Yeah, the story of Dark Phoenix is essentially a prolonged metal raping of Jean by Mastermind with her going off the deep end when the illusion comes to light. It's an omega level mutant PTSD freakout.

I think that this is not wrong, but it also makes the source material sound a lot . . . darker than it is in practice. It's a long form story over like 40 issues with a lot of tonal incongruities, and it's incredibly goofy in its approach to these themes.

The ending is unhappy, but stylistically it's coming from a kind of loosey-goosey place that predates the grim'n'gritty ("edgelord") approach to super heroes.

Probably didn't help that they used the storyline to launch the Dazzler on top of everything else.

I mean, even if you stick to the core elements of the Dark Phoenix story, Mastermind's period drama cosplay first approach to brainwashing is very goofy 70s Marvel. (I know the story edges into the early 80s, but stylistically....) And if you expand things to include the early parts of the story, you have the infamously nonsensical Erik the Red business, when Claremont was still finding his footing as a writer.

I'm not even saying that this is bad necessarily (although I do think Dark Phoenix is tremendously overrated in the context of Claremont's 20 year run on the X-Men), just that if someone is looking to identify a set of X-Men comics that are grim and gritty edgelord stuff (and there's a lot of it), this ain't it.

This show is back and it’s so good. Specifically just in terms of representation, love to see myself reflected with all the garish hair color choices.

Skyler Samuels actually appeared to me in a hair-color related prophetic dream a few weeks ago. I was going to bleach my hair then we were called away to wait in line. We were behind someone who seemed to have trouble standing up and walking but it didn’t matter because the line stopped anyway. (there is such a dream in this episode: the bleach blonde murder twink’s sister dreams about his new hair, lmao)

There’s a decent chunk of the Dark Phoenix Saga that’s not aged well in the wisdom of hindsight, but there’s also a whole lot of capital G-Good Comic Bookery going on as well that’s decent enough to make sure it’s not likely to be dethroned as one of the All Time Best X-Men stories.

It’s not impossible that the movie could focus on the good and fix the bad but given the average for how these movies handle things... ehh...

Hearing rumors on Twitter that Dark Phoenix has just been pushed back to June 2019, but I'm not seeing actual articles yet.

There are a lot of articles now, also noting that they're releasing a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 in December and pushing the eternally delayed Gambit movie back into 2020 (where it will presumably never happen because of Disney stuff).

On one hand, this is another delay. On the other hand, February tends to be a dumping ground and June is where you put something that you think might be successful.

On the other other hand, they're doing this a few days after the first trailer, which is kind of hilarious.

What I’m curious about: will J-Law don full body Mystique make-up? I suspect not, which is good, because she hates it and it looks bad on her. Also, her Mystique haircut’s better now... congrats.

(still would of course prefer R-Rom, but that’s not gonna happen)

Ol’ Katniss herself, Jennifer Lawrence

Unless, of course, you mean “What has Rebecca Romijn-Stamos been up to lately” and phrased it oddly, in which case her most recent role was that of Lois Lane in the direct-to-video adaptations of Death of Superman, and the upcoming Reign of the Supermen.

No. I meant who would be considered a "young(er) Rebecca Romijn" (à la the five stages of the actor as stated by Ricardo Montalbán).

I think New Mutants will eventually get cancelled. I'm surprised Dark Phoenix didn't too.

Got announced a year or two ago but that's all they've said about it was that it was greenlit.

Don't worry. This is just a marketing ploy so that, three months from now, they can rebrand the X-Men as "Mutants Classic".

It's not "New" as in "Newly born", but as in "New 3DS".

Don't worry, Fox will continue the Mutant business by leveraging its installed base. These Mutants will totally not be phased out next fiscal year by, say, the MCU.

apparently they got some marketing data that not enough people understood that dark phoenix was an x-men movie

"uhhhh remember when patrick stewart and hugh jackman were in these? please coast on those warm feelings to also see this"
