Watched the Dhalfir Harris/DADA 5000 documentary Dawg Fight. It details the lives of South Florida backyard fighters, most of whom toil and suffer in obscurity before dying horribly. It's the determination of the men themselves that keep this from turning into misery porn - they do this because they understand that they matter, and the ring is the only place where other people treat them like they do.

Of note is an explanation of the beef surrounding Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and Harris: Harris worked security for Slice and wanted to use the gig as a springboard into fighting. Apparently Bangbus or whoever shot a couple videos of Harris fighting tomato cans, but shelved them when decided profiting from illegal street fights was not actually the smartest brand pivot in porn history. Harris blamed Slice for some reason, and beef resulted.

Harris' strengths are as a pitchman and promoter, and for all his physical gifts he lacks the gluttony for punishment that propels novice fighters through their ham-and-egg days. The producers edit around his pre-fight training and weight issues, but you still get grim context for why Harris showed up to fight on Bellator with heart and kidney failure.

I googled around as best I could and found that Harris is now out of the hospital and getting around fairly well for a man without functioning kidneys.

53-year-old former professional wrestler and politician Shinobu Kandori confirmed for slaughter by the hands of Gabi Garcia at RIZINís next freak show on December 29. May God have mercy on us all.

Kandori had a reputation as a shooter back in the day (resulting in a really bizarre quasi-MMA match with Yumiko Hotta in AJPW or LLPW or somethin, I forget exactly). Said rep was convincingly exploded by Svetlana Gundarenko more than 20 years ago, however, when she defeated Kandori in the finals of the LLPW L-1 Vale Tudo Challenge by basically sitting on her until she was exhausted and forcing a submission via neck crank. Again, that was in 1995. This will be as bad as Garcia/Hotta or worse.

GettinMelt wanted to know about the Koji Kitao connection: It's on Kandori's wiki page, as is the claim that Gundarenko-Kandori II was worked. You can also watch at least one of the fights on dailymotion last I checked.

And may I say that watching presumably-worked freakshow JMMA on grainy af dailymotion is the purest distillation of the sport.

I don't think anyone here is too into sports betting, but I feel like this is so crazy I have to mention it.

Jose Aldo is the biggest underdog on the main card of UFC 218. He's currently sitting at +260 against Max Holloway. For reference, these are the exact odds on Holly Holm v. Cyborg. Think about that for a second. They're estimating his chances of victory at ~28% (It's even less, since those odds include the juice). Max Holloway is a killer, but god damn.

To be fair, the line is based on how the betting is currently going, so this more means that everyone is betting on Holloway. They need to have more people bet on Aldo, so they move the line to entice bettors. I expect the line will shrink the closer we get to the event.

Nevermind I missed you mentioning the juice, my other guess is the first fight really cemented the thoughts on the Holloway/Aldo matchup

You're right on that one, but I think public perception's shifted way too much in the other direction. Betting odds are heavily influenced by the fighters' last performances, but I feel like the gap usually isn't this big.

Aldo may have been brutally finished in their last fight, but on a rewatch, you can see Aldo has his moments - it's far from a one sided destruction. With some readjustments, he could've won that fight. What's interesting about the first fight with Holloway is that Aldo's the champion, but Max beats him by forcing him into deep waters and then smothering him. However, Aldo doesn't have to fight at the pace he did in the first fight.

If you,'ve seen the fights that established his legacy, he made his reputation as a cautious fighter who focused on energy conservation. You could see how quickly he started tiring in the Holloway fight by the 3rd round when he fought less conservatively. He had a clear speed advantage, but he couldn't sustain volume the way Holloway did. This is inevitable with fighters who have more short twitch muscle fibers - think of Mcgregor v. Diaz and any of Yoel Romero's fights. If he doesn't throw down like he did in the first fight, he's already increased his chances of winning.

Also, blah blah blah incorporate leg kicks blah blah blah. You see a lot of commentary about the lack of leg kicks in the first fight and how Aldo stopped throwing them because he got countered the one time he threw a kick. I think the kicks are there, he's probably going to throw some in the rematch.

One more thing I recall is Aldo's coach mentioning takedowns as part of the game plan against Holloway. Those three factors can make this a completely different fight from the first. From my perspective, this is a pick 'em fight. The fact that the betting public is this high on Holloway is giving me shades of Garbrandt-Dillashaw*, but it also gives me an opportunity to take a good value bet on Aldo.

Overeem being a huge dog also surprised me. He' s almost as high as Aldo, which sounds really batshit insane when you hear his opponent only has four years total experience in mma. It's obviously because Overeem has a reputation of being chinny and Ngannou's known for blastimg heavyweights with his lightning quick hands. I'd wager another factor in the betting line is Ngannou wrecking Arlovski in his last fight and Overeem scraping by on a split against Werdum. It looks even worse because he was dropped and almost finished in the third. On paper though, Overeem is a better striker, grappler, and more experienced than Ngannou. I'm surprised he's not the favorite, especially since he's improved so much at not getting punched in the face in recent history.

Having said all this, Aldo and Overeem will be summarily destroyed and I'm going to feel like a total dipshit.

*Not that Garbrandt isn't a great fighter, but he was a 2:1 favorite against Dillashaw, I'm guessing because someone did the MMAth that Garbrandt>>Cruz>>Dillashaw. Dillashaw's a fantastic fighter and they're both capable of winning at all times. The outcome of this fight was basically a coin flip.

I agree with you on all points. Regarding the kicks, I remember reading an article that Aldo threw so few because he had a leg injury that they were worried about aggravating. Who knows if that is true or embellishment from the camp, but it is something to consider for the rematch.

The first Holloway-Aldo fight reminded me a bit of Aldo's bout with Mark Hominick in the way he faded in the championship rounds. Granted in the Hominick one he dominated much more heavily until the 4th and 5th, but you saw him fade hard especially near the end of that 5th round when Hominick was in full mount.

The end played out pretty similar to the first fight. Aldo threw some more kicks, but he was still pretty willing to engage. He did do a better job of staying on the outside of Max's volume, but in the third round for whatever reason just bit down on his mouthpiece and started brawling with Max. Doesn't bode well to scrap with a Hawaiian.

Biederman put it well when he said Aldo didn't seem to have a plan out there. "Stand and trade" is not a plan.

Which is sort of along the lines of "never get involved in a land war in Asia" or "never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
