Default On tonight's panel: Comic Book News

We'll, I didn't want to start this thread on a bummer note, but that's just what it is.
William Messner-Loebs is currently homeless.

The good news is that He's on his way to living in a home again, but the dude needs work. He still seems to be a great artist so I hope he gets it.

Here's a link to the original story by a local news station, for anyone who'd want that without having to go through Bleeding Cool's aggregation/summary article (that site always loads terribly for me).

Jesus, he's 69 years old and has to work part time out of Panera while living out of his car. If he wants a job drawing comics again I hope he can get it because that's the hellworld we live in, but also I wish we had a society where a 69 year old man wouldn't have to be in this situation to begin with....

Poor guy. Its super sad.

I had no idea he was credited on The Maxx, I always thought that was purely a Sam Kieth joint.

It was Keith's passion project, but yeah Messner-Loebs scripted frequently and after the major time jump Alan Moore even did an issue setting things up. (If I recall, Keith didn't seem very satisfied with Moore's issue and undid a lot of Moore's major revelations... But maybe I don't recall, because I haven't read an issue since I was picking up the floppies.)

Anyone familiar with The Maxx through the MTV cartoon mostly knows the Messner-Loebs scripted era. My memory is that the Kieth only later issues were increasingly experimental and shifted to a kind of focus on anthology stories about abusive relationships, with fewer explicit superhero/fantasy elements.

I like both versions of the comic, but yeah, that's my big exposure to Messner-Loebs.

Maybe I just don't know the comic industry or how "work" works, but it feels like it can't be too hard to "give" him work, right? I mean, DC (and to a lesser extent Marvel) do anthology issues and specials often enough that they could give him a six page story with enough frequency that at least it might help him out a bit. That said, I could just be naive in that regard.

I'm skeptical that either ofthe big two would want to get in the habit of making work for former employees in dire straits. There are going to be more and more of them as time goes on. They chewed up and spit out a lot of people over the years.

Yeah. We are going to watch elder homelessness spike to pre-New Deal levels over the coming decades unless we create a new support regime

Just wanted to say: that title is the best comic book news pun name I've heard since "Issue at Hand."

On the lighter side, Rob Liefield drew this.

Gerard Jones was just sentenced to six years in prison for possession of child pornography.

I actually missed that this was a thing when he was caught a year and a half ago, but I was never actually particularly familiar with his work except that he did a lot of Green Lantern stuff in the late 80's/early 90's.

Apparently goobergrump has come to comics now? Entitled white shitheads just won't stop, will they? Has anyone here experienced any of this firsthand, and has it reached the heights of vitriol that its gaming counterpart did?

Tucker Stone wrote a brief albeit insightful piece about it on TCJ.

I assumed this was a resurgence of something that's been going on for a while. Had no idea Van Scriver was involved but he's never been huge on my comics radar anyway, so he can go to Hell.

At least Bill Seinkiewicz is on the right side.

Kieron Gillen's been teasing his new comic on his tumblr for a while now, and today the announced finally dropped. It's called DIE.

Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans making a comic where the pitch is "what if Jumanji was D&D" sounds pretty goddamn great. Not to mention Clayton Cowles on letters. So pumped.

I never really thought about it much before, but Jumanji was one of the first entries in the Isekai genre, huh

People being summoned to other, more mystical/technologically advanced/etc worlds is a trope almost as old as storytelling. That it gets called 'isekai' now is just because it's the current popular genre for junk Japanese pop culture at the moment, and Western fans imported the term for everything with a similar premise.

Little known fact: through a complicated time-loop scenario, Jumanji was actually the inspiration for countless myths and legends.

I want to believe that this applies to the RPG-inspired sequel.

Sure, but none of us were alive when A Yankee in King Arthur's Court was first published, and I'd stake a similar claim on the Narnia series

(but for me more seriously what I think of as mainstream isekai isn't just "dang, we're trapped in a high fantasy world" but "dang, we're trapped in a simulation or game based on a high fantasy world" or whatever. Hence I see Jumanji as the progenitor of, say, Sword Art Online)

Ah, the Russkies then (as they are the forefathers of LitRPG and gamelit).

Folks, you're all missing the point: Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans are making a fantasy comic together.

Marvel cancelled Chelsea Cain and Aud Koch's 6 issue Vision series before the first issue came out. There were already 4 issues in the can. It was going a major debut work for Aud Koch.

Chelsea Cain not happy.

That's a shame. I would have liked to read this series (I still need to read Tom King's Vision series). I like that Kurt Busiek is on her side. He was the author who made me reconsider what comics and superhero comics could be in my early teens.
