Default Avengers: Endgame UNMARKED SPOILERS (starting now)

As more concrete info trickles out, I'm less and less sure what people who care about spoilers will not want to see. So, I've just preemptively made this thread so that people who are spoiler sensitive won't accidentally see it by making a blind guess, and people who aren't spoiler sensitive can just talk about whatever.

Anyway . . .

This has lowered my expectations about having much development there will be her in the movie.

In a way, this approach of first introducing a character before you really have any idea who they are is extremely accurate to the legacy of event comics! It reminds of, say, Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman in the original Secret Wars mini.

Hopefully it’s not worse than her wearing more makeup in the early scenes. Also:

Thankfully, McFeely explained that Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were on set when filming with Larson’s Captain Marvel started. “They watched their character start with someone else and we certainly got their blessing,” he said.

Oh yeah I don't expect it to be terrible, and I'm sure they made the Captain Marvel movie in a way that will synch up with whatever the filmed first in Endgame.

I just thought it was funny/interesting.

Yeah, I didn’t realize that they were filmed out of order. I wonder if Ant Man & The Wasp was filmed after Endgame as well.

They were in production at the same time but Ant-Man was finished faster.

Was anyone else surprised by the sheer volume of Nic Cage in this movie? I mean, don't get me wrong, I love me some Nic Cage, but that scene of four watchers, all of whom were played by Nic Cage arguing among themselves while watching Ghost Rider (Also Nic Cage) fight Thanos was just a bit much.

Was really surprised by the choice to make this one a Musical, but not nearly as surprised as I was by the reveal that the big show-stopper in the third act was Diegetic. At first I was like "Whaaat" but upon reflection, it was actually a really clever way to reveal just how aware Thanos was of the heroes actions, to the point where he could plot out the other half of a duet to match their own.

Finally, I know that there's no *RIGHT* way to undo a big huge tragedy like the one in infinity war, but having all the supposedly killed characters just jump out from behind various objects shouting "AHA I FOOLED YOU, I WAS HIDING BEHIND THIS COUCH/BUSH/DESK/END TABLE/TREE THE WHOLE TIME! I AM THE BEST AT HIDE AND SEEK" was a remarkably poor choice.

One last note. I've always been pretty EH on all things shipping, but the ending scene where the entire assembled cast shouted in perfect unison "NOW WE WILL ALL GO AROUND THE ROOM KISSING ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY, UNTIL EVERYBODY HAS BEEN KISSED BY EVERYBODY!" was a decent enough way to make sure everybody got to see their preferred pairing.

Or it would have been, if the tone hadn't then turned really dark as they all continued "EXCEPT FALCON. NOBODY WILL KISS FALCON! NOBODY!"

And then the entire scene just played out in the background while the camera centered on Falcon, hunched over at the bar, slowly falling deeper and deeper into despair?

It just kinda sucked the joy out of what could have been a fun moment, you know?

Beat - thank you for transcribing all of that. There's so much in this movie that I had forgotten large swathes of it.

(Also, FYI, there's apparently a picture out there that spoils a major plot point. I'm going to stay out of this thread and I'm avoiding a few places that would be likely to spoil it.)

real talk: that one clip the officially released where the avengers are like "uh so where have you been carol" and she's all "there are lots of planets in the universe and very few of them have like twenty superbeings to defend them" is funny because none of the avengers follow it up with "...so you didn't hear about the guy going from planet to planet, murdering half the population of each"

I can't believe that all of this time Thanos had been wearing a mask and that under the mask was none other than

Default SPOILERZ

Man, that part where Spider-Man randomly came back from the dead in the first five minutes by exploding out of a giant spider corpse was really fucked up. And that somehow gave him "natural" wrist webs like the Raimi flicks.

I mean, it was nice of the MCU to bring him back now so he could ACTUALLY BE IN THE FILM instead of just being randomly written back into existence by the creepy CGI Stan Lee in the afterlife during the seventeenth credits scene like almost everyone else who died was, but goddamn. Did we really need that Spider-Man scene snipped from the comics and repurposed in the MCU?

Also I know that Disney's excited to have the X-Men and Fantastic Four under their wing, but revealing that Rocket Raccoon was actually just what Wolverine looks like after going without shaving for a week and that Thanos is actually just an extra grumpy Thing who shriveled up after staying in the pool for too long was a real stretch, even for Marvel. And Toad is now a girl and on the X-Men's side; trying to milk the fans of Tsuyu Asui much, Disney? I'm really surprised that lesbian makeout scene between her and Peppi Bow didn't bump the rating up to an R; so much tongue.

By the way, if you didn't guess from that last sentence, Star Wars is part of the MCU canon now. Best scene in the movie was when Nick Fury (who came back from the dead in the opening credits by sheer force of Samuel L. Jackson saying "Fuck Nick Fury dying") teams up with Mace Windu (who's also not dead) and John Shaft (Shaft is also MCU canon now) and the trio, all played by Samuel L. Jackson, slaughter an entire army of Sentinels, Skrulls, AT-STs, and Darth Vader clones on their own.

That duel scene with Deadpool admittedly wasn't quite as cool as I'd hoped it would be. He pretty much immediately gets disarmed (literally) by Windu, says "Mace Windu please help me I have no arms" before getting a Jango Shave, then Mace just kinda flips out when the guy won't shut up despite being decapitated and chops him up so much with his lightsaber that he's eventually reduced to a pile of smoldering ashes.

Deadpool, being Deadpool, survives this and continues to talk as a pile of ashes. A frustrated Windu responds by having BB-8 Roomba up The Merc With A Mouth's ashen remains. I take it back, the Deadpool duel was perfect.

It was an amazing film; 10/10.

All I know is that I will never get back that half-hour I spent watching a Muppet General Leia talk to Bruce Banner (Who, I should add, has made up for his loss of Hulk powers by becoming the MCU's Doctor Octopus) about how Ben Solo's real father was actually Severus Snape (also a Muppet (also Harry Potter is MCU canon somehow)) and how maybe that's why he became Kylo Ren.

I mean, geez, 25 of those minutes were spent watching a Leia puppet and Brucetopus argue about whether that makes Ben a Half-Blood-Half-Force Prince or a Quarter-Blood-1/8th-Force Prince. And this scene is set on the Planet Koozebane during mating season, so there's constant cries of "Galley-O!" and "Hoop! Hoop!" and explosions and newborn Koozebanian cheeping in the background.

Here's a text summary.

Honestly I was hoping for more based on the way people are talking about the leak.

Yeah. No post-credits scene.

Also there are very detailed summaries now.

I love that people who haven't seen the movie are upset about how Captain America's story is character assassination.

Black Widow’s still getting a movie, right? I guess it’ll be about a clone or something? Both soul stone deaths fell flat because I’m like, well, they’ve got sequels in the works. But actually the deaths are kind of sticking?

I like that the time travel here wasn’t about negating timelines but also shouldn’t Captain America have grown old in a different timeline? (Went to the bathroom when Tilda was explaining things)

Anyway, I liked this!!

I didn't quite get every last item on my wishlist, but what I did get was just as good or better. Some quick thoughts before I go chug a gallon of coffee to replace all the liquids and caffeine I didn't have today:

- Thanos revealing he destroyed the Stones, his sudden beheading and "Five Years Later" were a trio of great, shocking moments in a row.

- Speaking of Five Years Later, I was so sure they'd somehow undo that and return us to the time of the end of Infinity War. But no! Now the MCU is set in like 2023, I guess. That's weird!

- Loved everything about Cap and Tony's reunion -- Tony's bitter recriminations of him to the point of losing consciousness, and their eventual reconciliation.

- I'm so confused about the rules of time travel. Do we now have a version of Loki on the loose somewhere out there with the Tesseract, or is that a parallel timeline or what? Or did it get undone by Cap returning the Stones to their proper places in history? I liked how betrayed Rhodey and Scott felt by Hollywood time travel. "Die Hard! Wait, that's not one."

- So many fun situations and cameos involved in the time heist. Getting to see Alexander Pierce, the Ancient One, Sitwell, Rumlow, etc. etc. etc. was a delight. I loved the replay of Cap's Winter Soldier elevator scene. "Hail Hydra." Hah!

- Nat's death was tragic but I feel like they went one too many turns with her and Hawkeye trying to stop each other from going over the cliff? Like I get that they were both desperate but it felt slightly silly at a point.

- Past Thanos becoming aware of his future victory and the Avengers' attempts to undo it was a brilliant twist, and his sudden attack on Avengers HQ was truly alarming. What followed was the biggest and most chaotic battle I've ever seen in a movie.

- AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

- CAP IS WORTHY!!

- "She has help." A-FORCE, BASICALLY!!!

- So good. I got a little teary when Quill and Gamora "reunited", and then I was a complete sobbing mess for everything having to do with Tony's death and Cap's... life. Just so beautiful and perfect.

There was a lot to absorb here, so I'm definitely going to be seeing this movie again next week before I can think about where to rank it in the MCU canon. It's up there, though, that's for sure.
