Default Let's play Karuba

What is a karuba

Karuba is a tile-laying game for two to four players in which you compete to guide your adventurers to their temples more quickly than your opponents. You score points for arriving at the temples and for picking up treasure along the way. The game ends as soon as one player has moved all four adventurers to their temples or when the stock of tiles is exhausted, and the player with the most points wins.

How do I play such a game

For the sake of playing the game online, there are going to be some slight rule differences. I am going to explain how the game will be played online, because that will be way easier than explaining how it's played on a board and then explaining how this implementation differs.

Karuba is played on a 6x5 grid. At the start of the game, each player will choose the location for one adventurer/temple pair. These are placed to the side of the board -- adventurers can be placed along the left or bottom edge, and temples can be placed along the top or right edge. An adventurer must be at least three tiles away from his temple. All adventurer/temple placements affect all players; in other words, everyone will have the same starting setup.

After that, I will draw from the 36 tiles in a random order. Everyone gets the same tile order; for example, if I draw tile 30, everyone will play tile 30.

To play a tile: There are two things you can do with a tile: you can place it on the board, or you can discard it to move an adventurer.

Placing a tile: Choose a location for the tile on the board. You cannot rotate the tile. If the tile shows a diamond or gold, the appropriate treasure is also placed on the tile. The only restriction on tile placement is that you can't cover an existing tile. It is legal to place tiles in the middle of nowhere. It is legal to place tiles such that they block the paths of other tiles on the board. It is legal to place tiles such that they make it impossible for an adventurer to reach the temple. (You should usually not do that.)

Moving an adventurer: Discard the tile, then select one adventurer and move it up to a number of spaces equal to the exits on the tile. For example, tiles 1-4 each have two exits, and tile 7 has four exits. If the adventurer ends his movement on a treasure, remove the treasure from the board and score it (one point for a diamond, two for gold).

Because the adventurers and temples are initially off the edge of the map, it takes one point of movement to get onto the map in the first place, and it takes one point of movement to move from the map onto a temple. For each color of adventurer, the first player to reach the temple gets 5 points, and each successive player gets one point fewer.

In case of a tie, the player with the most tiles on the board is the winner.

Now I would like to play Karuba

Of course you would. This feeling is only natural. Indicate your sign-upedness by replying to this thread. First come, first served. Four players per game, but I or someone else might run a second game, so feel free to waitlist yourself.

If you think you would like to play, but you don't fully understand, please do not hesitate to sign up anyway. This is not a particularly long or complicated game, and you will catch on real fast and/or you will enjoy losing.

I will do the thing.

I have no idea how to play, but I will do the thing anyway.

Question: Does everyone have their own 6x5 grid?

Yes. If you are a cheating cheater, you can just watch what everyone else is playing and get a four-way tie.

We will not do that online. We will do hidden actions.

My willpower lasted ~1.5 hours.

I will lead these 4 plucky adventurers to die a grisly death in the jungle, surrounded by piles of useless riches.

Setup time

Pick a location for an adventurer/temple pair. The adventurer starts on the coast (left or bottom -- where the letters and numbers are on this map), and the temple is located deep in the jungle (top or right).

Restrictions: You can't place an adventurer where another adventurer already is (and I forgot to mention this in the rules summary, but adventurers cannot overlap during movement, either -- they are very courteous and will wait for each other to get out of the way). Same with temples. You also need at least three tiles between your adventurer and your temple.

There's no need to go in any order for this, so just call out a letter/number for your adventurer and temple.

As I understand the rules, this is not a legal placement?

ETA: As for me, adventurer on the left edge of 5A, temple on the top edge of 1F.

Yeah, adventurers and temples begin play entirely off the board.

Close enough

I am going to choose to interpret your starting orders like this. At the end of the day, the setup doesn't really matter -- you all have to deal with the same board.

And what a board it is! Your temples are all clustered in the top right. We'll have Fun with that.

Our wonderful host RANDOM.ORG has selected tile 21 to start us off. Please reply in-thread using spoilers. I really don't want to rifle through a hundred PMs.

This is a good time to familiarize yourself with the tile collection. This particular corner occurs twice in 36 tiles. The other version has a diamond. Remember that you may not rotate the tile, so you are only picking a position.

In future rounds, you will also have the option to discard the tile, but due to the tiebreaker, there's no benefit to discarding so unless you can move someone.

You can and should waitlist yourself. I might run another game, and if I don't, someone else might, too. Heck, there's no reason you couldn't run and play.

I'm using GIMP with separate layers for everything, so maintaining the maps shouldn't be hard, and I can share those assets with anyone who wants to run the game. I am a dummy when it comes to image manipulation, so if I can run this, anyone can.

D5

Just so I am clear. We're trying to get all of the adventurers to their respective temples on our own boards.

There's not really any interaction with the other players except that they picked starting locations, right?

No direct interaction, correct. But you're racing, and whoever gets blue to the blue temple first gets more points than the other players, and the game ends as soon as any player gets all adventurers out, so it pays to keep an eye on other players' board state.

There's no reason that we can't read other players' spoilers after we've posted our own move, is there?

Turn 1

aturtledoesbite and Falselogic

JBear

"Hey, how would you have played this?" you ask. Well, D5 is the obvious placement. You're rarely happy to see a corner tile at the start of the game, but this one is at least usable. A2 and F2 are the only other good choices here, and there's a decent argument to be made for any of those, but there's not a spot where I'd be excited to place this tile. Ultimately, I'd probably put it at D5 just to give one of my adventurers somewhere to move.

Next up

When placing tiles, one consideration is where the gems will show up. You usually want to put gems where you won't have to waste movement to get them, meaning this boring, gemless tile is ideally placed right next to an adventurer or temple.

(Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to rush you, but rather questioning why we were moving onto turn 2 without you. I'm certainly going to be away from this thread for longer periods than you were just now over the weekend.)
