I was reading about RPG design and I came across something called the Czege Principle: "creating your own adversity and its resolution is boring." That basically sums up why The Stolen Century was dull as hell. The players didn't have any concrete problems to run up against, and it was way less interesting than anything else in the show.

Im nearing the end of my backwards trawl and, for one thing, its jarring to go from a modern episode to one from aught-twelve.

And second, the origin of their hatred of Jugglers and their love of Fushigi Balls stems from the same bit. And immediately predates their discovery of the phrase Am I good?

I've officially started listening to the podcast. I ended up picking the halfway point for now, so I started at 190 and am working my way slowly forward. I've been listening to highlight clips on youtube so I don't feel like I'm missing a lot of really good stuff from early on, but hey. One of these days I may double back and do the rest, who knows.

I think my favorite goof to date is "Pepum's Nasty Gum"

Also I just now found out there was a game called 100ft Robot Golf and the brothers recorded the announcer tracks (including in-game art depictions of them). WHAT

Here!

I think it's pretty early. I encountered it near the end of episode 200, which was a clip show featuring eps 31-45. Youtube says it was episode 39.

For me nothing will be funnier than Griffin pretending to be a sad old man in order to rob a bank (from the episode also featuring the very good and titular "Coyotes Ate Our Dad").

I just finished relistening to that episode, and both bits still had me laughing so hard my face wound up hurting.

Coyotes was the episode where the show finally clicked for me so it holds a special place in my heart.

Lin-Manuel Miranda played a version of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm last night. I was thinking about how funny it is that someone famous enough to play himself on that show was buddies with the McElroys. Then he dropped a Monster Factory reference in a conversation ("toe to tip") and it was even better.

Cripes, I just listened to MBMBAM #133 and this bit broke me:

"Tim Curry couldn't entice a child into an ice cream truck driven by a Pokemon."

Up until the most recent episode, I didnt realize how much Jimmy Buffet sounds like their dad. Except much more relaxed.

This informs a lot about the brothers.

I cannot get on board with "Tim Curry is not charming" as the premise of a joke.

Tim Curry could unquestionably get a child into an ice cream truck driven by a pokemon.

I don't want to meet the person who can watch Hunt for Red October and not want to give Tim Curry's character a giant hug. That dude can charm.

Yeah, I also prefer them in smaller doses. I listen to about every second episode that comes out and typically really enjoy what I hear, but I can tell there will be diminishing returns past that. I highly doubt I'll ever dive into their backlog, since that would take me years to clear and I'd get totally sick of them long before that.

That said, if I ever manage to get caught up on Friends at the Table, I might start listening to the Adventure Zone. I could see enjoying their work in a different context and I've heard lots of good things about it.

Randomly listening to old episodes and I chose John Tuturro Robot Watersports, and I reached the point where the brothers argue about Transformers canon and... man... never before or since have I wished so badly to be on the Skype call with them.

Conversely, I am completely on board with this, fourth TAZ arc. Which, apart from everything else, is a supernatural detective story set in a monstered-up Wild West setting. Travis might as well have called this one The Octo Show; For Octo

That was a ghost-joke. I am a ghost, you see.

I'm only about halfway through the new episode, but I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I was a bit worried that Griffin's character would be boring and that Clint would do a bad job playing a woman, but it seems like they're starting off on a good foot. Travis is doing a great job running things. Justin's ghost character might be the best one any of them has done. If things continue this way I'd be a lot happier with them following up with this story than the Monster of the Week one.

I was worried in the setup when Travis warned that his setting was less conducive to goofing around than the previous arcs.

And it seems the rest of the McElboys took that as a challenge.

I started listening to the MBMBAM podcast proper at 190, and I'm only one or two episodes away from 300. I think I'll hit that then take a break for another podcast - I think I'll catch up on the backlog of Radiolab I haven't listened to for the past year or two - before coming back.

My original plan was to finish MBMBAM before going to the Adventure Zone too; I guess I'll see how I feel after finishing Radiolab.

I'm sort of itching for them to go back to a D&D/traditional fantasy based thing, but that's just because it's my universe of choice, and I liked a lot of what Griffin was doing the first time around (without making it the Griffin's Story with everyone else happening to be in it). That having been said, I would totally be for them following up on Dust. Amnesty struck me the wrong way because it's like literally the same set up from last time, with the "secret" society with a logo and errethang. I'd rather a different structure. But in general, I've been enjoying the mini-arcs with the caveat that there's a lot of time spent setting up characters that I end up not caring about (especially the first mini-arc about the superheroes, which is the only one that I feel falls superbly flat... and also is about a secret society with a special logo.). Can't wait for Season 2 just because I want to enjoy a longer more intricate story and characters!

I like the monster of the week system and want to see more of it. I'm just hoping that if they do that it will be with a clean start and not set in Amnesty with the secret world part. I guess more Supernatural than not.

I super don't want them to go back to D&D, and I'd be sad if they ended up doing another high fantasy story like Balance.

DND just isn't a system that's suited to the kind of fuckery they like to engage in, and it's also not super great for podcasts. And I really enjoyed Balance and I know it isn't actually super high fantasy, but it's trodden ground for the moment.

However, I agree that out of all of them so far Dust feels like it has the most legs, and has built in plot hooks for when the PCs go corrupt which could be very fun. And Travis is a great storyteller/gm. What I'm wondering is if it's the bloody cards or the guy with the magnifying glass on the podcast art, and who's going to get a second turn of each of the segments is a mini arc.

It's true that the high fantasy setting is overdone, so I can't fault you for thinking that. All the same, I personally haven't really engaged in a lot of listening and watching of it, just because this is the style of podcast that I enjoy! But I wouldn't be heartbroken in the (likely) case they stray away from D&D, and now having listened to the end of Dust, I really love the characters they've explored in this mini-arc and would like for Travis to continue doing his DMing. Really great arc, wonder what you guys think about it. Errol is a cool way of doing a flawed character, and although the ghost shtick is getting a little old, I think in general it could lead to some great storytelling.

Looks like they're doing Amnesty after all.

I was sure they were going to do Dust, it's a much better set up. I have to be honest, I'm not looking forward to hearing Griffin's style of DMing for another 50 hours. I might sit this one out.

If it's more of the same just in a different setting, I'll be disappointed. But I'll put some trust in Griffin and see where this is going. But certainly Rust was my favorite mini-arc and it's a shame they didn't go with that.

That being said, I really like the Amnesty characters and the setting/ruleset works well for a podcast. I just hesitate since the story had a lot of similar beats and I would hate for this to stray in the same direction of Balance, which was a lot of fun but needs to be its own thing.
