My Switch Dock has returned from the misty lands of Vancouver, and is waiting for me at home to make use of the consoles titular feature once again!

Our long national nightmare is over!

I'm almost a year late, but I finally picked one of these up! I got a grey one, along with Zelda. Now I have to wait until after work to actually set it up & play.

Any tips for a new owner?

Be a little careful putting it into and taking it out of the dock or you might scratch the screen. And have fun!

Treat the power adaptor carefully; it's actually pretty sophisticated, which means it's more susceptible to damage than, eg, the DS adaptors.

Prepare yourself, mentally, for a strong desire to see every video game ported to the Switch.

Alternately: get a tempered glass screen protector and don't look back!

Oh yeah, this was a big deal early on. Have any of you scratched your screens?

Thanks! It's USB C, right?

Hah! There are a handful of games that I was going to pick up on PS4, but I kept hearing this so I held off.

I never have, and I don't feel like I've been particularly careful. I honestly don't feel like it's really a concern unless you've got children using it. Just treat it like an adult would treat a piece of consumer electronics.

You can charge the console itself through USB C, but TV mode requires an official Nintendo adaptor. I suspect because the current involved tends to make adaptors or cables not made by Apple, Google, or AUKEY catch fire. Or possibly just hardware lock-in. You can never really tell with Nintendo.

If your the only one that will be using the Switch in the near term you can have it use your profile for default by going to System Settings -> Users -> Skip Selection Screen and set it to On. Then it will no longer ask which profile to use when launching a game, saving you a bit of time.

Simiarly, if you ever do want to restart a game that doesn't have manual save management (like Zelda) without wiping out your previous saves, you can create a new profile and start the game with that (disabling the above option so you can choose which profile to play with).

Basically saves are per profile now rather than system wide.

Register with My Nintendo and associated it with your Nintendo account so you get Gold Coins for digital purchases. You can also register physical cartridge games via the options menu when you click + with the game in the system and selected in the menu. You get less Coins for physical compared to digital, but it's still nice that they facilitate it all... Then again, there are no Switch rewards on My Nintendo as of yet, it's just listed as 'Coming Soon' as has been the case for almost a year now.

I think a very limited number of docks have rough edges that scratch screens. I don't know anyone who has had issues but reports are out there. You can also get decorative "socks" for the dock from places like Etsy that are nice.

Everything I'd read indicated that it was a tolerance or packaging problem in early runs; current Switches are unlikely to be affected.
