IMMA BUY THE SHINY GOBLET.

ALSO, MY REPUTATION PRECEDES ME, SO THE NICE SHOPKEEPER IS GOING TO GIVE ME A DISCOUNT.

*AHEM*

"My name is JBear, and this is my favourite trinket shop in the kingdom."

(Also, bah, I should have waited to Periscope. I didn't think you had it in you, Mogri.)

Also, I'm next to act, so I guess I should go ahead and Debunk now too, while I'm at it? I'm gonna do that.

So... esteemed colleagues... this is a little embarrassing. Look, I promise that my hard drinking days are behind me. It's only serious academics for me from here out! I'll be going to AlAnon in the new year (Alchemists Anonymous, 'natch), I promise. But... well, none of that was true a few days ago, and I may have made another typo. Just a small one. Look, it's so easy to confuse mandrakes and ferns! They're both... plants. Look, I'm an alchemist, not a botanist. No one is going to remember these couple of hiccups when I'm famous. ANYWAY.

*AHEM*

Analyzing Human Reaction to Liquefied FernsMandrake Root: A Healing Balm with Side Effects of Paralysis and Insanity

(I am debunking my own theory on Ferns, on the basis that they in fact have a negative red aspect. Then I'm going to use my instant publish to slide that alchemical down-right and publish it as the properties of Mandrake Root instead. Seal PM incoming.)

Ferns are poisonous? Yeah that sounds about right.

This isn't really any major impediment to anyone who published on that theory, mind you. And JBear puts that alchemical on the mandrake root and gets 3 total reputation for it.

I knew you were a fraud all along!

You know who else is a fraud? Mogri. I have to wonder whether he's ever even seen a scorpion. Do you know what they keep in their tails? It isn't health juice, that's for damn sure.

Wait, now you're saying scorpions are ALSO poisonous?

That's a lot of poison and some pretty harsh reputation loss. You gonna go for the immediate publish, or let aturtledoesbite take their shot?

Sund, D. On the effects of scorpion extract. Proc. Natl. Acad. Alc., 178, 23, pp. 134-2801

Abstract

A number of ancient cultures (1,2,3) had a tradition of feeding dead scorpions to the dying as a last rite, holding that this would grant them wisdom in their final moments, and that the normally deleterious side effects of paralysis and toxicity would merely serve to ease the pain of passing. In modern times, this has come to be regarded as mere superstition (4), and recent scholarship (5,6) has even suggested that scorpion extract may have salubrious properties. Here, we present new evidence that this is in fact fallacious, and that the ancient viewpoints toward the scorpion may deserve reevaluation.

Yeah, yeah, got your fancy-schmancy "citations" and "peer reviews" or whatever. What crock.

dtsund, you're a sham, and so is your work on toads!

"Look, Turtle, maybe you should lay off the drinks..."

Wait, hear me out! For you see, just as I am absolutely the wisest person in this room, toads are wise as well!

(EDIT: To save time, not publishing immediately)

Yep, the toad has properties of wisdom.

And another one bites the dust.

JBear, looks like you have another debunk queued up. What'll it be?

Obviously our esteemed colleague Mr. Sund, D has never been attacked by an angry crow! If he was on the ground doing real research with the rest of us instead of writing ridiculous 2700 page papers, he'd know that they secret a paralyzing agent from their talons!

They sure do.

aturtledoesbite, your publication. Try to keep it at least partly accurate, I don't think people could take another turn of mass debunks.

Since that's the last action of the round, this theory board also takes reputation changes from the last conference and the Top Alchemist Award into account. Long story short: I'm pretty sure JBear is winning this game.

Our final adventurer is the Shady Character, who is once again looking for potions of insanity, poison, and paralysis.

We also get our tier 3 artifacts in, listed here:
  • Altar of Gold: Costs 1 gold. Immediately pay 1 to 8 gold to gain that many points of reputation.
  • Crystal Cabinet: Costs 5 gold, awards 2 victory points per artifact you own (including itself).
  • Magic Mirror: Costs 4 gold, awards 1 victory point for every 5 reputation points you have at the end of the final round.

And one last look at the player board before it changes fairly drastically. How drastically, you ask?

For the final round, the Test on Students and Drink Potion spaces are not available (except via the Custodian). Instead, they have been replaced with Exhibit Potion. Fundamentally it works the same, but since the old value of info no longer matters since you'll have no way to capitalize on it, instead you can get reputation boosts here!

Before mixing your potion, you'll tell the audience what kind of potion you're gonna make. If you're right AND you're the first person to exhibit that kind of potion, you gain 1 reputation! (Neutral potions are not exciting enough for an audience.) If you screw up, you lose 1 reputation, but either way you still learn what you mixed.

Furthermore, if you mix both potion types of a single color during the exhibition, you have displayed mastery of that color, and get a cool 2 reputation for your trouble! Unlike the above boosts, you can score this regardless of what other players pulled it off.

Here's the board for the last turn. It's the last turn, did I mention this? Have fun!

And as I recall, I post my turn order first. I'll take the empty slot.

By my math, I should still have 1 gold left? I began turn 5 with 3 Gold, then transmuted with my Sage for +2, giving me 5. Then I purchased a 4-cost artifact with the assistance of a shopkeeper, costing me 3 and leaving me with 2. Finally, I published at a cost of 1, leaving me with 1.

Yeah, you're right. Updated my end accordingly. I dunno if you noticed, but there's a lot to track for even a single person in this game!
