Default Sodastreamin'

This isn't in the Soft Drink thread because it is more about the device and less about brand name soda.

So we weighed the pros and cons about getting a Sodastream, because while we've dramatically reduced the amount of bottled/canned sodas we drink, we still plow through the seltzer like there's no tomorrow. We're typically going through at least one case of things like Seagram's Lemon-Lime per week, and several of the liter sized bottles intended for mixers in between. We had a Sodastream on the wedding registry, but a coupon came in the mail for Bed Bath & Beyond that got us 20% off any one item, so we bit the bullet while buying a new pillow and are now homebrewing our own soft drinks.

We figure the big pluses are never running out of soda, and dramatically reducing the amount of waste that goes into the recycling bin. Average costs say that we'll have made up the cost of the machine after about a month and a half, considering how much bottled/canned seltzer we buy.

And the results are really good! Making a batch just tastes like regular seltzer, and the DIY nature is making us want to play around with flavors (obviously we could make whatever flavors we want with bottled seltzer but it's more fun when you get to play with a farting machine).

I know Red Hedgehog has one, does anybody else? Does anybody want one (and you should because it's awesome)? What flavors do you mix up?

My in-laws have been Rocking the Penguin™ for about a year now. They mostly mix the seltzer with cranberry juice and vodka, although when we take the kid over they enjoy mixing up orange juice and seltzer for him.

I looked at the numbers, and we'd have to buy 408 cans of seltzer water to make up the initial purchase of a SodaStream based on the price of Safeway brand around here. Which is almost too bad, because a SodaStream would be kinda cool.

As for making your own soda, at the very least you have to start here.

We got a couple of different "official" flavors, like the diet Dr Pepper clone and some lemon-lime seltzer flavor. I'll probably stick with just adding a little lemon juice to mine, as while the Dr Pepper isn't dreadful, it's like someone mixed real Dr Pepper with store brand diet cola. It has that weird, cheap-aspartame-y tang.

the *official* sodastream root beer I tried was so lousy it kinda soured me on the whole concept of the device, but coming up with my own flavor concoctions sounds a little bit exciting.

The kit comes with a big sample case of trial flavors and dang me if the diet pink grapefruit isn't an instant classic.

My fiance pretty much only likes unflavored seltzer, so except for one party where we made white wine spritzers, that's all we make (Beer is the only carbonated beverage I like aside from the very occasional specialty soda).

I gave it to her as a... birthday? Channukah? gift. It did take about 4 months to start saving her money, but man does it ever now.

And the best part is that she gets exactly the amount of carbonation she wants which she can't get with store brands.

We have one of these at the office and almost nobody messes with the thing. There's just this weird uneasiness about having a hand in making your own soda. It just seems like something that could go wrong, though I'm unsure precisely why.

Whoops, we got one anyway.

Turns out Rhombus is terrified of it. More so than anything else she has been afraid of in her whole doggie life.

Whatever pooch, we're making seltzer water and it's great.

I always wondered what Americans were talking about when they talked about seltzer and now I know. They're talking about soda water. Anyway, I got one of these for my birthday last year and now I only drink still water when the canister runs out. It's probably not healthy, but it's pretty great anyway.

As long as you're not adding syrup to it, it's simply water with some CO2 added, which is the same as drinking regular water.

You can't honestly be losing weight with a soda fountain in your chambers.

Again, as long as it's just water, that's fine. Or diet soda, which has other negative side effects if you drink too much of it (like causing heart problems), but weight gain isn't one of them. And that information comes straight from my doctor, so nyah.

So I've been thinking of getting one of these things, or at least putting one on my Amazon wish list for birthday times. What the heck model should I get? Does it matter?

We saw some at the Home Outfitters the other day, including some odd choices of drink mix: Kool-Aid flavors and Country Time lemonade.

So... how is carbonated Kool-Aid or Country Time? I'm kind of curious.

Drinks that normally wouldn't be carbonated, like lemonade and iced tea, are incredibly weird with bubbles. However, getting those Mio-esque bottles of Kool-Aid concentrate squirts makes for the best orange and grape sodas ever. Cherry is good, too. Mio also makes an energy drink that tastes exactly like Red Bull but is a bright, flourescent radioactive green and practically screams to be Sodastreamed.

This is unacceptable. Too long have we toiled in a world without carbonated cocoa, carbonated smoothies and frappes, carbonated soaps, shampoos, and baths, carbonated lava lamps, carbonated steel, carbonated paints and glues, foreverially permanently carbonizedated blood.

I would like some input on this, as well, two years later. Kishi's tired of hauling out my glass liter bottles; they're heavy for a cat.

It doesn't matter, they all use the same equipment. A cheaper model has served me well for years.

Yeah, we have an old one and I haven't noticed any real difference from the newer ones. Love this thing.

We got one for a wedding gift, but I almost certainly would have bought one anyway. It's very much worthwhile.

You people are adorable with your Sodastreams. MY Sodastream is a 5 gallon keg attached to a 10 lb CO2 cylinder. And while I don't ever put anything that isn't beer in there, I totally could fill with with 5 gallons of iced tea if I wanted to.
