Default Go to Pal's Sudden Service

Pal's Sudden Service, which serves the Big Pal Burger, is owned by a man known as Pal Barger. It is the greatest fast food chain I have ever eaten at.

The restaurants are all a distinctive (some might say garish, but I disagree) baby-powder blue slashed with bright yellow and topped with fast food statues. It is a tightly controlled regional chain which has shown no interest expanding beyond its current footprint, which allows individual locations to be observed and controlled by management, keeping quality high and consistent.

Once, when I was working at the largest newspaper in the Pal's region, a call came into the editor. After hanging up, he stepped out of his office and called for everyone's attention. He then proceeded to utter one of the greatest sentences I have ever heard in my life:

"Pal Barger has been attacked by pirates."

Sure enough, the titular Pal had been on a cruise in the Indian Ocean and, no kidding, his cruise ship had been attacked by pirates. The ship's defense force fought them and ran them off before they could board, but what drama!

Pal's Sudden Service

The Good:
  • Delicious
  • Hilarious buildings
  • Reasonably priced
  • Secret Menu

The Bad:
  • You probably don't live anywhere close to one
  • Hell, I don't even live anywhere close to one anymore

When I read the thread title, my immediate thought was “Oh no, one of Thornghosts friends suddenly died... and he’s live-tweeting the funeral.”

So I am relieved and less confused to learn it’s actually a thread that’s a ringing endorsement for a burger restaurant.

Looks pretty cool! I'll be sure to keep an eye out the next time I'm in Tennessee.

Ah yes I believe that is the site of the original Pal's there. A architectural oddity in the Pantheon of Pals as it has a walk-up counter inside since most are drive through only. There are a couple of other variations on the theme, including a mall and strip mall location.

As legend has it, Pal Barger met Ray Kroc at a restaurant convention in the 1950s and Kroc showed him how he set up his first McDonalds. Pal went back home thinking "I can do that but better," and he did.

I like how abrupt and alarming "Sudden Service" sounds. Like somebody's going to leap out from behind a pillar and jump-scare you with your burger.

"SUDDEN SERVICE!!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"

Yeah, I knew someone had a location tag that would put them squarely in the right region, just couldn't remember who.

Regarding the burgers, when I first tried Pal's in college I found the sauce burger to be wretched. I loved everything else, just not that one particular burger. I just assumed it was some old timey item they kept on the menu for nostalgic purposes rather than it being anything people wanted.

For some reason, I ordered it a few more times and it really grew on me. When I moved away, it was that damned sauce burger that I first started craving. Not the Big Pal, not the frenchie fries, but the humble sauce burger. So weird.

It looks like a building that should exist in a Tony Hawk game. Grind the hot dog for 5 seconds to order en up a secret area.

This, but with a guy who spends his time getting attacked by pirates and whose restaurant looks like Pee-Wee's Playhouse decided to open a drive-through window.
