.

Does anyone know how to turn it off?

Well, this isn't the same thing, but if you want messages to clear off the screen when they're no longer pertinent to the current turn (like they did in 0.5), you can find the line in the settings/init.txt file that says

Code:
# clear_messages = true
and remove the #. This is something I have done myself.

You draw a card... it is Torment. The kraken convulses! Your body is wracked with pain!
Nemelex Xobeh gives you a gift!

Hm. I'm in no danger; the kraken can't get to me. Perhaps I'll use-ID this new deck now.

You draw a card... it is Wild Magic.
This is a legendary deck of wonders {god gift}.
You are blasted with searing flames!
You die...

...

I had 38 HP left. The chances of dying there had to be under 1% or something, especially since that rolled absurdly high on damage. Okay, RNG. You have made your presence known.

Spriggans are tiny little fey murderers that can outrun half the monsters in the game and can start ridiculous stab chains. Oh, and they can blow things up too!

My two top scoring games have all been Spriggans because I can't learn anything more than kiting and stabbing things and the idea of ponderous armor is like poison to me.

Finally, I'd like to note that the Singing Sword is the best unrandart ever. And if you're a Spriggan Assassin you should wield it and pretend to be Scout.

Default Meet the new LPer, same as the old LPer

As is painfully obvious from the tumbleweeds rolling through here, the combination of diminishing free gaming time and the hassles of picture hosting logistics have put paid to my ambitions for this thread, and I am joining the great pile of LP burnouts.

Fortunately, dtsund has no such issues, and has volunteered to take over the LP, guiding us into the later portions of the game and also the changes introduced in the last couple of versions.

Anyway, sorry for leaving this thread in the lurch. I hope you enjoyed the first dozen episodes, and please to look forward to dtsund's coming reign of terror.

Take it away, dtsund!
