I binged this season over the last weekend and came away impressed on many levels but utterly underwhelmed by the conclusion of the time loop for mostly the same reasons that Sensenic mentioned.

I thought about what might have served it better and perhaps appeased me more. The conclusion I came to was that it would've been more satisfying to have the season staged like the TNG episode Cause and Effect. Run us through the loop at least three times. Play the first loop straight and end with failure. The second time through perhaps have the characters more aware of what is going on - but they still fail. Third time let us see what actually changes to break the loop. To keep it from being stale you can shorthand repeated scenes or showcase the same events from different perspectives as well as introduce minor variations that do or don't have butterfly effect consequences.

Whatever, I'm daydreaming, but at least I'm doing it mildly out loud. As it stands, without knowing why this time is different it just rings hollow.

Default Welcome to Season 7, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Apparently this got renewed for a seventh season despite the sixth not having aired yet???

‘Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D’ Renewed For Season 7 By ABC

I was pretty sure season 5 was going to be the last, and then I was SUPER sure season 6 would be. But it turns out this show is unkillable?

I can't wait to see how the team deals with the fallout from Infinity War and/or Endgame!! (answer: they won't, the writers had no idea what was going to happen and weren't about to dust half their cast anyway)

I’m still only midway through season 5, and was kind of under the impression that there wasn’t going to be a season 6!

And I’m also increasingly of the opinion that this show exists in its own separate timeline that is coincidentally similar to the MCU.

There's going to be a season seven, Octobro! This show will outlive us all.

I am surprised and pleased!

I want to see how they inexplicably bring Ward back every year!

I watched it! No Ward, but pretty much everyone else in interesting new situations. Interested to see where they go with this.

MAY: remember that time half the world died

MACK: not really

MAY: yeah me neither

Apparently the producers are saying this somehow all takes place pre-Snap, despite the events of Infinity War (which last about a day and a half, two days at the outside) having already begun as of the end of S5, and S6 taking place a year later.

Quote:
“And I live in a world where there's enough Time Lords and Chronicoms that live in the internet that they'll figure it out and explain it back to us,” added Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb. “It does work – you just have to figure it out.”
I love that they're crowdsourcing the explanation for their own timeline shenanigans

They’re not out of the loop at all... in fact, they’re once again setting the stage for, or standing to react to, the upcoming MCU picture... it’s all Mysterio...

(I have never seen an episode of this television program)

It’s probably saying something that it took me until she explicitly explained it in the middle of season 5 to figure out how Yo-yos power worked.

Honestly I'm fine with them ignoring/handwaving the snap. A big reason I hate crossover events in *actual* comics is the way they force other ongoing stories by different creative teams off track in order to acknowledge them. If the SHIELD writers had a good idea to integrate it, great, but if not... whatever, just do your own thing, it's fine. The connection between SHIELD and the MCU has always been tenuous at best.

Honestly, this is pretty much the attitude Loeb had to writing his own comics, so...

I really liked this episode. They set up two different storylines that I'm interested in, and I like how this show puts familiar characters into new contexts and has fun with it.

And there's a new bunch of SHIELD redshirts who the bad guys can off to prove how dangerous they are...

I realized that I completely forgot to watch Friday's episode of Agents of Franchise-Unaffiliated Superhero Universe so I got caught up tonight. It was pretty good! I liked it more than last week's, anyway.

So does Fitz still need to go to the Lighthouse in the future to do season 5 business? I thought we took care of that. Or, oh! It's that he doesn't know that yet, right? Okay.

I liked the detail of not-Coulson mispronouncing "Dana". Helps sell the idea that he's not from around here more than the expository dialogue designed to do that. Kind of silly that his large friend would think "Coulson" is a word and not a name from context, though.

It's always nice to see May karate some fools, and the thinking with portals was a nice touch.

Looking forward to this week's now!

I think he has either already done that or he won't be doing that for a very, very long time.

Huh? As far as he knows he needs to freeze himself for 70 years to save the world. I really don't know how they're going to resolve that.

Oh hey, they found some more dark, cramped, windowless sets to film in.

I think you're right but time travel and time loop nonsense make figuring out causality a giant Earthskull-splitting headache. Especially now that they have actually broken the time loop.

I am tempted to make a really long post trying to give a synopsis of what happened last season and explain the temporal shenanigans but I don't know if anyone is interested in that at all.

Third!

Also, my personal theory on the "freezing" time travel nonsense: Because the loop is broken, there's no "route" to the bad future. If he froze himself for however many years now, he'd just wake up in a future where the Earth was complete. They're basically in another timeline now, full stop.

Yeah, pretty sure that's the whole point of Jemma &co trying to go rescue him. They're already past the point where Earth was gonna be broke and it's not, in this timeline.
