Default Detective Pikachu: The Movie?

A Pokemon live action movie is happening at Legendary Pictures, aka the Warcraft folks. They decided to go with Detective Pikachu.

I have to admit, if I were given the choice of which stupid Pokemon movie to make, Detective Pikachu would be near the top.

Default I forgot there was a forum for movie shit

They also did Godzilla 2014 and I imagine Nintendo/TPCi will be very strict about the quality so my heart is full of trust right now.

I feel like Detective Pikachu should be inserted into other movies, in the style of Quantum Leap.

I want them to just dig up an unused film noir script from the 50s and replace the main character with Pikachu.

Plot choice regardless, Legendary cannot skimp on the effects here. Pokemon permeate their settings.

I really, really, really hope they use the original Pikachu voice rather than recasting it.

I'm going to be very interested in seeing how Legendary renders Pokemon in this. TPCi has a very specific...level of reality that Pokemon have never passed, whether they're in Pokken Tournament or live-action commercials. Will it be more of the same, or will Legendary get to flex their creativity a little? I can't see them going full "realism" because those takes on Pokemon always strip some of what makes Pokemon designs so iconic, but...

Why would you hope for that? This Pikachu isn't even voiced by Ikue Ohtani. Detective Pikachu's thing is that he can speak human language. Of course he's going to be getting a voice actor who can speak English.

But that's lame and dumb and was lame and dumb when Japan did it. It'd be funnier/more entertaining if people somehow understood the Pikachu that can only speak by repeating part of its name.

Then half of the movie's dialogue goes like this:

"Pikaaaa! Pi pi pika chuuuuuuuu!"
"What's that, Detective Pikachu? You're saying the killer escaped through the window?"

Isn't the kid's ability to hear Detective Pikachu's "voice" part of the plot?

Not even Bulbapedia has a summary of what happens in the game. That is weird, considering how comprehensive Pokemon fans usually are about archiving random information

Let me tell you.

In the game, that Detective Pikachu only ever talks to the dumb kid, and other Pokemon. He never talks to other humans. He always enlists the dumb kid to do it.

So basically Detective Pikachu is like Detective Conan if Conan was an electric rat that only the Moores understood?

Who's writing this movie?

Goddamn Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch, apparently.

It's worth noting that Hirsch and Perlman are only in talks to write for the new movie. Who knows if either of them will accept. But if they do... Hoh, man.

I tell ya what, there's been some talk about Danny DeVito playing Detective Pikachu, but I personally would not mind it a bit if Alex Hirsch played him, using the Grunkle Stan voice.

It just occurred to me that Stan brought a video camera to his niece's performance presumably for making bootleg recordings.

Either that, or he always has a camera on him just to surreptitiously tape children fighting. But that's getting off-topic.

So, does anyone know the basic plot of Detective Pikachu? Yeah, yeah, kid finds super-smart pikachu he can talk to, but what's the rest of the story?

I am now imagining Pikachu saying "Oops! I dropped my monster condom that I use for my magnum dong," and by god, I hope he gets the role so someone on Youtube/Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook/Reddit/whatthefuckever does combines the two so we can have this.

Please, 2016. We've had a shitty year. Please, allow us this.

Courtesy of a random Kotaku article (seriously why is there nothing on Bulbapedia for this game):

Quote:
Detective Pikachu is the story of Tim Goodman, a young man who heads to Rhyme City in search of his missing father. Shortly after his arrival, he comes across Detective Pikachu—that is to say a pikachu in a deerstalker cap—and the two are thrust into an adventure to catch a thief and return a young girl’s stolen necklace.

[...]

The game itself is basically three lengthy multi-part puzzles. The first uses the stolen necklace scenario to introduce the pair and the game flow, while the second and third follow them as they work to track down Tim’s father.

[...]

As the first chunk of an episodic title, Detective Pikachu does little beyond introducing the characters and building up the mystery surrounding Tim’s father. Over the game’s six hours, little is revealed and you are left with far more questions than answers.

[...]

Detective Pikachu is easily the most entertaining part of the game. With his deep voice and often grimacing face, he seems more like an old man trapped in a pikachu’s body than any of the numerous pikachu we have encountered before. He drinks coffee, has an intellect capable of solving mysteries, and even hits on every pretty woman he sees.

Much of the game’s best humor comes from how human Detective Pikachu is and, in contrast, how horribly inept he is at being a pikachu. In a world where pretty much every pokémon is trained to fight in some form or fashion, it’s almost a shock (forgive the pun) to see a pikachu that can’t do a thunderbolt on command. Of course, he’s not afraid to play the role of “normal cute pikachu” if it gets him what he wants, especially in the women and food departments.

Oh wow, that's pretty Grunkle Stan-ish. No idea why Detective Pikachu likes hitting on human women, though, that seems kinda sketchy. (Maybe he used to be a human?)

Also, I'm glad to see that a dad features so heavily in the plot. I hope Alex Hirsch does get the job, just so I can finally discover the answer to the real mystery of Gravity Falls, namely: what does Hirsch have against dads?
