Carrie Fischer's footage is unused stuff from previous movies, not something she filmed for this movie.

Im sure Disney secured the likeness of Carrie Fischer before she died. They could just do what they did with Tarkin in Rogue One or Clu in Tron Legacy

That's really interesting and now I'm even more curious to see this!

She was CGI'd in Rogue One too and both of them were creepy as hell.

They said that all footage of her would be scenes that were cut from TFA, and they specified that they wouldn’t use a CGI model of her.

Whatever they do with this old footage of the late and great Carrie Fisher, I hope they'll give General Leia the proper sendoff from the series that she deserves. Like, it's fine if they want to use a soundalike for the CGI cartoons or whatever (that's what they usually do with those anyway), but I'm not sure I could bear to see another Bad Graphics Leia in another live action movie.

There’s a thread on Resetera about people’s favorite Star Wars movie, and The Last Jedi is in a solid second place in the poll (following ESB). The comments from people who have spent the last two years shouting about how it’s a terrible movie and everyone hates it are delightful.

They have said they were not going that route, though I'd imagine there's some back-of-the-head double shots padding things out.

"And everything's erupting"

I mean, compared to many of the prequel set-piece fights (esp ep3), that fan version is still pretty dang grounded. It still feels out of place for ep4 because it does things you couldn't with the editing tools of the day, and yeah it's pretty indulgent, but it ain't bad.

The big one being that the lightsabres couldn't touch when filming the original film, which puts what they achieved into perspective. It could've been a lot more impressive if they hadn't tried to do the lightsabre effect in shot.

Even so, this goes too far, it doesn't belong in this film. It doesn't belong in the original trilogy, even.

It's fun, and impressively done, but is at odds with the feeling of the original scene in a lot of ways.

As a continuation of the Episode III duel, it's OK, but ANH isn't a movie designed to carry that thematic weight, because none of it existed when it was made, and simply plopping it in there doesn't work unless you have that fight firmly in mind (especially the callback quotes to the Sith duel, which really don't work).

The makers specifically reference Vader as seen at the end of Rogue One, which leads directly into ANH. And, yes, for all of us very old people it's jarring but for kids who are coming from the prequels and rogue one to the original trilogy the jar is with the original films not anything else.

I think it was a neat attempt to bring the scene into alignment with the series as it exists now.

And of course you couldn't just drop it in to the ANH without many other edits and such to that film.

Like I said, it's fun. (And frankly, Rogue One Vader, while ALSO fun, was ALSO jarring)

Vanity Fair has an article on IX that is full of really great pictures. I wasn't on-board with the teaser, but these are more exciting. Looking forward to actually reading the article sometime soon.

From the article

Quote:
Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey battle it out with lightsabers in a stormy confrontation. Their Force-connection—what Driver calls their “maybe-bond”—will turn out to run even deeper than previously revealed.
*sigh!* I hope it's just the marketing hype hinting at a twist that isn't there and they're not planning to make them cousins or something.

I liked that article a lot, and I have pretty good optimism for how this trilogy will finish. Personally, I'm excited for this film to finally explore the background of the First Order, as my personal only real gripe with the new trilogy is how sparse they've been on the space politics - for good, understandable reasons, as I've always said - so I'm hoping we get a little bit of that here.

Given the fact that a significant percentage of smooching couples in the Star Wars universe ended up being siblings, this doesn't assuage my fears.
