Default Voltron: Legendary Defender

I can't find the appropriate misleadingly-titled catch-all megathread where we're supposed to talk about this Netflix-exclusive cartoon show amid a sea of whatever else that's probably going on in such a thread, so fuck the rules, this is the Voltron thread now.

I didn't expect to like this show, but I do, because I think it's like what I'd come up with if somebody asked me to reinvent Voltron. It's smarter than it sounds, it knows when to be fun, and it quickly becomes a full-on space adventure. Space adventures! My favorite!

My favorite character so far is Pidge, because even though "Pidge" is a weird name, green is the best color and Pidge has all the character qualities that appeal to me. As well as the best arc.
Coran definitely has a lock on Funniest Character, though.

Season 2 is reportedly on its way and I'm looking forward to it.

TOUCHES THE THREAD

All prior talk about it was just in the general Animation thread, yeah.

Pidge is my favorite too.

I'm not old enough to have watched OG Voltron, but this show has such a strong vibe of the show you thought you were watching when you watched that dumb toy commercial anime anyways and I love it. Completely unapologetic about how silly the lions are and so much fun for it.

To echo myself in the other thread; Legendary Defender is the show I thought I was watching when I was six years old.

And that is the highest compliment I can grant to any remake.

Even as a mecha show, Legendary Defender is fascinating and outstanding. It does a great job of making sure that the giant robot lions matter and are important, while at the same time not letting them dominate screen time. We get plenty of neat scenes with the lions, but the solution to every problem isn't "And I'll form the head!" It's masterful.

I've only watched the first episode so far, and it's like... anime like I remember anime to be? Goofy fun adventure times without all the suffocating, overwhelming skeeviness? If it keeps that up I'll probably enjoy it.

Oh and speaking of adventure time it took me waaaaaaay to long to realize that what'shisface was voiced by Finn.

I can confirm that it never gets skeevy. I have very low tolerance for that sort of thing.

Actual real-life timeline of my reactions:

There's a new Voltron?! WHAT

It's 2D animated?! WHAT

It's by Netflix?! WHAT

It's... actually decent?! WHAT

It's actually really good?! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

I signed up for my free month of Netflix just to watch this, and I liked it enough that if/when we get a second season I might actually (*gasp*) pay for a month of Netflix to watch more!

I think it's been announced for December or so? Late this year, in any case.

I love that Coran, stupid, boring Coran, was recast as Murray, from Flight of the Conchords. And is played by Murray, from Flight of the Conchords.

I'm just waiting for him to do a roll-call for people who are obviously present.

It is really a good show, isn't it. I never watched the original, but I feel no desire to do so now.

Things start maybe a little too slow and the things in the last episode (or thereabouts) happen maybe a bit too fast, but really Voltron's solid quality pretty much all the way.

Loved it. A very the boys show. I also really like Pidge and I usually don't like soft baby characters all that much. Glad that they were willing to make Pidge be the boys with the boys.

Action was also A+. I was really happy to see some Korra quality fisticuffs. These cats really do make some of the best animated fight scenes.

One weird thing was that Lance never got a Big Boy Bang moment. Everyone else in the last episode or thereabouts had at least a single Big Boy Bang moment but Lance was just kinda mediocre. He'll probably get something next season and the beginning of the show was mostly focused on him so I figure that counts as his Big Boy Banger (Unfortunately, it's been a few months since I watched this show so I can't think of all the specifics anymore. But when I did watch I remember waiting for Lance's Big Boy Bang and being kinda disappointed when it didn't happen).

Tee-hee.

The only real problem I had with the show was destroying the King Alfor hologram. That thing was such a non-entity up until that point that a whole episode about needing to shut it down didn't really have the emotional impact they were shooting for. Wasting a whole episode of a PRETTY SHORT season on it kind of felt wasteful.

Hey, remember when I said that? ... Okay, no one does. But!

Guess who discovered a few kitties at Toys R Us!?

A few notes:
  • All of the lions were available except Black Lion. This is wrong, and should be a crime.
  • Additionally, there are more, smaller Voltron toys, but who cares.
  • Each of the lions are mostly hard plastic, but they have kinda soft plastic paws, presumably because most children are afraid of Voltron scratches.
  • Each lion comes with a unique blaster weapon thingy. This is cool! Most of the blasters peg in, but Blue Lion has a wrap around blaster that falls off constantly.
  • Yellow Lion shoots pizza.
  • Green Lion and Red Lion come with the two parts of Blazing Sword. Did... did someone think kids would need extra incentive to build a Voltron with two arms?
  • Green Lion also comes with a shield, and you can either equip the blaster OR the shield, but not both at once. This is the only lion that comes with extra gear that won't go anywhere.
  • Each of the lions come with a little "pilot" that is about the size of a dime, and isn't even painted, just kind of vaguely pilot shaped. I don't know why they bothered.
  • More information forthcoming when Black Lion decides to stop by.
  • ROB is included for scale, and because he hisses every time I try to move him.

There's a bunch of product out right now. Here's the link to the Black Lion on BBTS (I think this is the same series) if you can't find him locally.

My willpower is weak and I watched the entire season in one go.

It was a freakin' awesome season that leaves me drooling for season 3 is all I'm saying.

First episode was kind of laying all its cards on the table re: Keith replacing Shiro, once he goes to the Space Hospital.

It also had Pidge immediately start going full Castaway.

I've only watched eps 1-7 but holy cow they were all great. 7 had me rolling from beginning to end, especially the final gag.

Wonder how long she was alone with her thoughts before that happened.
